The Case Against Bombing ISIS

Greg Shupak

When ISIS claimed responsibility for the horrendous attacks in Brussels last week, U.S. President Barack Obama was unequivocal: the U.S. and its allies, he said, "can and will defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world." More bombing, it hardly needed to be said, was on the way. For their part, the presidential candidates only disagree on the scale of military action needed to stamp out ISIS -- not on the appropriateness of yet more American warfare. The call for a muscular response, however, overlooks the casualties the U.S. has already inflicted.

To date, U.S.-led coalition airstrikes in the war on ISIS have likely killed at least 1,044 civilians in Iraq...

Methodology for a New Politics:
Changing the 'Operating System' of the Left after the Greek experience of 2015

The Greek case leaves no doubt about Europe's present situation: democracy has been successfully limited and a new kind of despotism is fast emerging. In this lecture Karitzis outlines key aspects of the current sociopolitical environment and presents a diagnosis regarding the time lag of the Left. The main focus is with the modifications needed to the political practice of the Left based on the “SYRIZA experience”. This entails an upgrade its operational capacities to meet the requirements of present day antagonisms. Building popular power, restructuring political representation and reviving the notion of “transformation of the state” are all major themes addressed. Lessons from the Greek case may be...

American-Funded Child Soldiers

Open Society Foundations The law sounds pretty straightforward: the Child Soldiers Prevention Act prohibits the U.S. government from providing military aid to countries that put children in combat.

In reality, that “law” is more of a guideline—readily ignored when it proves inconvenient.

Looking the Basic Income Gift Horse in the Mouth

John Clarke

Both the Trudeau Liberals in Ottawa and the Wynne Government at Queen's Park in Toronto have been making noises of late on the subject of Basic Income. The last Ontario Budget, in fact, declared an intention to carry out a pilot project in a community still to be announced. While no clear details are yet available, it is very likely that we will soon be dealing with a practical initiative that we will have to respond to. We will have to consider how we view the possibility of the Liberals moving in the direction of a Basic Income system.

After decades of intensifying austerity and the erosion of systems of income support, with...

This is what we've been up to this year

On October 19th, an overwhelming majority of Canadians voted for change, and Stephen Harper was defeated. After 10 long years, it was truly a turning point, and thousands of us in the Leadnow community worked incredibly hard to help make this possible.1

Defeating Harper has brought us a new beginning. Now we have a rare chance - maybe once-in-a-generation - to make lasting changes on the major challenges of our time.

Authorities refuse to stop Canada Goose deception

The federal Competition Bureau just informed us that it won't act to stop jacket company Canada Goose from falsely claiming that using coyote fur is humane. Trapping and snaring coyotes for their fur is unavoidably cruel, which is why we demanded the Competition Bureau stop Canada Goose from trying to dupe consumers into buying fur. Our legal team...

Dear supporter ~

Our townhall meeting on February 24th was a full house, a strong showing of support for SCS in Victoria. The resounding message was that we need to move forward immediately to prevent overdose deaths, and to increase access to health services, counseling and treatment. There was also a lot of curiosity about what services should look like in Victoria.

forumSCS forumaudience

To that end, we're excited to announce that we are collaborating with Dr. Thomas Kerr and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS on a survey of service users in Victoria. Kerr, who played a key role in supporting the opening of Insite, is now supporting similar research in Thunder Bay and London, Ontario. Bruce Wallace, Assistant Professor at UVic and steering committee member of yes2scs, will be conducting the research in partnership with the yes2scs peer advisory committee and UVic's Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC).
