Dear Friends of SJS,

Thursday, Feb. 25th:
Super InTent City Block Party
3:30 to 7:00 pm
Super InTent City (Burdette & Quadra)
February 25th is the day that the BC government has named as eviction day for Super InTent City residents on the courthouse lawn in Victoria on the traditional territories of the Songhees & Esquimalt First Nations.
Super InTent City is safety and security for its residents and this extends to the broader community. The temporary and limited offers from the Provincial Government are not enough to meet the needs of ALL members of Super InTent City and we will stand together to say NO to displacement! We do not want to be dispersed into the parks, forests and doorways of the City...

Join us Wednesday February 24th to hear why now is the time for Supervised Consumption Services (SCS) in Victoria, and to discuss what is needed for our community to make this happen. All around us, things are changing. We see it in the new weather patterns from below the 49th parallel to the arctic circle. We can see it in the consistently low value of oil on the market. We can see it in the number of layoffs in the oil and gas sector. We can see it in those who stand up for their inherent and treaty rights in the face of new infrastructure. We can hear it in the voices of those calling out for justice.
We can help this change grow into a wave of new, bold action. Which is why we are hosting PowerShift Alberta, in Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton).

Freedom of Speech? Canada Condemns BDS Movement Against Israel
(Telesur) Feb. 23 - Canada’s new motion will condemn “any and all attempts” to promote the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction movement against Israel to end the occupation.
Canada can now formally condemn efforts to support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction movement against Israel after Parliament passed a Conservative-sponsored motion on Monday against BDS.
The motion passed by a wide margin of 229 to 51, CIJ News reported, with the Conservative Party that proposed the move and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party voting in favor and the...

The Israeli Ministry of Tourism is offering this year’s Oscar nominees a free VIP trip to Israel worth $50,000.
This is a cynical and desperate attempt by the Israeli government to fight its increasing international isolation with bribes to celebrities.
Take action: ask Oscar nominees to reject Israel’s propaganda tour
Oscar nominees Mark Rylance and Asif Kapadia have already promised not to visit Israel professionally.
An Israeli government press release admits the whitewash: "If they do indeed accept the invitation, their visit will have enormous resonance among millions of fans and followers, including social media."
As the Washington Post said, the initiative is a response to the growing strength of the movement for boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS).

LNG in Victoria? A Community Forum
With a massive liquified natural gas plant proposed for the Saanich Inlet, B.C.'s LNG industry is right on Victoria's doorstep. If approved, the facility will liquify 6 million tonnes of gas every year, filling tankers passing through the Saanich Inlet every 3-5 days for the next 25 years. While Steelhead LNG has already received export licenses to carry out the project, a number of environmental assessments are still pending, and residents have begun to voice their concerns about the risks the project poses.
Dr Eoin Finn, a retired chemist and partner of the major accounting and consulting firm, KPMG, will share his expert research on the safety, climate, ecological and economic impacts of B.C.'s proposed LNG industry, focusing on the Steelhead Malahat project. Updates will also be provided from the The Saanich Inlet Network.
Event sponsored by Sierra Club BC, Dogwood
Initiative, The Council of Canadians, The Saanich Inlet
Network, The Western Canada Wilderness Committee and Divest...
