New name - update!

Take the final survey to help us choose our new name

Dear A,

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the first round of polling to help our community choose a new name. It was so exciting to see the results!

Now it’s time to pick one of the top two choices that the community loved most.

Click below to find out which two names made the cut, and take the final survey to help us choose our new name!

If you missed our first email about this, then you might be wondering why SumOfUs is choosing a new name.

When SumOfUs was founded 11 years ago, we were a small corporate accountability group mostly campaigning in the US. But over the years, we’ve grown to be a 20 million strong community, operating in 7 languages, and making an impact in every corner of the world. Our name has served us tremendously over the years, but isn’t quite right anymore given our evolution.

This year alone, we’ve safeguarded billions...

ODSP has increased - has anything changed?

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Last month, the Ford government increased Ontario Disability Support Program payments (ODSP) by 5%, and celebrated the increase as the largest in a decade. In reality, this increase will amount to a mere $58 more per month. Petition starter Serene says that celebrating a $58 increase while inflation and cost of living continue to skyrocket, feels like a slap in the face to people on ODSP. Join Serene and over 71,000 supporters in demanding Ontario meaningfully increase ODSP rates so people can survive.

Increase ODSP for disabled Ontarians

Whats happening in BC is utterly spooky

Let's make sure Big Oil pays its fair share for climate breakdown r1

Paov,

It is mid-October, and here in BC, where I live, we are still fighting wildfires. Extreme drought conditions have extended the wildfire season, which is nearly five times higher than the average for this time of year.1 The Sunshine Coast has declared a state of emergency as they run out of water, with other parts of BC considering the same.2

These climate disasters are fuelled by Big Oil and our government is letting them get away with it. Instead of getting serious about winding down fossil fuel production in Canada, they’re planning to let these companies extract even more oil and gas, which will only make climate impacts worse. We need our elected leaders to make polluters pay their fair share as we race to prevent climate breakdown. That’s why we’re ramping up pressure on Justin Trudeau and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault to tax Big Oil’s excess profits.

Paov, over 5,000 people across the country have already added their voices. Can you take one minute to sign the petition too and help us send the strongest possible message?

The Biggest, Dumbest Race for the Senate

The No Democracy Party

Email Template r1 PAOV,

Tonight, the BC NDP’s executive council threw Anjali Appadurai out of the leadership race. They didn't even allow her to speak.

In doing so, the party brass revealed their allegiance: not to their members, not to democracy, not to the thousands of British Columbians who flocked to their party to have a say over the crumbling systems that govern our lives – but to the oil and gas companies that are stealing Indigenous lands and taking over our democracy. Michael could be imprisoned for his sexuality

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Michael fled Nigeria (where homosexuality is illegal) because of the risk of death or 14 years imprisonment for his sexuality. He arrived in Canada in 2018 and applied for refugee asylum. His application was denied, and all appeal options have been exhausted. Michael faces deportation within 10 days. He will be forced onto a plane despite the fact that he also has an embolism in his lungs, which could be fatal. Michael has made vital contributions to his community in Canada, working as a Personal Support Working during the pandemic, and volunteering at a food bank. Sign now to help stop Michael’s deportation.

Bee-killers

Pesticides banned for safety and environmental reasons in the EU are still shipped all over the world, killing bees and poisoning communities.

Ask the European Commission to outlaw exports of banned chemicals now!

A,

Tonnes of banned chemicals are made in Europe every day and shipped all over the world. It’s a massive gap in the law that makes billions for companies like Bayer-Monsanto and BASF.

The European Commission committed in October 2020 to “lead by example, and, in line with international commitments, ensure that hazardous chemicals banned in the European Union are not produced for export.”

But two years on, the European Commission still hasn’t proposed a fix. It’s time for an urgent reminder:

Ask EU Commissioner for Environment to get a move on and stop Europe’s deadly exports.

France has outlawed the export and...

Tucker the puppy

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — “Discovering Tucker’s body just a few yards away from our home was devastating.” In late September, petition starter Susan’s 1-year-old puppy Tucker was caught and killed in a snare trap set by neighbours that bordered directly on her heavily treed property line. Now Susan is calling for snare traps to be banned and says: “There are too many tragedies that can occur in these heavily populated subdivisions with so many children, pets and people out enjoying nature.” If you believe better regulations should be put in place before another tragedy happens, sign Susan’s petition now.

Friend --

Thank you so much for your support over the years. While the election outcome is not the result we were hoping for, I know that we will continue working together for the kind of world we believe in. The voters wanted a change. Congratulations to Mayor-Elect Marianne Alto and Victoria’s new City Council. It has been an honour serving you and other members of the public over the past 11 years. I look forward to continuing to work with you and grassroots organizations to build a caring, sustainable community and world – where people get the support they need, and where we look after the natural ecosystems that sustain us all. In solidarity, Ben

Dollar store junk

A,

1 in 4 products tested at Canadian dollar stores are toxic – that’s the latest findings from a report released by our friends at Environmental Defence.

The levels of toxicity are alarming – dollar store headphones tested had 3,000 times the amount of lead allowed according to Canadian law.

And this is no small matter – lead poisoning can cause significant cognitive and developmental delays in young children with high exposures and can create risks of high blood pressure and kidney damage in adults.

Canadian law leaves huge loopholes for stores such as Dollarama and Dollar Tree to continue selling these products, but our government can stop this with a stroke of a pen.

Will you...

PBI mobilizes for COP27 summit

PBI mobilizes for COP27 summit r1 Peace Brigades International-Canada Peace Brigades International-Canada Making Space for Peace

More than 1,200 land and environmental defenders have been killed since the United Nations COP21 climate summit took place in Paris in December 2015.

One of those killed was Indigenous Lenca water protector Berta Caceres in Honduras. After her murder, Peace Brigades International began accompanying the organization she co-founded, the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH).

The UN Human Rights Council has affirmed that environmental human rights defenders “must be ensured a safe and enabling environment to undertake their work” given “their important role in supporting States to fulfil their obligations under the Paris Agreement” reached in 2015.

And yet the threats, attacks, criminalization, judicialization and killings continue.

We will be helping to bring together PBI accompanied environmental defenders for a webinar next month during the COP27 summit.

We feel it’s important that their voices be heard.

Looks...
