For BDS, Against Apartheid, Free Palestine

Toward Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions at McGill

Dan MacFadden

Six years before the fall of the South African apartheid, an editorial by The Daily ("South Africa Love it and Leave it," September 12, 1985, Editorial, page 4) noted optimistically, "Now, even the most conservative authorities are recognizing that revolution is inevitable. Now, they are divesting not on principle, but out of self-interest." McGill would later, in November 18, 1985, join dozens of other North American universities in divesting its holdings from South Africa, also becoming the first Canadian university to do so -- something that played an important role in taking down legislated apartheid in the country.

Thirty years later, the end of Israeli apartheid appears distant...

Women Can’t Wait; Repeal the 8th
The Politics of Abortion and the Irish National Election

Carol-Anne Hudson

Abortion is one of the defining issues of the 2016 national Irish election, yet a vast majority of candidates have declined to give their views on the controversial subject. 331 of the 392 candidates have not declared a position, 33 candidates have stated support for keeping the 8th Amendment, and another 28 candidates have stated that they want to repeal the 8th. Labour, Sinn Féin, the Greens, Social Democrats, and a number of Left Independents have pledged to hold a referendum to remove the "right to life" 8th Amendment from the Constitution, which prevents the liberalization of the state's abortion laws.

Along with the U.K., U.S., Canada,...

A Moment of Catharsis

One year after Syriza's victory and six months after the coup

Mario Candeias

One year after the victory and six months after the coup, we shouldn't fool ourselves: This was a defeat, of the Greek government. But it's not only Syriza that has failed (for now). The whole left has failed in Greece -- and in the rest of Europe, indeed. Europe is no longer what it was. It's impossible to defend this project of European unification from the left without falling into pure illusions.

Ever since the last European Parliament elections, the minimal demand is: ‘No further transfer of powers from the national to this EU.’ This is certainly right, but then what?

Some hope that now...

Launching the Socialist Register 2016: The Politics of the Right

Launching the Socialist Register 2016:
The Politics of the Right

It is becoming increasingly clear that we are at one of those historical moments that compel socialists to undertake a serious calibration of the political forces amassing on the right. This stems partly from the electoral breakthrough far-right parties have made in Europe as the global financial crisis and unrelenting austerity continue to take their toll. But not only in Europe. Across the globe the far right is on the move: the great strength of right-wing populism in the U.S. Republican Party and Conservative Party in Canada; the increasing range of state surveillance and intolerance of dissent, features of what some have called ‘post democracy’; the success of the BJP in India and the return of right-wing...

And the winner is... apartheid?

Netanyahu is spending big on Oscars PR -- but you can help us get out ahead of him with an ad in Variety

. CHIP IN . . .

Dear PAOV,

Oscar Night is still 10 days away, but it’s already dominating the headlines -- and not just because Leo might finally win one.

The Academy Awards are at the center of a vital conversation about race and racism that’s unfolding nationwide, after the Academy nominated only white actors and actresses in its top 4 categories -- for the second year in a row.

Amidst the furor, the Israeli government slipped a little something into the goodie bags that the nominees take home at the end of the night: an all-expenses paid 10-day trip to Israel, worth an eye-popping $55,000 per person.

Hey rabble readers!

Justin Trudeau has a lot of promises to keep, that's for sure. Some of them are great. But many more don't go far enough. How can we separate the good from the bad? Or keep the pressure on to make sure they deliver -- to do more when they make good and respond when they don't? rabble has the answers. Soon we'll unveil our Liberal Promise Watch series to do all this and more. But we need your help to get it off the ground. Chip in a few bucks here to make it happen.

This week @ rabble.ca: Too much at stake. We need real consultation on the TPP.

rabble.ca - News for the rest of us

11 Feb 2016

Hey rabble readers!

2016 has been a bad year for journalism. As many as 16,000 media jobs have been cut since 2008. Who could have predicted that so many news outlets would fail so quickly? Well, we did. Several times. And the federal government did too with a Royal Commission on newspapers in 1981 that called for serious policy changes. Even though the capitalist model of journalism is failing, and failing fast, there's still hope for a better system.

Turkey: Commemoration of Ankara Bomb Atrocity - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 11 February 2016 (ITUC OnLine): Hundreds of mourners gathered yesterday at the Ankara Central Railway Station as a mark of respect for the 101 people who died and hundreds more who were injured in the atrocity of 10 October 2015. ITUC Deputy General Secretary Jaap Wienen joined ETUC General Secretary Luca Visentini and representatives of their national affiliates DISK and KESK, which had co-organised the October peace rally with other organisations. Two bombs exploded at the rally, and Turkish security forces were heavily criticised for blocking rescue efforts in the aftermath of the explosions, and using tear gas against the victims and those trying to give first aid.
