70 percent of Republicans believe the election was stolen

Conspiracy theories gain traction not so much because people are suckers but because they are mad — and they have every right to be. But we will not defeat surging fascism with more of the same warmed-over neoliberalism.

70 percent of Republicans doubt the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s election.

In recent days, right-wingers have been spreading doctored photos alleging the late Queen Elizabeth II once secretly knighted Donald Trump. Or claiming the queen had information that could lead to Hillary Clinton’s arrest.

Last week, Trump openly embraced QAnon for the first time. He wore a lapel pin reading “The Storm is Coming,” a reference to QAnon lore about Trump’s final victory, when he will be reinstated to power and his opponents will be tried and possibly executed on live TV.

Conspiracy theories like these are everywhere, fueled by a fake populist right-wing...

Dogwood News This Week: what happened to the BC NDP?

Email Template r1 Dogwood Your place for news and action Hurricanes, floods, fires and drought are killing people, and destroying communities in B.C. and around the world.

Scientists and diplomats are begging rich, fossil-fuel extracting countries to stop making the situation worse. But that’s exactly what the B.C. government is doing.

The province has approved not one but four major gas export pipelines. We still give subsidies to foreign oil companies and rebates for gas appliances here at home. The industry...

Snow-capped mountains of Santa Marta, Colombia

A,

There’s an incredible place in Colombia where you can find snow-capped mountains, prehistoric rainforests, and crystal clear rivers that run right into the Caribbean Sea! And this week we can help buy and protect it...forever.

The Indigenous communities of Sierra Nevada de Santa Maria have lived on this land for centuries, but it’s now under critical threat from mining, tourism, and urbanization.

Our partner, Rainforest Trust, is working hand-in-hand with them to have their Indigenous-owned land added to a National Park, giving it the highest protection possible under Colombian law. But to do it the government says they also need to buy more than a thousand acres of adjoining forest -- and for that, they need our help!

Last year we helped buy and protect a critical ecosystem in Indonesia…now we can do it in Colombia.

If 5000 of us chip in the cost of a cup of coffee in the next 24 hours, Rainforest Trust has donors offering a 2x match on...

The statistic that keeps us awake at night

Millions of people read The Intercept’s groundbreaking investigative journalism. But just 1 percent ever donate. That’s a problem.

Millions of people read The Intercept’s groundbreaking investigative journalism. Many of them come back again and again to read our latest blockbuster scoop.

And yet only 1 percent of our readers ever make a donation, and that’s a problem.

It means we have fewer resources to pursue the award-winning investigative journalism for which we’re known. Fewer reporters to chase down leads. Fewer researchers to dig through the enormous amounts of data leaked to us by whistleblowers.

But it also means we have to ask for money a lot more often.

Just think: If 10 percent of our readers donated just $10 or $20 right now, we would be done fundraising for the entire rest of the year. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

We know that many...

Continue our legacy with us

This is a test r1

Hi Friend,

This year is the BCCLA’s 60th anniversary! We’ve been taking action on inequalities and fighting injustice for decades.

Through your support, we've litigated in the highest courts, made submissions to top policy makers, and ensured our public legal educational opportunities are accessible to those who need them most.

Here are a few highlights below:

Looking back, we’ve come a long way defending and promoting justice, equality, and freedom for all. Despite our many victories, there’s much more work to be done and this work comes at a critical time. This fall, will you become a BCCLA member to help us continue our fight for another 60 years?

This could be the worst hurricane in Canadian history

As I write this, Hurricane Fiona, the storm that just left millions in Puerto Rico and the Dominican without power, is headed directly for Nova Scotia. r1

Paov,

My blood is boiling. A federal investigation in the US just forced Shell, Chevron, BP and ExxonMobil to hand over a trove of emails and internal documents that shed new light on just how cynical these oil giants really are.

In the emails, oil and gas executives admit that net zero has nothing to do with their business models, acknowledge they’re gaslighting the public, and even joke about hoping youth climate activists get infested with bedbugs.1 The explosive documents prove that, despite promising to “go green” decades ago, Big Oil is still obsessed with securing a long-term future for fossil fuels.

It’s clear that these companies will go to any length to protect their bottom line, even if it means unleashing more climate chaos on the rest of us. That’s why our movements are calling on political leaders across Canada to stop appeasing corporate lobbyists and finally take the transformative climate action we need.

Paov, Parliament is back in session this week. Let’s make sure our representatives know they’re supposed to work for us –...

Were falling behind at a terrible moment

With crucial midterm elections approaching, donations so far are lagging behind the pace we need to hit our fundraising goals this month.

The largest newspaper chain in the U.S. just announced the latest wave of newsroom layoffs in an industry that’s been hammered over the last decade.

Gannett had already slashed newsroom jobs by almost 20 percent since November 2020, and at least another 80 journalists were laid off just last month. It’s devastating news, not only for Gannett and the newspaper industry but also for democracy.

But the harsh reality is that quality journalism simply isn’t profitable, and it never has been. It has always required a subsidy from other sources of revenue, whether that’s from advertisements or — like The Intercept — reader donations.

The Intercept is not immune to the market pressures that have caused job losses at other...

it's making big corporations rich

Email Template r1 PAOV,

Last year, my three-year-old son smashed my cell phone — not a surprising thing to have happen, to be honest. Phones are made of glass and kids are, well, kids. The screen was in pieces and the speaker wouldn’t work, which left me with two options: fix it or buy a new phone.

I quickly discovered that doing the fix myself would void my warranty, so I took it to a repair shop. They quoted me more...

If you donate right now, we won’t send you any more fundraising emails for the rest of the campaign.

Let’s be honest. Fundraising emails can be annoying. We don’t like sending them, and you probably don’t like getting them.

But as a nonprofit news outlet, The Intercept relies on member donations, and we just kicked off our September membership campaign with a goal of raising $500,000 by the end of the month.

You know what that means. Over the next week or so, we’re going to be sending out quite a few emails — and that could get pretty irritating.

So today, before we really get going, we wanted to offer you a chance to avoid all those pesky reminders.

If you donate to The Intercept right now, you won’t get any more fundraising emails for the rest of...

14 terabytes of hacked Russian government data

We’re digging through a gold mine of data from Russian federal government agencies, state-owned media, law firms, and the world’s largest pipeline company.

The Intercept is indexing a massive trove of data hacked from the Russian government following the invasion of Ukraine — a gold mine that could contain countless revelations about the inner workings of President Vladimir Putin’s regime.

These files include 14 terabytes of data from Russian federal government agencies, state-owned media, law firms, and the world’s largest pipeline company. The minute we got our hands on it, we knew that we had something truly remarkable.

Digging through these files to reveal the hidden stories within them is a giant and costly undertaking. And while The Intercept has years of data and security expertise that makes projects like this possible, our technology costs have skyrocketed — server bills alone have...
