Beekeepers, activists and SumOfUs staff protesting at Bayer's AGM in Germany in 2017

Sylvia,

Our beekeeper friends are battling Bayer in court to defend our right to protest its toxic pesticides.

Now their case has made it all the way to the highest court, one step away from finally defeating Bayer. But they’re running out of cash to cover the legal costs.

They’re asking for our help – and the stakes couldn’t be higher. If Bayer wins, it could call the police and shut down peaceful protests when we speak out publicly at its shareholder meetings. Other corporations could follow suit and also shut us down.

But it's not over yet. With your help, Bayer could still lose. Together we can help these beekeepers fight to defeat Bayer in court. Sylvia, can we count on you to chip in?

The Intercept has chosen a harder road

Instead of partisan clickbait, our team is hard at work on in-depth investigations of military and corporate power. The support of readers like you is what enables us to continue publishing journalism that would never find a home in the corporate media.

The most profitable way for any public figure to build an audience is to tell people what they want to hear — which is usually that everything wrong with America is the fault of an opposing political faction or party.

Trust me, I get the temptation. I could spend all my time decrying the Trumpist far right — but pontificating about the obvious is a missed opportunity to shed light on the deeper and more enduring injustices at the heart of American empire.

As an Intercept reader, I know you appreciate the importance of independent reporting that exposes the...

I'm Matilda, 350 Europe's digital climate campaigner r1

Climate Spotlight: Matilda Borgstrom

Hi Paov -

My name is Matilda Borgström and this is my story of my work as a climate campaigner with 350.org.

Despite what you might think, this email won't contain any thrilling stories of me gluing myself to a fossil-funding bank or scaling an oil rig in the name of climate justice. The reason: I'm a digital climate campaigner. What does that mean? I do my climate activism on a laptop, in the middle of the Scottish countryside, while drinking cups of coffee and being frequently interrupted in my work by my large, hairy (very muddy) dog Merlyn.

Matilda and her dog, Merlyn, at Matilda's desk
Me and Merlyn at my desk, busy thinking up new campaigns to take down the fossil fuel industry.

While my work might not be as adrenaline-pumping as some of my...

60 years of advocacy

This is a test r1 We want to do this work as long as necessary ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Dear Friend,

This year, the BCCLA turns 60. Thank you so much for standing with us, year after year.

We are continuing to educate the public on their rights, especially our next generation of advocates. This year, we launched our new Digital Privacy Rights for Youth project, which informs youth on their rights concerning their personal electronic devices like cell phones and laptops.

Our work wouldn’t have been possible without supporters like you.
Friend, with your support, we can have the resources to stand up on your behalf - to litigate important cases, advocate for systemic solutions through interventions and law reforms, and provide accessible educational resources.

We want to do this work as long as necessary to uphold civil liberties and human rights. This holiday season, will you make a year-end donation, so we can continue this important work for years to come?

Two squirrel monkeys sitting in trees in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Sylvia,

For hundreds of generations, the Huaorani Tribe of Ecuador has lived in harmony with the rainforest, alongside sloths, endangered birds, and majestic jaguars.

But now a road has opened up access to their home – bringing in oil and timber companies who want to bulldoze millions of trees and evict them from their land.

It’s a humanitarian and ecological catastrophe. But we can help make it stop.

A small but determined conservation group is working with the Huaorani people to buy up strategic plots of land before they can be sold for drilling and logging. If we all chip in, we can create a buffer zone that shields vast swathes of Amazon rainforest from development – but we need to move fast.

Every 1 $/£/€ will protect one square metre of rainforest – making sure it stays in Huaorani hands forever. Can you chip in today?

If...

Tell the Justice Department to drop the prosecution of WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange now

Publishing is not a crime. Journalists serve the public and democracy by publishing information that reveals the corruption and wrongdoing of the powerful.

Publishing is not a crime.

Twelve years after WikiLeaks exposed the dirty secrets of U.S. diplomacy in a massive publication of State Department cables, co-founder Julian Assange remains in a high-security British prison awaiting extradition to the United States. He faces espionage charges that could add up to 175 years in U.S. prison.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has the power to drop the case against Assange immediately. Instead, the Biden administration has continued the effort at prosecution begun under former President Donald Trump.

Assange’s indictment presents a critical threat to the First Amendment and to press freedom in the U.S. and abroad. It sets a precedent that could easily be used against any journalist publishing sensitive information — a major reason...

Climate Spotlight: Supporting local opposition to the fossil fuel industry in Latin America

Meet Maria Victoria, a 350.org climate campaigner in Latin America. r1

Climate Campaigner Spotlight: Maria Victoria Emanuelli

¡Hola, amigx!

My name is Maria Victoria, and I'm writing to you from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I live. I am 350.org's Latin America Senior Campaigner, and I spend most of my days doing what I like the most: meeting, strategizing, and supporting fellow activists invested in building a better and more equitable future for us all.

I've been a campaigner for many years now – long enough to know that there is a lot of truth to the saying that "together we are stronger." That's why 350.org in Latin America is going all in for building and strengthening grassroots connections in 2023. We have ambitious plans to train local activists and leaders, provide support materials, help build campaigns, foster new links and networks, and help already existing ones to flourish! And I feel really excited about it, because the progress we've already made is so encouraging:

Every day, in Argentina and other countries in Latin America,...

Sylvia,

I'm Yohanna, SumOfUs's managing director. I don't usually email, but I'm writing to you today because I have an important—but unfortunate—message to share.

I just heard from our finance director, who oversees SumOfUs's budgets, and after closing the books for the month of November, I'm worried.

Last month a technical bug caused a third of all credit card transactions to fail, costing us hundreds of thousands. If we don't catch up fast, we'll have to consider scaling back our campaign plan for the next 6 months. That means the incredibly important annual general meetings of corporations might happen without our voices in the room, and our life-saving community work could have to pause, too.

Would you give a donation now to help us close this gap?

Will you donate $5 to support independent journalism?

Big Tech giants like Google and Meta increasingly control what people see online in their news feeds and search results. We’re counting on readers to help us thrive in this difficult online universe.

Twenty years ago, the internet provided a thrilling new means of communication for voices previously shut out by the established corporate media. Many of The Intercept’s most celebrated journalists began their careers blogging or writing for online startups in those early days of the free and open internet.

But the truth is that it’s never been more difficult for independent journalism online.

Big Tech giants like Google, Meta, and Apple increasingly control what people see online in their news feeds and search results, and too many of the people who run these tech monopolies openly disregard the value of journalism.

The Intercept is organizationally strong, and we’ve never been prouder...
