Taking over Procter & Gamble

Sylvia,
We've been so successful using shareholder action to get companies to change their bad behaviour...that they're trying to shut the whole program down!
After a SumOfUs shareholder resolution helped force Apple to publish its first-ever human rights policy, the US stock regulator made a new rule -- anyone who wants to bring this kind of resolution will need to hold thousands of shares...and companies are setting VERY early deadlines to buy them!
They're trying to silence everyone but the richest shareholders. But Sylvia, we can beat them at their own game.
We already bought shares in giants like Apple, Nestle, and Bayer Monsanto. Now if 5000 people reading this email chip in the cost of a coffee, SumOfUs can buy enough shares in Procter & Gamble to have our say at its AGM, ratcheting up the pressure over rampant deforestation and human rights abuses in its palm oil...

96 elephants killed today

Sylvia,
In the legendary Serengeti, almost a quarter of the elephants live in a tiny area protected by a team of just 10 specially-trained rescue dogs and their handlers.
They sniff out poachers and sound the alarm -- the dogs have helped arrest hundreds of poachers already, saving countless elephants being murdered for ivory. But outside the Serengeti, poaching is on the rise and there are thousands more elephants that still need protection.
That’s why the team behind this amazing project is asking for your help to train more dogs and double the number of sites where these sniffer dogs are working -- and save double the number of elephants, in the Serengeti and beyond.
With 96 of these gentle giants killed each day, every moment counts.

Torturing chickens?

PAOV — “Those that don’t die from the abuse spend their miserable lives trapped with dead birds at their feet.” Global hospitality company Millennium Hotels received praise and profit when they pledged to end the use of small and cruel cages for chickens in their supply chains. However, they are now failing to report on their progress. Open Wing Alliance (OWA) says these chicken cages are so small that birds are unable to move or spread their wings. The chickens suffer fractured bones, deformities, and are often trampled to death. OWA is holding Millennium Hotels accountable to their promises. Sign today to join them.

Last week was powerful

Paov,
Last week was powerful. In case you missed our last email, climate activists in Ottawa, St. John’s and Montreal went undercover as “Ministry of Just Transition” officials and visited the offices of Canada’s biggest oil and gas lobby group to invoice them for the billions in climate damages.
Paov, we are so close to our next milestone of 15,000 signatures for the #TaxBigOil petition calling on Trudeau to make the fossil fuel industry pay for climate chaos and invest in a rapid, just transition to 100% clean energy. Can you help us get to 15,000 signatures? Take one minute to sign the petition now.
As negotiations for the latest UN Climate Conference wrap up in Egypt, we know Canada has once again failed to be a climate leader. The Trudeau government is allowing Big Oil to rake in record profits while everyday people struggle under soaring energy prices and real climate solutions remain badly underfunded.
That’s why, at the end of November, we plan to deliver our mountain of signatures to the steps of Parliament to send a clear and resounding message.

Your place for
news and action Saturday November 19, 2022 Yesterday, as David Eby officially became premier, he was honoured by a traditional blanketing ceremony at the Musqueam community centre. He called it a powerful symbol of reconciliation, and acknowledged this must be backed up by action.
The newly minted Premier Eby also spoke about the need to act on climate change as “the challenge of our time.” He will have a chance to show he's serious about both of these commitments very soon…

Virtual gender affirming care

PAOV — “Virtual gender affirming care is lifesaving.” In Ontario, virtual care for trans and gender diverse people has increased health care access and equity across the province. Virtual care is also a preferred method to access care for many trans and gender diverse people since it is a safe way to connect with competent and inclusive physicians. Despite this, on December 1, Ontario will no longer fund initial telephone visits between new patients and their physician. This means that nearly 2,000 prospective trans and gender diverse patients on waitlists will be unable to access virtual care. Connect-Clinic started this petition calling on the government to protect access to virtual gender affirming care across Ontario so it can continue supporting new patients in need. You can help in this critical moment by adding your signature.

PAOV,
I’d never heard the term 'atmospheric river' before November 2021. I was 4,000 kilometers from home on vacation with my family, huddled around my brother-in-law’s phone watching B.C. flood with water when I learned what it meant.
The images were terrifying, and like most people, we felt helpless to stop it.
My family and I were really lucky on paper. My parents’ basement flooded while we were away, but my aunt and cousin saved old family photo...

Game over for the bees.

Sylvia,
Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide on the planet. Billions of kilograms of the poison have been sprayed across our fields and parks – seeping into our food and our bodies. We haven't even begun to understand the damage it's caused.
But thanks to one family of beekeepers in Germany, we’re one step closer to holding pesticide users responsible.
The Seusing family saw their small honey business decimated after glyphosate was sprayed in a nearby field. Their honeybees carried the contaminated nectar and pollen back to their beehives, forcing them to destroy 4 tons of honey.
Heartbreakingly, the Seusings were forced to shut down their business. So they sued the farmer responsible. And after a two-year legal battle, they won the case this year, setting an important precedent.
Now, the Seusing family will receive compensation for some of the honey contaminated with glyphosate – but it won’t be enough to cover their vast legal fees....

Odelia and Nerissa need your help

PAOV — Odelia and Nerissa have a bail hearing approaching. The sisters from Keeseekoose First Nation in Saskatchewan have spent 30 years imprisoned for a murder someone else confessed to. The sisters have maintained their innocence for those 30 years. In June, Federal Justice Minister David Lametti formally acknowledged that a miscarriage of justice likely occurred in the case and launched a ministerial review. The upcoming bail hearing is a crucial step for the sisters, as it would mean they would be released on bail pending the ministerial review of their case — which can be a lengthy process. You can help Odelia and Nerissa in this critical moment by adding your signature before their hearings.

This is Jim Risen, senior national security correspondent at The Intercept. In 2014, the Obama administration threatened to put me in prison for revealing CIA secrets and refusing to reveal my sources.
So when the Biden Justice Department announced new guidelines that they claimed would protect press freedom, I was interested — and more than a little bit skeptical.
Sadly, my skepticism was justified. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s new press freedom guidelines are shot through with loopholes that could allow prosecutors to go after sources and threaten reporters with jail. If Donald Trump ever returns to power, these new “protections” won’t be worth the paper they’re written on.
I know firsthand that journalism can be a...

Paov,
It’s amazing what you can get away with if you look the part.
Last week I joined a group of undercover climate activists in Ottawa, where we visited the offices of Canada’s biggest oil and gas lobby group. All it took was some formal clothes and a little smooth talking to get our team from the “Ministry of Just Transition” up the elevator to deliver our oversized invoice for the billions in climate damages the fossil fuel industry has caused. The wildest part is the staffer I spoke with agreed to take the invoice.
We had fun with this stunt, but we did it to send a serious message. Canada cannot let Big Oil continue to rake in record profits while everyday people struggle under soaring energy prices and real climate solutions remain badly underfunded. It’s time to #TaxBigOil and invest in a rapid, just transition to 100% clean energy.
