UBI Without Public Services is a Neoliberal’s Paradise
Rosa Pavanelli
From tech-billionaires to socialist leaders, Universal Basic Income (UBI) has caught the imagination of many across the political spectrum. This mechanism, which would give everyone regular cash payments that are enough to live on, regardless of income or work status, is increasingly promoted as a key policy to maintain social stability and ensure a decent standard of living.
Yet many in the labour movement have been unsure how to approach the topic. This is why our trade union federation, Public Services International (PSI), has been working with the New Economics Foundation (NEF) to produce a detailed labour analysis on the issue. Examining 14 trials from India to Alaska, the report found that although UBI trials provided valuable insights into the nature of work and welfare, there is little evidence to suggest that UBI is the best tool to address the core challenges of our time: inequality, wealth redistribution, precarious work, and digitisation.
What the studies do demonstrate is that giving cash payments to...

A,
Because of you, we just won a massive victory to protect Canada’s public healthcare today.
In a landmark decision, Justice Steeves just dealt a huge blow to the efforts of Brian Day, aka Doctor Profit, to undermine Canada’s publicly-funded medicare system and turn it to a U.S.-style profit driven system. This decision ensures that access to health care in Canada will continue to be based on need and not on ability to pay.
And you were there since the first week of the trial when we made a big splash outside the BC Supreme Court.

Outside BC Supreme Court during the first week of the trial against Doctor Profit.
Since 2016, members like you chipped in to make sure top lawyers were able to testify at the hearings. And because of you, we were able to give a press conference outside the courthouse, and deliver nearly 40,000 signatures to Doctor Profit’s Cambie Surgeries Corporation.

Weve pulled off the improbable

Canada in the World
Tyler Shipley
"When the European settlers arrived, they needed land to live on. The First Nations peoples agreed to move to different areas to make room for the new settlements." -- Complete Canadian Curriculum (Grade 3), 2017.
In 2017, the Complete Canadian Curriculum guide for third graders claimed that "the First Nations peoples moved to areas called reserves, where they could live undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of the settlers." This was a radical and absurd misrepresentation of Canadian history, but it was reflective of a longstanding ideological project to convince Canadians that their country is a well-intentioned contributor to the greater good of the world. In that version of history, Canada has been a haven for refugees, it has been a voice of reason in times of international crisis, it has sought to preserve peace when others wanted war, it has made sacrifices when war was necessary to defeat injustice, and it has helped other nations build prosperous and functional societies like the one Canada built after Indigenous...

Friends,
Next Monday, Trudeau’s cabinet will meet to lay out their plans for an economic recovery. We can only hope it will be good enough to get people and communities through the worst health and economic crises of our lifetime.
To be honest, it doesn’t bode well that with every passing day, our government's sinking billions upon billions of dollars into the TransMountain (TMX) pipeline.
We’re ramping up pressure to make sure they have their priorities straight. Will you join in?
First off, join thousands to call on Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Freeland to show us the true cost of TMX. Sign the petition now.
Next up, join us to make sure that these thousands of voices are heard. On September 14th at 10:00 am PT/ 1:00 PM ET, we will hold a massive e-rally to deliver thousands of signatures to Trudeau and Freeland right in the middle of their cabinet meeting. It will be a powerful moment with an incredible lineup of speakers and climate activists. RSVP to join in.

Experiments in Free Transit
Joshua DeVries
Among the few positive aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, some localities have taken the impressive step of implementing free transit. Several cities in Ohio, including Akron, Canton, Toledo and Youngstown announced free fares as of March 16. Towns in Vermont and Nevada have done so as well. Unfortunately, local officials are quite clear that these are only temporary for health purposes and will be reversed once it is "safe."
Over the last several decades, though, many cities around the world have experimented with free transit. Free Public Transit editors Judith Delheim and Jason Prince collect a dozen-and-half essays of these stories written by activists, academics and journalists involved in the issue. Many cities have reduced or even given free fares for specific groups, generally the elderly or students. Delheim and Prince compile pieces on more political efforts.
The main part of the book consists of 15 articles of implementation and struggles around free transit in 14 cities or regions. (Two chapters are about Bologna, Italy.) Half of...

On the Current Crisis in Turkey-Greece Relations
Panagiotis Sotiris
Relations between Turkey and Greece are currently in a phase of escalating crisis. This development can be traced back to a number of reasons. Firstly, Turkey is in a phase of intensified “power projection” in its attempt to achieve the status of a regional power, something made evident in a series of choices: its involvement in the Syrian crisis (including invading to secure a “safe zone” and answer the ”existential” threat of a quasi-state Kurdish entity in North-East Syria), active involvement in the Libyan civil war (where it played a crucial role in changing the balance of forces in favour of the Tripoli government), and the way it pushes forward its particular version of a “just” division of drilling rights in the South-East Mediterranean.
Yet it is not simply about “oil.” It is about regional power status, nationalist aspirations, and leadership (Turkey has attempted to be the main force putting forward the political agenda of the Muslim Brotherhood). This political line can be described as...

Reading Capitalist Realism Ten Years On
Matthew Flisfeder
Today, in the interregnum of the post-crisis, austerity-driven, global neoliberal capitalist society, we are confronted with a range of contradictions potentially threatening our very way of life on Earth. From looming ecological catastrophes and the threat of the capitalocene, to the rise of artificial intelligence and digital automation threatening stagnation, to refugee crises and culture wars, and even to a resurgence of new economic crises unforeseen by mainstream economists, it would appear as though it is more necessary than ever to challenge the old Thatcherite dogma that "there is no alternative" (TINA) to the existing system. That hopeless, cynical claim that even if capitalism is full of flaws and fissures, it is still the least bad system we’ve got, so grin and bear it…
But resisting this reified and disavowed root of the conundrum in the very capitalism that the TINA formula defends -- if we are to confront these problems head on -- perhaps it is time for us on the Left to be somewhat...

Political Openings: Class Struggle During and After the Pandemic
Sam Gindin
For some on the left, the economic breakthrough brought on by the pandemic was the general consensus, not least among economists, for an astonishing increase in fiscal spending. Relative to the economy’s size, the stimulus introduced so far in the US is already double (in Canada triple) what it was during the 2008-09 crisis, with more to come. And the stimulus in that earlier crisis was the largest since WWII, leading the OECD to declare that the earlier intervention "now seems like a small-scale rehearsal for the [present] disruptions to our socioeconomic system."
The insistence by the adherents to Keynesianism and Modern Monetary Theory that there is generally more room for increases in public spending than governments let on, especially during deep crises, is valid. Their conclusion that something fundamental and perhaps permanent has changed in terms of looser spending constraints is seductive -- it would indeed make things easier if all that was needed was to elect the right people and have...

The Burmese military massacred Rohingya families, raped women and girls, and razed entire villages. Now Facebook is refusing to share the evidence which could prove that the military intended to commit genocide.
Let's raise a huge global outcry and demand that Facebook stop covering up these heinous crimes!
A,
Three years ago, the Burmese military massacred Rohingya families, raped women and girls, and razed entire villages. 800,000 people were forced to flee to Bangladesh and are still facing a major humanitarian crisis.
Hate speech and disinformation about the Rohingya spread like wildfire on Facebook and fanned the flames of this genocide. Facebook took down much of the violence-inciting content, but now it's refusing to share the evidence which could prove that the Burmese military intended to commit genocide against the Rohingya.
But with Facebook under increasing scrutiny from the public and even its own employees, it could...
