Emad Abu Shamsiya filmed an extrajudicial killing by the IDF. Now he's being threatened for speaking out. Sign our open letter, and stand with this brave whistleblower.

. TAKE ACTION . . .

Last week, Jews around the world (including many of us here at JVP) celebrated the festival of Purim with songs, and spiels, and costumes. But as Purim parties went on in Jewish-only neighborhoods of the occupied Palestinian city of Hebron, an extrajudicial killing took place just streets away.

Abed al-Fattah Yusri al-Sharif, a young man of just 21 years old, was the suspect in a stabbing. But he wasn’t arrested, and he’ll never be tried. He was shot, at point-blank range, while lying wounded on the ground. There were IDF medical teams right there, but they gave him no attention. Instead, while bleeding profusely, he was shot again.

Ontario Government Program Spending is far Lower than the Rest of Canada

Doug Allan

The Ontario government spent 1.6 per cent less of provincial Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to the other provinces in 2010-11. With sharp cutbacks in Ontario, that gap had increased to 2.1 per cent by 2014/15. On this basis, Ontario spent about $15-billion less on programs than the other provinces and territories. On a per capita basis, Ontario is the lowest spending (and lowest revenue) provincial government in Canada. Ontario spent $1,200 less per person in 2010/11 than the other provinces and territories and almost $2,000 less per person in 2014/15. Here the gap is even larger – Ontario spent about $27-billion less on a per capita basis than the other...

Get ready for PowerShift Alberta

PStwitter1.png

For the last few weeks, I've been residing in Treaty No. 6 Territory in Amiskwaci/Edmonton planning PowerShift Alberta. This is not my home, and I didn't know what to expect in organizing a youth climate justice gathering in the heart of oil country. We are now just less than two weeks out and I couldn't be more optimistic, and excited.

Share these PR MythBusters!

myth stability

As the Liberals get set to announce their all-party committee consultation process, proportional representation will soon be back in the news.

The new Liberal government has promised to “make every vote count” in 2019, but is undecided on proportional representation.

As the cross-Canada consultations begin, we can expect opponents to begin recycling the same tired myths against voter equality in an effort to mislead Canadians about electoral reform.

Austerity Gathers Pace in Volatile South Africa

Austerity Gathers Pace in Volatile South Africa

Patrick Bond

A wedge is being quickly driven through Pretoria's political elite, splitting even those who worked closely in the murky 1980s Durban spy scene during the fight against apartheid. Amongst the victims are vast numbers of poor people beginning to bear the brunt of the diverse shakeouts in the ongoing confrontation now underway between the country's two most powerful 21st century politicians: President Jacob Zuma and his predecessor Thabo Mbeki. That battle began in 2005, when Mbeki fired then-Deputy President Zuma following a corruption conviction against a long-time Zuma associate.

The revival of their duel comes at a very tense time in South Africa. Student, worker and community protests intensified last month after the December-January summer...

An Iranian Classic: For the Continuation of the Dictatorship, Long Live Elections!

An Iranian Classic:
For the Continuation of the Dictatorship, Long Live Elections!

Araz Bağban

Iran's parliamentary elections for the Islamic Consultative Assembly were held in parallel with the elections for the Assembly of Experts on 26 February. Iran is one of the main actors of the ongoing wars and conflicts in the Middle East and has just recently overcome its long-standing nuclear crisis with the Western powers. Naturally, with these elections the internal dynamics of the Islamic regime was again at the centre of attention. The elections were discussed and analyzed based on two lists of alliances; a list formed by hardliners or ultra-conservatives and another formed by the reformist-backed pro-Rouhani moderate conservatives which are generally labeled ‘the reformists’ by the international media in the...

Canada maintains development budget

r1 Canada maintains development budget.
View in browser

Hello PAOV,

A few weeks ago we asked Global Citizens all around Canada to send an email to the Canadian government to tell them to start making predictable increases to the aid budget starting with this year’s budget.

The budget was released on Tuesday and unfortunately funding to development ‎has not been increased. Funding has not decreased either, which is positive.

The Budget has committed to modestly increase short term funding to the International Assistance Envelope by $256 million over the next two years, which is to be applauded. However, the Government did not seize this opportunity to match its strong statements that “Canada is back” with concrete commitments for Canadian international engagement.

While...
