Confronting Injustice, Choosing Social Activism

Umair Muhammad

Bold and imaginative activism is difficult to find precisely at a time when we need it most. However, it is not the case that activism in general is in short supply; one finds, in fact, that activist ideals and vocabulary have securely made their way into everyday life. However, this leaves society fundamentally unchanged when the messages communicated by activists are distorted and then used to reinforce the social realities that they were originally devised to change.

Perhaps the most blatant example of the co-optation of activist ideals can be seen in the supposed embrace of the concept of sustainability by the corporate world. Oil companies long ago discovered the public relations benefits of describing their operations...

After the Sands: Energy and Ecological Security for Canadians

The Paris climate accords were strong on aspirations to keep the world below 2C temperature rise but very weak on delivery. Despite Trudeau's claims that Canada is back, Ottawa has stuck with Stephen Harper's pathetic climate targets. To meet its commitments, each country must find its own unique road map. Canada doesn't have one. Gordon Laxer outlines a bold strategy to get with the global move to a low carbon society, run on conservation and renewable energy sources including wind, solar and low-impact hydro to ensure that all Canadians, including those on lower incomes, have access to a sufficient amount of energy as a human right.

3 things we learned from Toronto

Dear supporter ~

Toronto and Edmonton both made the news in recent weeks for their steps towards Supervised Injection Services. Toronto is the furthest along, with Toronto Public Health recommending collaboration with three local health services that are planning to add SIS to their existing services, and committing to reporting on consultations by July.

Toronto offers 3 important lessons how to move forward with SIS. Rather than getting bogged down in discussions and technical considerations such as exemption applications, Toronto has started from the actual services and funding for these services, then moved towards discussion, consultation, and exemption processes. Here's how they are doing it:

Your TPP messages on a 16-foot JUMBOTRON!

Major public consultations on the TPP are kicking off in Vancouver on April 18th, and everyone will be watching. This is a key moment to expose the dangers of the TPP, and show just how widespread opposition is.

We want to park a 16-foot JUMBOTRON outside the venue broadcasting your 'Reject TPP' messages, but we have to raise $5000 to make it happen.

Together we can stop the TPP, but we need to show powerful opposition at every opportunity - and this is a huge one.

Chip for a TPP JUMBOTRON!

Can you imagine how you’d feel if you heard that a foreign company was suing our government for billions of dollars for passing laws to protect our environment or your health?

As scary as it sounds, that’s exactly what’s proposed by the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) -- a dangerous trade deal negotiated in secret by Harper. It gets worse and worse: the TPP will cost thousands of good jobs, raise the cost of prescription drugs, and introduce banned hormones into our milk.

What Did Quebec Public-Sector Unions Achieve?

What Did Quebec Public-Sector Unions Achieve?

Ashley Smith

After a wave of protests and job actions that culminated in Quebec's largest general strike in decades last December, public-sector unions have agreed to a series of contracts with disappointing concessions that raise questions about where the struggle in Quebec will go next.

On December 9, more than 400,000 workers shut down government services to defend their wages, benefits and working conditions. Liberal Party Premier Philippe Couillard provoked the strike by demanding massive concessions. Unions formed a bargaining alliance, the Common Front, to negotiate with the government. The nurses in the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec (FIQ) and teachers in the Fédération autonome de l'enseignement (FAE) held separate talks.
