Climate Spotlight: Building the movement for a just transition in Asia

Meet Beatrice, 350's climate organizer in the Philippines. r1

Climate Campaigner Spotlight: Beatrice Tulagan

Hi Paov -

My name is Beatrice, and I'm 350 Asia's Senior Regional Organizer, based in Manila, Philippines. Let me tell you a little bit about my story:

On a rainy January morning in 2016, in a coastal town south of Manila called Tacloban, a city official led me to a field of white crosses. They went as far as I could see, all 2,917 of them. It was only when I came close enough that I saw there were markings on each slab of white wood. They turned out to be names of the dead, scribbled by family members in black marker.

Dogwood News This Week: party crashers

Facebook AV/VR r1 Dogwood Your place for
news and action Saturday December 10, 2022
B.C. ministers, media and the premier himself drove onto the grounds of Government House for the Cabinet swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday under a banner that read “End Fracking Eby”.

As the province’s highest officials stepped off the bus for their photo op, their moment was drowned out by the sound of Dogwood staffer Paige Gorsak on a megaphone, chanting “The climate is heating, the NDP is sleeping.”

The Cabinet swearing-in was a key piece to the premier’s introduction to office. And it was taken over by Frack Free BC and our message to government: end fracking now.

Sylvia,

I'm Yohanna, SumOfUs's managing director. I don't usually email, but I'm writing to you today because I have an important—but unfortunate—message to share.

I just heard from our finance director, who oversees SumOfUs's budgets, and after closing the books for the month of November, I'm worried.

Last month a technical bug caused a third of all credit card transactions to fail, costing us hundreds of thousands. If we don't catch up fast, we'll have to consider scaling back our campaign plan for the next 6 months. That means the incredibly important annual general meetings of corporations might happen without our voices in the room, and our life-saving community work could have to pause, too.

Would you give a donation now to help us close this gap?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately:

Dear Friend,

For 60 years, our work wouldn’t have been possible without supporters like you. We are a small organization tackling big problems.

This year, we celebrated a big win. In our fight to end the inhumane practice of immigration detention across the country - which detains thousands of marginalized migrants and refugee claimants every year in provincial jails - the BC government finally terminated its contract with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) this year. Many provinces have since followed suit to be on the right side of history.

Our work doesn’t stop here. We came this far with strategies and in coalition with organizations and community groups. Will you join us in creating another 60 years of legacy of change?

Paov, thank you for taking action as part of the Tax Big Oil campaign. On Tuesday we dropped off 35,000+ petition signatures at the PM's office. r1

Paov,

On Tuesday we joined Leadnow and Greenpeace in Ottawa to deliver the names of 35,000 people calling on Trudeau to enact an oil and gas Windfall Profits Tax and fund a Just Transition. We were joined outside the Prime Minister’s office by MP Mike Morrice, MP Laurel Collins, and MP Elizabeth May who are committed to continuing the fight for a windfall profits tax in the halls of power.

Paov, can you take two minutes to watch and share this video recapping the action? Here are the links:

Stop Toxic Exports

Hi Sylvia,

Good news from Brussels: the European Commission aims to propose a law next year to stop the export of chemicals already banned in the EU.

I heard that directly from the European Commissioner for Environment last Thursday, when I presented our 213,000-strong petition to him, with a group of other campaigners. Thank you again for signing and sharing the petition!

Photo of EU environment chief standing with group of NGO representatives, holding large petition sign, photographed in the European Commission on 1 December.

But the Environment Commissioner can’t make this law on his own.

We’ll need to push with everything we’ve got for a strong proposal and then a water-tight law, that really forces the industry to change. Companies shouldn’t be allowed to switch to making their banned chemicals abroad – something no doubt they’ll threaten to do, to make politicians lose their nerve.

This can’t be won in a couple of months. It’s going to take years of creative, audacious, and tireless campaigning to win. But what’s the alternative? To let Europe’s corporations continue poisoning the world?

Can you make a regular donation to fund this multi-year #StopToxicExports campaign, and stop...

Beekeeper removing honeycomb from a hive.

Sylvia,

Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide on the planet. Billions of kilograms of the poison have been sprayed across our fields and parks – seeping into our food and our bodies. We haven't even begun to understand the damage it's caused.

But thanks to one family of beekeepers in Germany, we’re one step closer to holding pesticide users responsible.

The Seusing family saw their small honey business decimated after glyphosate was sprayed in a nearby field. Their honeybees carried the contaminated nectar and pollen back to their beehives, forcing them to destroy 4 tons of honey.

Heartbreakingly, the Seusings were forced to shut down their business. So they sued the farmer responsible. And after a two-year legal battle, they won the case this year, setting an important precedent.

Now, the Seusing family will receive compensation for some of the honey contaminated with glyphosate – but it won’t be enough to cover their vast legal fees....

Dear Friend,

This year, the BCCLA turns 60.

That’s 60 years of commitment, 60 years of advocacy, 60 years of fighting for change.

I am proud that in recent years we’ve paid particular attention to the needs of marginalized communities, whose voices are often silenced and unheard. This past year alone, we’ve shown that commitment in our day-to-day work.

We stood in solidarity with crucial voices in the fight for transformative change. We supported sex workers in their fight for a safer sex industry. We urged the Federal government to repeal all mandatory minimum sentences and decriminalize drugs.

We want to do this work as long as necessary to uphold civil liberties and human rights. This holiday season, will you make a year-end donation, so we can continue this important work for years to come?

Our work doesn’t stop here. We are tenacious, creative, and principled. We came this far with strategies and in coalition with organizations...

Elephants walking in your direction

Sylvia,

In the legendary Serengeti, almost a quarter of the elephants live in a tiny area protected by a team of just 10 specially-trained rescue dogs and their handlers.

They sniff out poachers and sound the alarm -- the dogs have helped arrest hundreds of poachers already, saving countless elephants being murdered for ivory. But outside the Serengeti, poaching is on the rise and there are thousands more elephants that still need protection.

That’s why the team behind this amazing project is asking for your help to train more dogs and double the number of sites where these sniffer dogs are working -- and save double the number of elephants, in the Serengeti and beyond.

With 96 of these gentle giants killed each day, every moment counts.

While this happens, thousands of people remain detained and at risk in prison in Iran for showing any signs of support for the protests that are calling for women’s freedom.

Climate Spotlight: Fighting for a Just Transition in Canada

Over the next couple of weeks you’re going to hear from a few of my coworkers about the work 350.org is doing around the world. I thought I’d kick things off by sharing some of the exciting plans the Canada team has for next year. r1

Climate Campaigner Spotlight: Chris Gusen

Hey Paov,

Chris, from 350 Canada, speaking here. Over the next couple of weeks you’re going to hear from a few of my coworkers about the work 350.org is doing around the world. I thought I’d kick things off by reflecting on what we accomplished together in Canada this year and what we’re planning next.

After years of pressure from our climate movement, the Trudeau government is signaling that it will put forward Just Transition legislation early in 2023. We are already preparing for that, and will be ready to push for a bold and ambitious Just Transition Act that matches the scale of the climate crisis and leaves no one behind.

2022 was not shy in showing us the impacts of the climate crisis around here,...
