PAOV — Earlier this week, Bell Media announced that Lisa LaFlamme, Chief News Anchor for CTV News, would be replaced, in a move that’s being called ageist and sexist. LaFlamme had been with CTV News for 35 years, and has stated that it was not her choice or decision to leave the network. Petition starter Miles is urging Bell Media to reconsider their decision and bring LaFlamme back to CTV News. Show your support by signing the petition now.

Solar Lights
- Details

A,
Nearly 800 million people worldwide live without electricity. It’s a silent killer – the deadly fumes inhaled from kerosene lamps are equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day.
The crisis is especially acute in Northern Uganda, where 99% of the population can’t access the national grid and more children die from respiratory illness than anything else.
But there’s a proven, simple solution: solar lights.
An amazing organisation called Solar Links works with community-led groups to install solar lighting in rural households in Uganda – and they’re racing to get these lights in more than 500 homes before skyrocketing food and kerosene costs drive them further into darkness.
They won’t start installing until they raise enough funds to light every home in the village so no one is left out – and together we can make it happen quickly, with no red tape.
Each light costs just $20 – can you chip in today so we can transform an entire...

PAOV — Residents of a small Ontario community are fighting back against a developer’s planned expansion of the local golf course. The developer has requested the local council endorse their application for a provincial Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO) - which allows the provincial government to override local planning authorities with minimal expert or public consultation. The Thunder Beach Alliance is urging their council to reject the request to endorse the MZO. Show your support by signing the petition now.

Oreo maker Mondelēz is getting filthy rich while impoverishing entire communities in Indonesia.
Tell the candy giant to stop buying dirty palm oil NOW.
A,
Oreo cookies, Cadbury Cream eggs and Milka chocolate are making Mondelēz rich while impoverishing entire communities in Indonesia as they are not only filled with bulldozed rainforests but also double-stuffed with broken promises!
Mondelēz, one of the world’s biggest snack food companies, is sourcing palm oil from bad players who’ve taken away Indigenous lands for their plantations but never delivered on the promised share in the billion dollar palm oil business. Thousands of families were hoping to have a steady income and send their kids to school...
With legal costs skyrocketing, can you chip in $5?

Last year, a billionaire defense contractor sued The Intercept, claiming defamation. Our lawyers don’t want us to comment on the ongoing litigation, except to say that we stand by our reporting — and that the resulting legal bills have been eye-popping.
Meanwhile, our reporters are increasingly finding it necessary to go to court to enforce freedom of information laws and get access to public records.
This often drags on for years: For example, we first filed suit in November 2020 to obtain documents about the draconian security measures employed against protests to the Dakota Access pipeline — and despite multiple rulings in our favor, we have yet to receive a single page through the lawsuit.
We never want anyone in our newsroom...

Zelenskys veto

Ukraine’s ruling party is taking a sledgehammer to workers rights, just when workers and families are already suffering terribly because of Putin’s war.
Ask President Zelensky to veto the bill, “draft law 5371”.
A,
Ukrainian trade unions successfully beat back attempts to slash labour protections in 2020 and 2021. But last month – with the country under martial law because of Russia's invasion – MPs voted for a bill that strips protections from millions of workers.
The Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine is now asking President Zelensky to veto the bill.
It’s called the “draft law 5371”, and President Zelensky will be asked to sign it soon. If he signs, then Ukraine’s national labour law will no longer apply to small- and medium-sized enterprises where most people work. It’s a profits-over-people bill and a recipe for every kind of labour rights abuse!
Ask President Zelensky to veto the profits-over-people bill.
According to OpenDemocracy, the bill was...

PAOV — The “Champ des Monarques” is an essential habitat for endangered species like the monarch butterfly, located on federally-owned land near the Trudeau Airport in Montreal. Recently, thousands of milkweed shoots — a critical plant for the survival of monarch caterpillars — were razed. Petition starter AnneClaude is urging the government to take action to ensure that the land is better protected for its resident endangered species. Rogers Outage

The great Rogers outage was caused by the lack of telecom competition in Canada. Canadians paying the highest cell phone bill in the world? Also because of the big 3 monopoly.
Call on the Federal government to break up the Rogers, Bell, Telus telecom stranglehold now.
A,
This summer, Rogers left millions of Canadians without cellphone service, internet, ability to use debit cards, and call 911.
The outage is a direct result of Rogers being one of three companies that have a monopoly over our telecommunications service.
And that’s not all – year after year, Canadians pay more for their wireless bill than every other country in the world. The cause: there is no competition within the monopoly of Rogers, Bell, and Telus to drive the prices down for consumers.
This is why we need the Federal government to break up the Big 3 telecoms monopoly.
Call on the Minister of Industry to bust the Rogers, Bell,...

The terrain of our battle to stop the climate crisis is rapidly shifting. We’d like to invite you to take stock with us of where we are, what we’ve achieved, and most importantly – where we’re going next.
Join us and activists from around the world for the Climate Justice Conversations series, online sessions happening on September 1 and 2 where you’ll listen, share, and connect with leaders from our movement.
We’ll be hosting three sessions (each one will be run twice, in different timezones), that cover the state of our movement, how we sustain our activism in the long run and stay resilient, and organizing after climate impacts.
If you’re feeling disconnected after the pandemic, if you’re gearing up for the September climate strikes and looking for inspiration, if you’re looking for frontline fights to support during COP27 at the end of this year –...

Your place for news and action
By now it should be obvious that corporations are taking over our democracy. Over and over we’ve seen politicians elected on bold promises to rein in corporate power – for example, halting oil and gas expansion. What happens? They are bullied, silenced, bought off or brainwashed by lobbyists … and the status quo marches on.
There are two ways to counter this. One is to work completely outside of B.C.’s colonial political and legal...

A,
They’re calling it a "heat apocalypse" – Europe is literally melting, with roads and runways turning into warped globs of sticky, hot tar. The UK just suffered through its hottest day in history. Arctic permafrost is melting 43x faster than before.
This is not normal. Climate change is destroying our planet already – and yet somehow keeps accelerating.
But the worst offenders behind it – a rotten, predatory financial sector that has poured an unbelievable $4.6 trillion into fossil fuels since the Paris agreement – are flying completely under the radar.
We’re going to change that.
SumOfUs has a plan to build a crack team of campaigners and investigators to expose the financial industry’s responsibility for this emergency, then run massive campaigns in the media and with shareholders to force them to change. We’ll shine the spotlight on these giants like never before. It could be a turning point for the planet, but we can’t do it without your...

A,
Over the last week an astonishing 59,000 SumOfUs members across the world have taken action to protect seals from Australia's salmon industry. But we're still short of our 100,000 signature goal.
Will you add your name A and help protect wild fur seals?
Tasmania's salmon producers have already responded to SumOfUs members saying: "we use industry-leading pen infrastructure and nets aim to protect seals".
But if the pens and nets used by salmon producers are the best in the industry why are they still shooting seals and detonating underwater seal crackers?
After public outcry, salmon companies in Scotland stopped using seal crackers. But in Australia these devices are still in use and the consequences for seals are bone injuries, soft tissue burns, prolapsed eye balls and in some cases death, often from blunt force trauma.

If 40,000 more SumOfUs members like you join the campaign A, we will deliver the petition directly...

PAOV — Canadians pay some of the highest internet and phone service fees in the world, and telecom companies regularly report hundreds of millions of dollars in profit. Despite this, Telus has submitted an application with the CRTC to charge a 1.5% credit card processing fee on all customer bill payments. Petition starter Nicole is urging the CRTC to take immediate and strong action to bring more competition into Canada’s internet and phone markets so Canadians are better protected from skyrocketing fees.
