Support the City of Victoria’s motion on Clayoquot Sound mining
City Council to vote on motion April 10th
Hi Michael,
On Thursday, March 27th, in a preliminary meeting, City of Victoria councillors expressed support for the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation’s call for a moratorium on mining activity in its traditional territory. The motion, which came in response to a letter from Tla-o-qui-aht Chief Councillor Moses Martin, will be put to a final vote by City Council on Thursday, April 10th.
It’s time to thank the City of Victoria for their attention to this issue so far, and encourage City Council to pass the motion next week!
A bit of background…
Late last summer, the Province of British Columbia granted a permit to Vancouver-based Imperial Metals to conduct exploration at the Fandora site in the Tranquil Valley in Clayoquot Sound.
The site is in Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation territory, and last year the Tla-o-qui-aht declared the area a Tribal Park, a designation under which mining activity is not permitted.
The Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation is calling for a moratorium on mining activity in its territory, and has the support of the local municipal government, the District of Tofino.
At this stage, it is critical that we show as much support as possible for the rights of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and for a healthy, vibrant Clayoquot Sound – one that does not include risky, unsustainable mines.
Please take a minute to write a letter thanking the City of Victoria for their support and encouraging City Council to pass the motion backing the Tla-o-qui-aht’s call for a mining moratorium. This is a symbolic motion that will put pressure on the provincial government to respect the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and do the right thing for the environment in Clayoquot Sound.

NEWS
Two UVic scientists were featured prominently in media coverage on the latest IPCC UN report on climate change that came out last week. Tom Pedersen of the UVic-led Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions says a new 'industrial revolution' is underway, but the real challenge is to get people to understand the gravity of the climate situation and to take various actions to protect the planet. Ken Denman of Ocean Networks Canada is also quoted saying the issue is not lack of scientific evidence of climate change, but rather, the unwillingness of people and governments to act. See Ottawa Citizen (Postmedia News).
The province has taken another step forward in its first major legislative exercise involving water in a century. The
Water Sustainability Act completed its second reading last week and opposition MLAs debated and raised concerns about certain points related...

In recent months, crowdfunding has emerged as a viable alternative financial vehicle for causes. It seems to work best on "non-traditional" organizations: business start-ups, creative projects, films, and social causes that don't come from NGO's.
Our panelists will share their stories of the ups and downs from running successful crowdfunding campaigns.
Local digital strategist Jason Mogus will share the 6 things he's observed on how to know whether crowdfunding is a fit for your campaign or idea, and if so how to make it succeed.
Jordan Bower will discuss the relationship between your crowdfunding campaign and your broader fundraising and digital communications strategy.

Here are some upcoming events that may be of interest to you:
Waterlution is hosting a scenario planning workshop around the oil sands in Vancouver this April. I think this opportunity might be of interest to those young leaders in your network. The workshop is free of charge, lunch and dinner is provided and participants get a FourSight assessment, which provides insight into individuals thinking profiles, to add appreciation for how individuals work together over the day (and beyond).
Waterlution has been working for years to engage diverse perspectives in innovative ways forward within the energy sector. We feel the time has come to deliver something something new and potentially ground-breaking with this scenario planning format. We hope to have a broad spectrum of voices in the room to share knowledge and help craft scenarios of what the oil sands might look like in 2025. We invite respectful debate and exchange of polar perspectives so these divergent contributions can...
