Brussels, 11 April 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has expressed its support for 2,500 Algerian teachers facing repression from the government over their demands to be transferred from temporary to permanent contracts. Teachers protested by going on hunger strike following a 240km walk, with one of them, Fullah Jalal, suffering a broken leg when she was beaten by security forces. The teachers have also been threatened with outright dismissal by the Algerian Education Minister.

The BRICS: An Anti-Capitalist Critique
The relative economic decline of the United States, Europe and Japan is often linked to the rise of an ‘emerging’ bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa demanding ‘a seat at the table’. Yet as many of the world’s leading left thinkers demonstrate in this important new book, the BRICS seem to be not so much overturning the tables of global capitalism, but as collaborating in holding them up.
The book's co-editors Patrick Bond from South Africa and Ana Garcia from Brazil are joined by the two Toronto authors of chapters in the book in discussing how to understand where the BRICS fit on the most crucial global issues ranging from world finance to climate change.

Brussels, 6 April 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has deplored the approval of a new Trade Union Law by the National Assembly of Cambodia this week. The law was pushed through despite repeated objections by trade unions, the International Labour Organization and several global garment brands. The law, backed by Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling party, would among other things impose new limits on the right to strike, facilitate government intervention in internal union affairs and permit third parties to seek the dissolution of trade unions - while at the same time imposing only miniscule penalties on employers for unfair labour practices. Trade unionists who peacefully protested at the time of the vote on the new law were bludgeoned by government thugs ( "> ), leaving several injured.

. TAKE ACTION . . .Dear PAOV,
This is a big deal.
Senator Patrick Leahy, along with 10 Congressional representatives, has written to the State Department, urging them to investigate “gross violations of human rights” by Israel and Egypt.
This letter happened because Rep. Hank Johnson organized it -- but it got 11 signatories, including, crucially, Senator Leahy himself -- because we helped fight for it.

"Courage is contagious." That's what Edward Snowden had to say on the Panama Papers leak that gave us a glimpse into the hidden world of offshore tax shelters -- that cost the world's public coffers an estimated $32 trillion globally -- and about $200 billion in Canada.
How the global 1% stash their cash remains elusive, and so far only one Canadian has been named, though 450 or so are known to at least the CBC. But what can we learn from the largest data deluge to date? Two things.
