Sanders and the Left After Super Tuesday:
Why there is still hope and why the Left should rejoice and push forward
Brad A. Bauerly and Ingar Solty
While some have become skeptical, there are those -- from The Nation via Politico and Tom Cahill (U.S. Uncut) to Robert Reich -- who are now saying that this is not the end of the line for Bernie Sanders U.S. presidential bid.
And it is indeed true that we should remind ourselves that ever since the 1980s the Democratic party leadership has scheduled the primary season in ways that voters in more conservative states would go to the polls first in order to prevent leftist grassroots candidates from challenging the neoliberal party establishment. Keeping that in...

Age of Austerity:
Capital, the Financial Crisis and the State in Canada
Geoffrey McCormack and Thom Workman interviewed by Robin Chang
The financial and economic crisis of 2008 has left a continuing legacy on social welfare, showing up in slow economic growth, unemployment and underemployment, and increasing social conflict. In the debate over the future of the world economy, many foresee a long depression, and the intensification of neoliberal austerity. Geoffrey McCormack and Thom Workman's new book is concerned with Canada's unique economic and social history over the period of neoliberalism, including the financial and economic crisis of 2008. In The Servant State: Overseeing Capital Accumulation in Canada (Fernwood 2015), McCormack and Workman present a classical Marxist perspective, and intervene into a range of...

Secret tax scheme: tip of the iceberg

KPMG, a massive multinational accounting firm, organized a “sham” tax scheme to help millionaires dodge taxes - and the Canada Revenue Agency let them off the hook.
Tell our government to close tax loopholes and stop tax dodging in the upcoming budget
Stop tax dodgersLast week, a CBC investigation uncovered a secret tax scheme that could be just the tip of the iceberg. KPMG, a massive multinational accounting firm, organized a “sham” tax scheme to help millionaires dodge taxes with offshore accounts.1
It gets worse. Last May, bosses at the Canada Revenue Agency made a secret backroom deal to let them off the hook with no consequences. The CRA drags normal people through the courts, but these super wealthy clients got amnesty – even after several CRA staff raised the alarm about a secret deal they knew to be wrong.2
Tax evasion is huge problem in Canada. One study showed that tax evasion costs us up to $81 billion - that’s half our total healthcare spending. But we can stop it.3
Our new government is set to table its first budget on March 22, and we have a chance to turn public outrage about this secret tax deal into lasting changes to make sure the super wealthy pay their fair share. Click here to call on our new government to end KPMG’s “sham” tax deal, and close tax loopholes in the budget.
This isn’t about messing up a tax return. KPMG helped clients dodge $130 million worth of taxes through offshore accounts on the Isle of Man, and they took a 15% cut.

Hi, we’re Zach and Chris, and we’re Global Citizens. In making our film Salam Neighbor, we spent a month living in Za'atari Camp in Jordan next to 85,000 Syrian refugees. We were there to capture the stories and reality of our new neighbours who lost family, homes, security and schooling when conflict began in Syria 5 years ago.
On the 5th Anniversary of the Syrian conflict, sign the petition calling on world leaders to prioritize education in emergencies funding for children.

New video - Will Trudeau make this very bad drug deal?

Dear PAOV,
I’m writing you today to share a new video we’ve made. First though, I’d like to share a story which explains why I think this video is so important.
Nine years ago I met a woman who forever changed the way I thought about health.
I was working with a medical program that supported the needs of HIV positive people in rural Ghana. One morning I drove deep into the countryside with a local healthcare worker until we arrived at a small bright blue church surrounded by tall grass. This is where I met a twenty-year-old woman named Regina. She was alone in the chapel, sitting in silence. She had a bright smile and it widened when I told her there was a city in Canada named after her.

Portugal’s Political Impasse
Charles-André Udry
The election of conservative candidate Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa as Portugal's new president on January 24 (with 51.99 per cent of the vote and a 48.84 per cent voter turnout) adds a new element to the existing ‘tripolar’ situation, which may be analyzed as follows.
First, we have a Socialist Party (SP) government, serving alongside the newly elected president, presided over by the party's general secretary (Prime Minister) Antonio Costa. Costa's government is based on conditional parliamentary support he received from the Left Bloc (Bloco de Esquerda, in Portuguese) and the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP).
However, the Left Bloc's conditions differ significantly from those of the PCP. The PCP is, in turn, very different from the Left Bloc;...
