Celebrate PKOLS: One Year Commemoration

Thursday, May 22nd at 5pm

W̱SÁNEĆ territory — Members of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation and allies in the community will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the reclamation of PKOLS (the name of the mountain formerly known as Mount Douglas) with a community picnic on Thursday May 22nd.

The public is invited to gather at the base of the mountain (where Shelbourne meets Cedar Hill Road) at 5pm, walking to the summit for the picnic at 6pm.

“We want to make sure that people remember that the name PKOLS was put back on the mountain,” says Eric Pelkey, hereditary chief and treaty officer for the Tsawout Nation, part of the broader W̱SÁNEĆ Nation whose territory includes the Saanich Peninsula and southern Gulf Islands. “We want to keep it in the forefront of people’s minds. We don’t want it to be forgotten.”

“For us, it is the re-telling of the history behind the signing of the treaty. The treaty is still there. People still have rights under the treaty,” Pelkey says.

Members of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation are working with other Coast Salish Nations and indigenous and non-indigenous allies to commemorate PKOLS and other indigenous place names in the territory.

“The thunderbird is a spiritual entity,” says Charles Elliot, an artist, carver and community activist from Tsartlip Nation who designed the thunderbird on the wooden sign installed at the PKOLS summit in a ceremony attended by 800 people on May 22, 2013. “It is a high-up symbol which we think is fitting for the action that we are taking. The thunderbird symbolizes the importance of what we are doing.”

People are welcome and encouraged to attend the community picnic on Thursday May 22nd.

The biggest threat Canadian public health care has ever faced

Dear PAOV On Monday we’re going to court to launch our case for Canadian public health care, aiming to introduce some very important evidence about the devastating consequences of Brian Day’s attack on Medicare.

For-profit clinic owner Brian Day has invoked the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to attack the very social program that best embodies the principles of fairness and equity the Charter stands for. Our evidence will prove that Brian Day’s plan to bring US-style care to Canada will harm patients’ health, disrupt medical practices, drive costs up, and weaken the Canadian economy.

This challenge poses a huge threat, and is one of the most significant constitutional challenges in Canadian history. If Dr. Day wins, the public health care system that Canadians rely on – and overwhelmingly support – will be effectively dismantled right across the country.

But here’s the thing - evidence shows that the kind of system Dr. Day is seeking would lead to longer wait times for care and poorer health for Canadians.[1] On top of that, there is NO evidence that private, for-profit care results in better care – not anywhere in the world.

While we applaud the provincial government’s excellent efforts to defend Medicare, we believe that there are important gaps in that defence. That’s why this week, the BC Health Coalition, along with Canadian Doctors for Medicare, two doctors and two patients, are applying to present evidence in the trial.[2]

Our group already has intervener status in the challenge, which means we’re participating directly in the case. On Monday we are applying to present evidence from our highly qualified experts, including:
  • The consequences of opening the door to U.S. health conglomerates;
  • The adverse impacts privatization will have on patients, but also on the health care provider who are committed to remaining in the public system;
  • What happened in Quebec when it opened its door to private hospitals;
  • What the loss of Medicare would mean to Canadian competitiveness;
  • How NAFTA prevents the door to privatization ever being closed, once it is opened.
Dr. Day’s true motives are clear. A provincial audit of Day’s Cambie Surgery Centre and the associated Specialist Referral Clinic found that patients were unlawfully extra-billed $491,654 in just 30 days. In one case, a Cambie patient was billed $7,215.00 for services that would only have cost $1,288.04 in BC’s public health care system. Auditors also found over $66,000 in overlapping claims – evidence that suggests double dipping for the same services.[3]

Charging patients nearly 6 times the actual cost of a procedure is not about human rights, and it’s not about improving care. It’s about profit.

We need to make sure this dangerous legal challenge is defeated so that we can get on with the work of improving a system that cares for all of us. Our application to present evidence to this case is an important step.

Music, March & Rally for an Oil-Free Coast: This Saturday!

Defend our climate May 10!

With the federal decision on the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tankers looming in June, and hundreds denied participation in the review process for Kinder Morgan’s new pipeline and tankers, the time is now for British Columbians to raise our voices against these dangerous projects and demand alternatives.

The federal government has been changing laws to push risky pipelines and tankers on an unwilling province, Enbridge omitted islands from a map of the Great Bear Rainforest to try and win us over, and Kinder Morgan has claimed that oil spills would be good for our communities. We can do better than this.

Join Sierra Club BC in Victoria this Saturday, May 10, for Defend Our Climate, March for an Oil-free Coast, a rally against pipeline and tanker projects that threaten B.C.'s coast with oil spills that would further accelerate climate change.

It will be a fun, family-friendly day beginning with music, spoken word poetry, and face painting in Beacon Hill Park at the bandshell, followed by a march to the legislature and a rally.

After the rally, we're inviting everyone to come to James Bay Community School Centre and join the discussion, to build connections in our community, learn more about these issues, and plan next steps.

12:30 p.m. - music at Beacon Hill Park bandshell
1:45 p.m. - march from Beacon Hill bandshell to B.C. Legislature building
2:30 p.m. - rally at B.C. Legislature
3:30 p.m. - discussions at James Bay Community School Centre (140 Oswego) (with food!)

[coalalert] Definition of private placement

NOTE: Here's the definition of "private placement" regarding my recent posting on the CEC stock.

Definition of 'Private Placement'

The sale of securities to a relatively small number of select investors as a way of raising capital. Investors involved in private placements are usually large banks, mutual funds, insurance companies and pension funds. Private placement is the opposite of a public issue, in which securities are made available for sale on the open market.

[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for week of May 5th

NEWS

As part of the Divest UVic campaign started by students, members of UVic’s Faculty Association have created an open letter calling on the university foundation to freeze all new endowment investments in fossil fuels and to develop a plan to divest all current holdings in fossil fuels within three years. The story was picked up on Huffington Post and other media. At the same time more evidence is being presented that continued investments in fossil fuels is a financially risky venture for the federal government. See Globe & Mail.

BC passed a new Water Sustainability Act last week, replacing the 105 year old BC Water Act. But many water researchers and activists including the UVic POLIS Project say we still have a long way to go to create regulations and enforce the Act. See The Province.
