Your place for news and action
There is no better time for climate leadership than right now. We’re reminded of this everyday as deadly floods, droughts and wildfires ravage all four corners of Earth.
Here at home, we need a leader who isn’t afraid to do hard things. Take bold action. And be a forward-thinker. If we get stuck with the status quo, we’re cooked.
Choosing the next premier is not a silver bullet solution to climate...
"Historic and catastrophic" massacre of Yellowstones wolves

The gray wolf is among the most majestic and mysterious animals in the American West, and its successful reintroduction to Yellowstone National Park and recovery is one of the greatest conservation success stories of the last century.
When then-President Donald Trump’s “guy” in Montana — far-right former Rep. Greg Gianforte — became governor in 2020, the regulations controlling the killing of wolves in the state were almost completely erased. Since then, we’ve seen the bloodiest wolf hunt in more than 100 years.
In one season, roughly one out of every five wolves in Yellowstone was killed. One entire pack — the Phantom Lake pack — was completely wiped out. One wildlife biologist with more than 24 years of experience at Yellowstone called...

Dear friends,
The Saudi Arabian government has just sentenced a young mother of two to 34 years in prison.
Her crime? Tweeting support for reform and the freedom of detained activists.
Now Salma Al-Shehab could spend the next 3 decades in prison for these tweets — but we have a chance to help her.
In two weeks Saudi will host the Global AI Summit, and dozens of prominent technologists and investors will be speaking at the event. If they join our call for Salma’s release and threaten to boycott the event, it could force the kingdom to rethink this outrageous ruling against Salma.
Tell speakers of the AI Summit: Free Salma or boycott the event
Salma, a dental hygienist and a PhD student living in the UK, was arrested in Saudi Arabia last year while on holiday. She was placed in solitary confinement for 285...

Pakistan is drowning. We need to act now.

Paov,
Over the past two weeks, Pakistan has experienced cataclysmic floods triggered by climate-fuelled monsoons and glacial melting. Thousands have lost their lives and at least 33 million people have been displaced, costing billions of dollars in damage and upending people's lives1.
You can connect the dots. We’re seeing absolute devastation in Pakistan, summer after summer of dangerous heat and extreme fires in Canada, and countless other climate impacts. And, we’re still seeing Big Oil and their political accomplices continue to block and delay climate action.
It’s time we change direction. In Canada, that starts with capping fossil fuel production, not just emissions, and investing in a Just Transition that supports people and the planet as we race to build a clean energy future.
Paov, the climate-fuelled devastation unfolding in Pakistan is beyond heartbreaking. Countries in the Global South, that have contributed the least to the climate crisis, are drowning while Big Oil rakes in billions...

Bayer in court

A,
Our beekeeper friends are fighting Bayer in court to defend our right to protest its toxic pesticides.
Their case has made it all the way to the highest court: they're one step away from finally defeating Bayer. But they’re also running out of money fast.
They’re asking for our help – and the stakes couldn’t be higher. If Bayer wins, it could call the police and shut down peaceful protests any time we try to publicly speak out at its shareholder meetings. Other corporations could follow suit and also shut us down.
But it's not over yet – and with your help, Bayer could still lose.
If you chip in $88, we can help these beekeepers fight to defeat Bayer in court. A, can we count on you to help?

PAOV,
It took about two minutes for me to give my family the rundown on what’s going on with the BC NDP leadership race this fall. I did it while we were sitting around the table at our weekly Sunday Night Dinner.
I don’t usually talk to my family about politics — none of them are all that interested. Some of them don’t even vote. But the leadership race is different. And as I told them about the opportunity...

Factory farming octopus

PAOV — Several countries have plans to begin commercial octopus farming within the next year. Farming carnivorous animals like octopuses places even more strain on the oceans because it means taking another species out of the ocean to feed them. There is also no reliably humane way to slaughter octopuses on a commercial scale. Petition starter Karina is asking the government to ban commercial octopus farms in Canada, as well as the import of farmed octopus, so octopuses aren’t raised to simply die a painful death. If you agree with Karina, sign the petition now.

We helped put on a side event during the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Geneva. At the event four expert panelists discussed the law that Canada passed last year, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
The Act began a process of implementing the Indigenous human rights expressed within the UN Declaration. Find out how these experts think Canada is doing with this implementation, and what still needs to happen: https://youtu.be/6Foz-3WUqjc

In 2019, Sean Kealiher, a 23-year-old antifascist protester in Portland, Oregon, was run down by a car following an argument outside a bar. As Kealiher bled on the sidewalk, the driver and passengers abandoned the vehicle and left on foot.
Surveillance cameras captured much of the incident, and Kealiher’s mother thought his killing would be an easy case to solve. But for more than two years, police made no arrests. Local activists believed that the department intentionally neglected the investigation due to the victim’s political leanings.
Then The Intercept sued the city of Portland to gain access to police records on the unsolved murder. Shortly after an important motion in our case, police confronted a suspect, who admitted...

Take two minutes to strengthen climate policy

Paov,
One of Trudeau’s big climate promises last election was to put a cap on how much pollution the oil and gas sector can emit. Almost a year later, the federal government is asking for public feedback on the emissions cap.
Canada’s fossil fuel CEOs have been quick to call the Liberals’ proposal "overly ambitious" but we know in reality it doesn’t go nearly far enough. Scientists have been clear that we have to keep most known oil, gas and coal reserves in the ground to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.1 That means capping fossil fuel production, not just emissions, and investing in a Just Transition that supports workers as we race to build a clean energy future.

PAOV — An active bald eagle nest, home to a breeding pair and their eaglets, is being put at risk by a luxury home development in British Columbia. Developers plan to “cone” the nest this fall, which will cover the nest and force the eagles to abandon it. Eagles mate for life and return to their nests each year. A local advocacy group is urging the government to protect the eagles by rejecting the developer’s application to build in the area. If you think that the nest should be protected, sign the petition now.

Your place for news and action
A climate leader could be premier before Christmas this year, with two years to govern before the next general election. I’m sure that worries oil and gas CEOs, and the senior bureaucrats and party mandarins who have enabled their takeover of B.C. But for those who believe in public control of our government, it’s an extraordinary opportunity.
Like primary voters in the U.S., the BC NDP party’s leadership race will play an outsized...
