The MST on the Crisis in Brazil: Economy, Education and Politics
MST (Landless Rural Workers' Movement)
We are experiencing a prolonged crisis of the capitalist system and its reproduction. However, the pandemic has accelerated the consequences of the crisis on people, the forms of labour exploitation and natural goods. The deep crisis runs through the themes of value, limits of capital expansion, and overproduction of goods. It is also a crisis of a civilizing character, which tends to deepen the forms of barbarization of human life, especially of the most impoverished and of black people. Its dimensions are economic, political, social, environmental, and health.
The pandemic reminds us of the urgency to address the environmental and agrarian issues at the center of the political disputes that are currently being faced. Many scholars and scientists point to the origin of the pandemic in the imbalance of human beings with nature and the destruction of tropical forests, causing changes in ecosystems and the forms of animal life.
The current phase of capital development requires an...

Paov,
I'll cut to the chase. Yesterday, Trudeau announced $2 billion in public funding for safe school reopenings1, which sounds like a lot, until you realize he might be spending more than $25 billion on the Trans Mountain pipeline.
Of course, we don’t know for sure because former Finance Minister Morneau hid the cost of the pipeline from the public since the start of the pandemic.
Enough is enough. We deserve to know the true cost of TMX. Sign the petition calling on Trudeau and our new Finance Minister Freeland to release the true cost.
The last time the cost of this pipeline jumped from $5 to $13 billion, support for the project plummeted. I can’t imagine that most people in this country want to see us spending even more money on this climate-wrecking pipeline when there are so many people and communities that need it more.
Every dollar we spend on this pipeline is a dollar that isn’t going to...

How We Move Is How We Survive:
A Statement for Free and Just Transit
Free Transit Toronto, Free Transit Ottawa, Courage, Climate Justice Toronto, and others
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected public transit in cities and towns across Canada. There are fewer riders as people who are able to stay home avoid public transit to physically distance. For those who rely on it, however, transit remains a necessity as it was pre-pandemic. Our governments’ responses have been to threaten massive transit budget cuts.
We write this letter to underline the necessity for further public investment in public transit, not a move away from it – and certainly not a move back toward transit fare enforcement. We write as organizations and individuals committed to a future for transit that is public, free, expanded, and just.
We embrace mobility as a human right and understand that for many, public transit is a necessity people rely on to get to work and move within our city. Public transit must therefore be a priority for federal...

Dear friend,
This is our friend, JK Thimma of the Jenu Kuruba tribe. Like his ancestors before him, he worships the tiger, and his people have called the Nilgiri forests of southern India home since time immemorial.
“Protecting the forest, birds and animals is part of our way of life and we’ve always done it,” JK told Survival. “If you look at every corner of this world, wherever there is forest, there will be Adivasis [indigenous people].”
Today is International Tiger Day. We should be thanking the Jenu Kuruba for protecting the tigers.
Instead, the Indian government is trying to kick them out of their homelands in the name of “conservation.”
And the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is guilty of using U.S. federal money to “facilitate” these illegal evictions.
WCS has led the call to remove tribal people from India’s tiger reserves for years and claims the evictions are “voluntary relocations.”
But there’s nothing “voluntary” about them.

Pharma giants Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca and Pfizer are signaling they’ll charge through the roof for a covid-19 vaccine, leaving millions priced out.
Tell these powerful companies to share their covid-19 knowledge so we can make life-saving treatment affordable for everyone!
A,
Humanity is desperate for a covid-19 vaccine. But Big Pharma will hold it to ransom when they find one - and turn the pandemic into their biggest-ever money spinner. Execs are already signaling that they’ll charge through the roof for a vaccine, which could leave millions priced out!
It doesn’t need to be this way. Costa Rica’s government has created a knowledge pool where countries can share information, and together find an affordable treatment.
But after getting billions in public funding, powerful pharmaceutical companies are hoarding the information we need. So we need to demand that they join the knowledge pool and share what they’ve discovered. Let’s up the pressure with millions of people around the world calling...

On the Eviction of 450 families from Quilombo Campo Grande, Brazil
Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad
During the second week of August in Brazil, the ruthlessness of state violence by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro was on full display against the Quilombo Campo Grande community established by the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), the landless workers movement of Brazil. After sixty hours of resistance against the military police, the community had to retreat from what they had built. Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad wrote a message of solidarity to the families of the community below.
On 12 August, Governor Romeu Zema of Minas Gerais sent in the military police to evict 450 families from the twenty two-year old Quilombo Campo Grande. For three days they surrounded the camp, intimidating families, in an attempt to force them to leave their land, but the landless families resisted. On 14 August, using tear gas and sound grenades, they were finally successful. They destroyed a community that had built homes and grew organic crops (including coffee, sold...

There are billions of dollars on the line in the TransMountain Pipeline project, PAOV.
Upwards of $13 billion in public dollars have already been committed to the TransMountain (TMX) pipeline. And Prime Minister Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland are still refusing to release the actual cost of the project — by now, it could be well over $20 billion.
Here's the truth: we are in the midst of a global pandemic and we are on the cusp of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Every single dollar spent on this pipeline is a dollar that could be spent helping Canada build back better with a Green New Deal.
That is why we are bringing thousands of people together around the country to create a people-powered movement strong enough to demand Trudeau and Freeland release the cost of the pipeline.
But we cannot do...

Dear BCCLA supporter,
What if I told you that your provincial government had passed a new law without input from stakeholders? What if I told you this new law allowed cabinet ministers to write new laws without oversight from the public and without approval from the Legislative Assembly?
You’d call this an abuse of power, right?
That’s exactly what has happened in BC and Alberta.
Bill 10 in Alberta and Bill 19 in BC are both new laws that expand government powers and limit accountability.
This is a problem. These new laws limit your ability to hold your elected officials accountable. This an unjust limit on your fundamental democratic right.
This cannot stand. We want to protect your democratic rights, and make sure government overreach is held to account.
We’re gearing up for a fight. We’re going to pressure the government in BC to roll back the powers they’ve given themselves under Bill 19. We’re also...

Havana Once Again Under Quarantine
Last month The Bullet published a report on Cuba’s remarkable success in meeting the threat of COVID-19, "Cuba in the Last Stretch of the Pandemic." At the time there was good reason to accept Fernando Ravsberg’s assessment that Cuba had successfully met the challenge, that the worst was over and that the mop-up operation then under way would limit the virus’s impact on the island’s population even further.
But events have taken a different course, as Ravsberg explains in the article below. Taking advantage of human errors, the virus has punched through the weak spots in the nation’s defenses, particularly in and around the capital region. The article here is an update, and should be read together with the earlier one, which contains a good deal of information about the unique strategy that Cuba developed to protect its population. Cuba continues to rely on the same strategy in this new phase of the struggle against the pandemic.
This report by Ravsberg first appeared on the Salvadorian digital daily news...

Revolution Means Taking Care of the Future
Verónica Gago
Thinking a socialist future implies imagining what this future might look like, and then asking how we can get there. Utopia, as conceived by revolutionary theory, implies a pragmatic aspect relating to the question of transition. Transition is a challenge. History has shown that it is not linear: no direct path leading from one point to another exists. Instead, we need to consider transition as a process. Feminist body politics aimed at dismantling rigid norms of gender and sexuality show that revolutions take time. The temporal space created by this, however, opens up a field for exploration and experimentation, a terrain on which contradictory forces clash. Is it possible to walk such a transitional path without knowing where it will lead?
The struggles now unfolding in Chile and across the globe against neoliberal privatization, the destruction of welfare provisions, and the progressive commodification of our lives stand in a largely inverse relation to such a revolutionary temporality. Their project is less future-orientated than it is...

A,
As you read this, palm oil companies are burning the rainforest home of orangutans to a crisp. Why? To make way for yet more palm oil plantations.
Unilever -- maker of Dove soap and Magnum ice cream -- is STILL buying palm oil from these rainforest destroyers.
Unilever is hoping its links to the forest fires go unnoticed. You can change that.
Your donation today will pay for a top video squad to capture drone footage of the raging fires, leak it to journalists -- and expose Unilever’s greed.

Luxury Eco-Communism: A Wonderful World is Possible
This film is very much not a utopian vision of the future. In fact, the very different strategies of utopian and materialist thinking for imagining the future are discussed in the first part of the film. Instead of a utopia, the film presents a wide variety of issues, suffering and problems experienced by people, whose common source is the capitalist system itself. It then presents a vision of how things could be very different in each case, without the systemic priorities of the world capitalist system. This gives us a very different viewpoint upon ecology, technology and human flourishing.
Written and produced by Garry Potter. Narration by Liza Nicklin. Original music by Liza Nicklin.
