Socia Justice Film Night

Social Justice Film Night Presents:
"THE SHOCK DOCTRINE"
7:00pm Thursday, April 172994 Douglas (BCGEU Hall) Victoria
Admission by Donation
From acclaimed filmmakers Michael Winterbottom (The Trip, The Killer Inside Me) and Mat Whitecross (The Road to Guantanamo), and based on Naomi Klein's provocative bestselling book of the same name, The Shock Doctrine is a gripping and incisive deconstruction of how radical free market policies have come to dominate the world.
Using shock therapy as a metaphor, the film investigates Klein's central idea of disaster capitalism. When countries are jolted by catastrophic events such as war or natural disasters, they are often subjected to totally un-regulated free market remedies that benefit corporations at public expense. The film traces the doctrine's beginnings from the theories of Milton Friedman and the Chicago School economists, through its implementation over the past 40 years...

[evoz] Merli Vanegas and family beaten by fascists in Caracas!!

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY

While visiting Venezuela, our friend, Merli Vanegas, Consul of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was attacked and her brother was stabbed by a mob opposed to the Bolivarian Revolution.

Merli and her brother are now out of danger and recuperating. [see text at the bottom of e-mail]

This violent mob is the same fascist opposition that the Canadian government is supporting and encouraging

Merli has been to Victoria several times to participate in public events, meet mayor and Council and participate in sports activities organized by local human an rights activists.

Please consider writing a note of support to Merli and wish her and her wounded brother a speedy recovery. These links belong to the Vancouver Consulate, leave your e-mail message there:

[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for week of April 14th

NEWS

UVic students are active in community-based mapping: Amy Becker (Anthropology), who is this year’s recipient of the Jamie Cassels Undergrad Research Award, has created a digital atlas of traditional First Nations place names on Vancouver Island using Google Earth technology. Chris Krasowski (Geography) is working on a project in conjunction with the City of Victoria to create a map of potential solar roofs in the city. The data will be incorporated into VicMap, the city’s online mapping resource.

UVic faculty are among the dozens of scientists who signed on to a letter in the National Post to protest the fact that over two dozen scientists had applied for intervener status at the upcoming National Energy Board hearings on the expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline project, yet all were rejected. They believe it is because they were proposed to speak about climate change.
