Latest at the BCCLA

Dear BCCLA Supporter,

You may have heard about our recent advocacy with partner organizations against the cruel Bill 22 creating a new form of detention and involuntary health care in BC for youth who have overdosed. The government announced they are pausing the bill! This is an important victory, and we continue to advocate for the bill to be fully withdrawn.

Here’s an inside look into what else has been brewing at the BCCLA during the past two months.

TD Bank + COVID prison investments

During the early days of the pandemic, TD Bank bought tens of thousands of shares in private prison giant GEO Group.

Now, GEO Group facilities have become hotbeds of COVID, and death toll keeps rising.

Call on TD to divest from GEO Group and all private prison companies now.

Sign the petition

A,

We just found out that in the midst of the pandemic, TD Bank increased its shares in private prisons giant GEO Group by a whopping by 8000%.

And now, TD has blood on its hands from COVID deaths because of its GEO investment -- people are dying of the virus at GEO Group’s facilities because of a total lack of preventative measures.

That's just the tip of the iceberg of GEO Group’s appalling track record of human rights abuses. Along with CoreCivic, they run Trump’s concentration camps along the Mexican-US border where kids are held in cages and separated from their parents.

This is why every major bank in the world promised...

Trumps Withdrawal From WHO: A Cover-Up for His Abject Failure on COVID-19

Trump’s Withdrawal From WHO: A Cover-Up for His Abject Failure on COVID-19

Prabir Purkayastha

Microbes do not recognize borders. We are all safe only when everybody is safe. In a pandemic, to attack the only body we have for global cooperation endangers everyone. That is why the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) is dangerous not only for the United States, but for all of the world.

Trump’s decision to withdraw from the WHO is a continuation of his wielding a wrecking ball to the international framework of treaties and organizations. Whether it is arms control, climate change, trade or the WHO, the United States sees these agreements and institutions as fetters on its hegemonic powers to shape the world. Trump may express this pathology in its most ugly form, but the disease runs far deeper.

Trump’s excuse for withdrawing from the WHO is that it did not do its job well on the COVID-19 epidemic and was soft on China. Condemning Trump’s move, Devi Sridhar, professor of global public health...

Oil and Alberta Politics: Who’s Funding the United Conservative Party?

Matthew Corbeil

The case can easily be made that Alberta’s United Conservative Party (UCP) is Canada’s most dangerous political formation. Led by former Harper-era cabinet minister and far-right evangelical Christian Jason Kenney, the UCP government is currently taking a sledgehammer to Alberta’s provincial state, gutting the province’s fiscal and regulatory capacities, attacking its public servants, privatizing its healthcare system, undoing basic labour protections, suppressing dissent, and eliminating any and every barrier to the fossil fuel industry’s profits -- the climate crisis notwithstanding.

For many on the left, it seems a reasonable assumption that the UCP is the creature of the fossil fuel giants that dominate the province’s economy. The party does little to conceal its love affair with all things oil and gas, nor its animosity toward the industry’s critics. But the party’s financial disclosures tell a different story. In fact, if party financing is any indicator, the largest fossil fuel corporations are far from the UCP’s main constituency. Instead, the UCP is very...

Paov Stand in Solidarity with #WWOA

Paov Stand in Solidarity with #WWOA r1 Paov On June 19th, 2020 The Saskatchewan provincial Government struck down bipartisan Bill #618 which would legislate a strategy for suicide prevention. The bill was unanimously rejected by the Sask Party, and in response Tristen Durocher and Chris Merasty walked 635 km from July 2 to the 31st from Air Ronge to Regina. The ceremony and walk are called Walking With Our Angels (#WWOA), representing the many lives that have been lost to suicide. A camp has been set up across from the Legislature in Regina, SK and Durocher is now on a hunger strike until meaningful legislation is passed. Durocher, who is a Métis fiddler from Buffalo Narrows, says he began this campaign after playing at the funerals of too many...

Nestlé wants to crush this town

Nestlé is stealing water from a drought-stricken community in France.

Local residents are determined to fight back -- but they’re running out of money. So they’ve asked for your help.

Can you chip in to stop Nestlé bullying this town?

Donate CA$94 now

A,

Local residents in Vittel, France, are exhausted. They're in a desperate fight to stop Nestlé from pumping their precious groundwater. Every year they watch as the levels sink to dangerously new lows and they face yet another drought.

But these volunteers aren’t giving up just yet: they have another shot at giving Nestlé the boot.

Right now, Nestlé is facing charges for pumping water without permission. The corporate giant is in panic mode -- with enough pressure it could cave to the community and finally leave.

These volunteers are paying out their own pockets for travel, banners and expert legal advice -- but unless we help them, they’ll run out of money in weeks.

A, will you help this town fight Nestlé?

The Collapse of Healthcare in Peru

The Collapse of Healthcare in Peru

Yanis Iqbal

On 11 March 2020, Peru declared a 90-day national sanitary emergency. Subsequently, the country announced a total lockdown beginning 16 March, 2020. Despite implementing one of the earliest and strictest COVID-19 containment lockdowns in Latin America, Peru has gotten trapped in the turmoil of rising COVID-19 cases. With more than 420,000 Coronavirus cases, Peru has become the third-worst hit country in Latin America. The country also has the highest excess death rates (count of deaths relative to a normal year) with the number of deaths between 16 March and 31 May being 87 per cent more than a normal year.

The current COVID-19 catastrophe in Peru is a natural corollary of an unbridled process of the self-valorization of capital. As a result of this aggressive accumulation of capital, the healthcare sector in today’s Peru is teetering on the edge of an abyss. In this country, "public health facilities for molecular testing are sparse and only 500 beds in intensive care units exist for a population of...

A Window of Opportunity for Leftist Politics?:
How to Continue In and After the Corona Crisis

Institute for Critical Social Analysis, Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung

The current crisis represents a new form of crisis and can certainly be understood as a sign of things to come. This is because it is not only the result of a dynamic internal to the economy as was the case with the financial crisis, which many on the left had predicted and foreseen. Today’s crisis is what the left has called an intersectional crisis: one in which the metabolic process between nature and society has been disturbed and is thus experiencing a crisis, manifesting itself in the climate crisis as well as through the spread of pathogens. In this regard, the corona crisis is externally induced, every form of society needs to react to it and limit economic and social activities for a while. And yet, the crisis is also part of the capitalist dynamic, which itself creates profound crises for the societal relationship to nature. It is in this...

Viral Ideas of the Pandemic Moment

LeftStreamed:

Viral Ideas of the Pandemic Moment

"The meanings that COVID-19 takes on in different contexts is a result of the different ways it is being mediated -- public health officials, news media, Hollywood, and the new spaces of social media. These representations are not neutral. All have consequences for what it means to live in the time of COVID-19. They influence fundamental ideas about who is at risk and who is not, about vulnerability and invulnerability. They authorize germ panic, economies of fear and blame. These are the viral ideas of our pandemic moment."

The film explores the social cultural side of the pandemic. It examines the media response and its effects. It looks at the rise of racism connected to fear surrounding the virus, increased police power and other effects.

Nestle North America Water

A,

Nestle Waters Canada is packing up shop and leaving the bottled water industry behind -- and it’s looking like the mega-corporation is set to do the same in the rest of North America.

Late last month, Nestle said that it is considering selling its water brands in North America in 2021 because it’s not worth doing business here. And two weeks later, it sold all its operations in Canada.

And why is Nestle quitting the North America bottled water business? Because SumOfUs members like you never gave up the fight against Nestle, attacking from all sides in British Columbia and Ontario, as well as in Michigan, Oregon, California and Florida.

This is a huge win in Canada -- Nestle Waters North America has annual sales of 4 billion dollars and thanks to your support, it is ready to walk away from all that.

You’ve done so much work to push back against Nestle’s water sucking ways in the past 5 years that it would be impossible to name it all here -- so here is a snapshot of some of the biggest moments against Nestle.

Elon Musk and the Overthrow of Democracy in Bolivia

Elon Musk and the Overthrow of Democracy in Bolivia

Vijay Prashad and Alejandro Bejarano

On July 24, 2020, Tesla’s Elon Musk wrote on Twitter that a second US "government stimulus package is not in the best interests of the people." Someone responded to Musk soon after, "You know what wasn’t in the best interest of people? The US government organizing a coup against Evo Morales in Bolivia so you could obtain the lithium there." Musk then wrote: "We will coup whoever we want! Deal with it."

Musk refers here to the coup against President Evo Morales Ayma, who was removed illegally from his office in November 2019. Morales had just won an election for a term that was to have begun in January 2020. Even if there was a challenge against that election, Morales’ term should rightfully have continued through November and December of 2019. Instead, the Bolivian military, at the behest of Bolivia’s far right and the United States government, threatened Morales; Morales went into exile in Mexico and is now in Argentina. In solidarity with the Tiny House Warriors

Stand with Indigenous communities resisting the TransMountain pipeline. r1

Friends,

This past weekend, pipeline supporters rallied in Blue River, BC — where construction on the dirty TransMountain tar sands pipeline is slated to begin this summer — to call for the eviction of the Tiny House Warriors from their own unceded and unsurrended territories. We want to be clear. This was a violent and racist display of white nationalism.

The Tiny House Warriors and other Secwepemc land defenders have been standing up to this dangerous pipeline for years. We stand in solidarity with them in their ongoing fight against the TransMountain pipeline and construction of man camps on their territories.

Here are two actions you can take to fight racism against Indigenous communities standing up to pipeline projects like the TransMountain pipeline:

    1. Watch and share this powerful video on racism and pipelines. In this video, Dr. Pam Palmater (renowned professor, activist, and lawyer) explains the impacts of Canada's relentless and racist pursuit of pipelines on Indigenous peoples.
    2. Watch and share this message from Tiny House Warriors. Secwepemc land defenders are defending their territories from resource extraction and man camps.

We know the TransMountain pipeline will take us in...
