9 Reasons Why 2013 Was a Slow and Painful Year for Freedom In Canada
A look back at some of the most significant threats to Canadian freedom over 2013 — a year in which there were many more reasons to believe our Prime Minister is doing everything in his power to twist this country into a true north suppressed and disparate. READ MORE
The Day a Federal Panel Overruled B.C. — And Nobody Noticed
While many pundits outside B.C. point to the joint review panel’s report as proof Enbridge’s oil tanker and pipeline project is in the public interest, one important question remains unexplored: how is it that the province of B.C. and the federal panel came to such vastly different conclusions? Video: Peace Valley Defenders Say No to Site C
Hello PAOV,
2013 sure was a wild ride! And we’re jumping right back into action this week, with public hearings resuming today over the proposed Site C Dam.
BC Hydro’s proposal to build a dam in the heart of British Columbia’s Peace River Valley threatens to flood over 100 kilometres of rich valley-bottom lands – including farmland, wildlife habitat, First Nations cultural sites and heritage sites.
The people of the region have spoken up time and time again, urging elected leaders to protect the Peace River Valley from the impacts of the Site C Dam. The project is in the midst of a joint federal-provincial review, and public hearings will be taking place in northern BC and Alberta until the end of January.
To help illustrate what’s at stake and why the Peace River Valley is so worth protecting, we’ve produced a short video featuring First Nations leaders, local farmers, politicians and citizens who say “No Dam Way!” to Site C.

Office 915 Ninth Floor Khotso House 62 Marshall Street Johannesburg, South Africa 19 December 2013 Dear Friends and Comrades, HUGE PALESTINE BANNERS AT NELSON MANDELA'S MEMORIAL IN SOWETO
Several Palestine banners - produced by South African trade unions, student groups and youth organizations - were spotted at last week's memorial for Nelson Mandela in Soweto. One of the banners, a tribute to Mandela's internationalism and support for the Palestinian struggle, displayed an iconic image of Nelson Mandela with fellow Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, and the well-known 1997 Madiba quote: "We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians". In addition, it was reported in Israeli...

From Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline to Keystone XL, Kinder Morgan, Line 9 and Energy East, the federal government and global oil industry are working together to undermine our democracy, gut our environmental laws, and ram pipelines through local opposition.
Over the last two weeks, as scandals swirl around his office, the Prime Minister has declared again and again that he will double down on his push to bet our economy on boom and bust industries - no matter the consequences.
This is a crucial moment. Over the coming weeks and months, our federal government will make decisions about tar sands pipelines that would do permanent damage to our communities and...

The purpose of the research study was to identify and measure the perceived effects of shellfish aquaculture on the Baynes Sound social- ecological system. Additionally, stakeholders in the survey also identified a range of environmental, social, and economic issues and changes that could affect the future well-being of the communities in the area. “Of the dozen issues presented in the survey, 75 percent of the respondents considered coal mine development to have a negative effect on the well-being of communities in the Baynes Sound area,” said CoalWatch president John Snyder. “ These findings...

Update: September 30th — What a phenomenal response! In just 10 days we've reached over $150,000! Based on this incredible outpouring of support, the Hupacasath First Nation have now filed the initial legal documents with the Federal Court of Appeal, securing their right to appeal!
The Hupacasath are prepared to fight this case to the end, but they may be forced to withdraw the application for appeal unless we reach our fundraising goal in the next four weeks. Please make your donation today, then share this with everyone so we can reach our goal, fully fund the appeal, and make sure the Hupacasath don't get stuck with a major debt for this historic legal challenge.
Thank you so much.
Together, you’ve made it possible for the Hupacasath First Nation to take the Harper government to court to challenge the Canada-China FIPA - a reckless investor deal that would expose Canada to unlimited risk from costly lawsuits in secretive tribunals and undermine the rights of our democratically elected governments for the next 31 years.1
Thanks to your generous donations, the Hupacasath’s legal team were able to make their case in federal court in Vancouver on June 5, 6 & 7th.
Unfortunately, after just 3 days in court, the judge sided with the government. But this fight isn’t over yet. The Hupacasath’s lawyers believe they have grounds for an appeal, and the Hupacasath are prepared to take this case to the next level to stand up for all of our rights.

The Pacific Northwest is under attack. We will fight back: defending what we love, and our climate future. Big coal, oil, and gas plan to transform the NW coastline from Oregon up to Alaska into a dirty fossil fuel corridor with over 15 export terminals proposed.
On July 27th folks from throughout the Northwest will come together joining national Summer Heat actions for a fun and family friendly action and combine fights to stop energy extraction, infrastructure and export. We wanna demonstrate what it’ll look like if fossil fuel corporations try to imperil the climate by moving fossil fuels down the Columbia.
Sign up and register to attend – joinsummerheat.org/pdx/ – ideally with a kayak though we need you on the land as well! We’ll be in touch about opportunities to help us plan this action and as more details to emerge in the coming days. Could you pass along an invitation to Harper's pal, Joe Oliver, the Minister of Natural Resources?
He's invited to join the Tar Sands Healing Walk - a tour of the frontlines of Fort McMurray, Alberta to expose the impacts oil sands development has on local First Nations communities. But so far, no word from Joe!
Here's a recent article in the The Guardian about the Healing Walk: Bill McKibben and Naomi Klein to join Canada's tar sands 'healing walk'.
The Healing Walk is really soon, July 5th and 6th, so there are only a few days left to show your support for these communities and to tell Harper's pal to attend the Healing Walk.

From the Heart - Enter into the Journey of Reconciliation
A new 90-min. theatre production about the transformative stories that move non-indigenous people to see their relationships with their aboriginal neighbours in new ways. This won’t be anything like an ordinary play - it'll be an experience.
Opening on June 12th at a donated space in the Uptown mall, the audience will be invited to move through a vast, beautiful labyrinth made of thousands of metres of colourful fabric, hundreds of doors and windows, and lit with paper lantern lights. In the nooks and alcoves along the way, the audience will encounter 16 scenes, songs, shadow theatre performances and visual installations that were all created this past winter by an intercultural cast of 30 community members ranging in age from 18 to 79.
The script development co-facilitator was Kwakwaka'wakw performance artist/ poet Krystal Cook, with singing and movement coaching from Bisia Belina.
The 14,000 sq ft. labyrinth was co-designed by two internationally acclaimed designers: eco-architect Mark Lakeman and tensile fabric architect Mar Ricketts.
The project was inspired by Paulette Regan’s bestselling book, Unsettling the Settler Within.
To learn more about the project, watch the 5-min, video here:
Directions: come south along Blanshard from Ravine Way, turn into Uptown at the RBC sign and go UP the ramp, then to the right and park. The performance space is on the opposite end of the parking lot of the RBC branch.
The space is wheelchair accessible.
