Brussels, 8 March 2016 (ITUC OnLine): A new study released today by the ITUC shows that investment into the care economy of 2% of GDP in just 7 countries would create over 21 million jobs and help countries overcome the twin challenges of ageing populations and economic stagnation. The report http://www.ituc-csi.org/CareJobs which analysed the employment growth potential in the care economy in Australia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the USA, also demonstrates how investing in care narrows the gender pay gap, reduces overall inequality and helps redress the exclusion of women from decent jobs. The G20 has set a target to increase women's participation in the workforce by 25% in the coming years. This can only be achieved when the care sector is properly funded.

Brussels, 11 March 2016 (ITUC OnLine): Five years after the Assad regime, with its brutal repression of peaceful civil dissent, triggered the carnage which has cost over 250,000 lives, the partial cease-fire in Syria holds the hope of an end to the litany of failures of international diplomacy, and the possibility that peace may prevail. Humanitarian aid is reaching many beleaguered communities, where the local population has been deprived of sufficient food, medical supplies and other essentials. A resumption of UN-brokered peace talks is also now possible and the UN must fulfil its peace and security responsibilities, with the utmost priority being to stop the bombing of civilians.

Brussels, 23 March 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The International Labour Organisation has given Qatar 12 months to reform its labour laws and ensure effective labour inspection, or face the prospect of an ILO Commission of Inquiry being launched next March. Government, employer and worker delegates to the ILO's Governing Body meeting in Geneva set the deadline yesterday, despite a major lobbying effort by the Qatar government. An ILO Commission of Inquiry is one of the most powerful elements in the UN body's mechanisms to help ensure compliance. In close to a century of history of the ILO, the procedure has been invoked only thirteen times: http://www.ilo.org/dyn/normlex/en/f?p=NORMLEXPUB:50011:0::NO::P50011_ARTICLE_NO:26 .

Brussels, 24 March 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has written to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, calling on him to open a dialogue with the country's trade unions as public outrage grows over changes to the education system. Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in two public rallies in recent weeks, and union leaders are warning of widespread disruption if the government continues to refuse talks. While teachers are effectively denied the right to take legal strike action, there is growing support for a one-hour strike expected to take place on March 30.
