PAOV — “I can’t afford $600 dollars for a vaccine that I was never given in grade school free.” Human papilloma virus (HPV) can cause cervical, vaginal, and throat cancer, as well as complications to pregnancy and fertility. To protect against HPV, doctors strongly recommend getting HPV vaccines but the only way for women and people with cervices to receive the vaccine for free is in grade school. Those who weren’t vaccinated in school must pay over $500. The high cost is a barrier for many and Gillian is urging the government to make HPV vaccines affordable and accessible for young people in Ontario. You can help by adding your signature.

Your place for
news and action Saturday November 12, 2022
Last week a Wet'suwet'en hereditary chief was threatened with arrest on a public road, along with a lawyer and reporter. A Dogwood staffer was also there and witnessed everything.
They were trying to monitor pipeline construction after a series of environmental violations by Coastal GasLink. What is the company trying to hide?
Dinï Ze' Na'moks planned to walk up a service road on Wet'suwet'en territory. A Coastal GasLink security guard, reading from a script, warned the chief he would be handcuffed if he crossed an arbitrary line on the road, 2 km from construction.
Coastal GasLink has a B.C. court injunction against anyone trying to interfere with construction, but that...

Sylvia,
Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide on the planet. Billions of kilograms of the poison have been sprayed across our fields and parks – seeping into our food and our bodies. We haven't even begun to understand the damage it's caused.
But thanks to one family of beekeepers in Germany, we’re one step closer to holding pesticide users responsible.
The Seusing family saw their small honey business decimated after glyphosate was sprayed in a nearby field. Their honeybees carried the contaminated nectar and pollen back to their beehives, forcing them to destroy 4 tons of honey.
Heartbreakingly, the Seusings were forced to shut down their business. So they sued the farmer responsible. And after a two-year legal battle, they won the case this year, setting an important precedent.
Now, the Seusing family will receive compensation for some of the honey contaminated with glyphosate – but it won’t be enough to cover their vast legal fees....

More than 6500 migrant workers died while constructing the World Cup in Qatar.
Calls are growing on Qatar and FIFA to compensate the workers and their families for the tremendous abuse and exploitation they face.
With the World Cup around the corner and FIFA’s president up for re-election, now’s our chance to demand action.
Sylvia,
More than 6500 migrant workers have lost their lives constructing a $220 billion infrastructure for Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.
FIFA’s president Gianni Infantino, who’s running for re-election as FIFA’s president next year, has been publicly supporting Qatar’s claims that the deaths are normal, despite verified reports of widespread abuse and exploitation.
FIFA’s own human rights policy states it will “provide remedy where individuals have been adversely affected by activities associated with FIFA.”
Let’s hold FIFA accountable to that.
With only a...

Hi Sylvia,
I wanted to share an update about our campaign to stop Facebook, YouTube and TikTok spreading election disinformation ahead of Brazil’s Presidential elections.
Ahead of this hugely important election, SumOfUs exposed how tech companies are letting conspiracy theories, electoral lies and posts inciting violence spread like wildfire on their platforms.
We produced three research reports over the course of 6 weeks to highlight the crisis, and major media outlets, like Time and Washington Post covered our research, piling pressure on Meta, YouTube and TikTok executives to act.

We were also invited to present our research to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court. We showed the court how some of the content on these platforms broke Brazilian electoral law. Thanks to SumOfUs, the court ordered the...

Mass Casualty Commission: Advocating to Enhance Democratic Policing and Protect Marginalized Communities

Dear Friend,
When a man impersonating an RCMP officer killed 22 people in Nova Scotia in April 2020, the RCMP failed to warn Nova Scotians. This failure perplexed and angered the public, becoming one of the most well-known examples of police action (or inaction) in recent memory. People have been demanding answers ever since, wanting to understand whether the state – especially police – could have better protected the communities harmed.
In an effort to unearth some of those answers, the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia created the Mass Casualty Commission, an independent public inquiry currently underway. Due to our shared interest in human rights and police accountability, the BCCLA joined forces with the East Coast Prison Justice Society to participate in this crucial inquiry.

Sylvia,
Didier Thouvenin is a farmer in Vittel, France -- home to one of Nestlé's massive water-guzzling projects.
Together with other whistleblowers, he exposed that Nestlé was illegally dumping huge amounts of plastic and chemical waste, forcing it to admit to creating NINE massive dumping sites.
But instead of cleaning up the mess and apologizing to local residents, Nestlé filed a legal complaint against Didier for trespassing! We know it won’t stop there -- there were 11 other activists with Didier that day and Nestlé is famous for doing everything they can to silence opposition to protect its profits.
Didier just told us he URGENTLY needs to secure a lawyer to fight back. If enough of us chip in, we can create a legal defense fund for Didier and other brave activists standing up to Nestlé... can you help?
If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs,...

Paov,
Right now, climate activists dressed as officials from the “Ministry of Just Transition” are delivering giant invoices to the offices of Canada’s biggest polluters to put them on notice that it’s time to pay for worsening climate disasters. It’s outrageous that while Canadians struggle to afford the basics, Big Oil has more than tripled the profits they're making off our backs.
We know Big Oil won’t pay communities for the loss and damage they have caused by fuelling the climate crisis. But the federal government can make sure they do.
Then take a minute to watch this important message from the Ministry of Just Transition that shows what a Windfall Profits Tax could fund if our government had the spine to imagine big and bold climate action.
Trudeau promised bold climate solutions. That’s why, while Canada’s fossil fuel...
