David Eby Knows Better

Dear Friend,
Last week BC Attorney General David Eby threw human rights, civil liberties, and evidence under the bus in an attempt to score political points during his leadership campaign. Minister Eby suggested that the state should be able to involuntarily detain and force treatment on people who use drugs who have experienced multiple overdoses. The fact is David Eby knows better.
Read our latest Commentary: David Eby Knows Better.
As a lawyer and former advocate for rights and liberties, Minister Eby knows that such a law would likely violate Charter rights. He also knows that just this Spring, his government abandoned a similar proposal to involuntarily treat youth because of “the trauma associated with holding youth against their will, especially Indigenous youth.”
Health experts know that the evidence does not support Eby’s risky proposal; all evidence is clear that involuntary drug treatment can cause harm – even death - and does not save lives.
Minister Eby said...

Whos spending all this money to defeat progressives?

Conservative “pro-Israel” groups including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and Democratic Majority for Israel are suddenly spending millions to defeat progressive candidates in Democratic primaries this cycle.
Backed by billionaire donors, these groups aim to silence insurgent members of Congress who have broken with the deadly bipartisan consensus on U.S. support for the Israeli occupation.
And they’re winning. AIPAC, which also endorsed 37 Republican election deniers, successfully spent nearly $4 million through its super PAC to defeat Michigan Rep. Andy Levin, the most progressive Jewish member of Congress.
The groups also rescued anti-abortion Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar and ensured the defeat of Nina Turner, the former co-chair of the 2020 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign.

For profit health care??

Ontario’s public health care is under attack! The Ford government is considering selling off parts of the health service to greedy for-profit companies. He wants to turn us into the US. Add your name and tell them: hands off our health care!
A,
Premier Doug Ford wants to let predatory private companies buy up parts of Ontario’s health services. This would be a disaster for patients, with the elderly and most vulnerable hit the hardest.
And unless we speak up now, he’ll push ahead – and set a precedent that could eventually destroy Canada’s public health care system.
Greedy for-profit companies can’t wait. Privatizing Canadian health care is their dream come true. But we don’t want to become the US, where getting sick can mean going bankrupt. We have to let Ford and other provincial leaders know that selling off our health care is incredibly unpopular – and could end their political careers.

3 ways to help a climate champion become Premier of BC

Hi Paov,
Anjai Appadurai has been a leader in the fight for climate justice for well over a decade. Now, she’s running to be the leader of the BCNDP, and BC’s next Premier.
If she wins against David Eby, she’d be Premier for the next two years, giving her the opportunity to shake up climate politics in this country in a big way.
The most exciting part is that this isn’t a long shot campaign. It’s absolutely winnable — as long as people like you and me get involved. You don't have to live in BC to help out either.
Here are 3 ways you can get involved right now:
-
Join Dogwood BC’s phone banking efforts
Last week we shared that our friends at Dogwood BC are hosting daily phone banks for Anjali. They want to call thousands of BC residents to urge them to join the BCNDP so they can vote for Anjali as the next party leader.
We want to see how many people we can turn out...Read more: 3 ways to help a climate champion become Premier of BC

PAOV — There is an ancient forest near Duncan Lake in the Kootenays that is home to trees over 1,000 years old, and at least one tree that is estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Logging and road building is planned nearby, putting the entire area and its resident wildlife at risk. The BC government is being urged to create a new provincial park at Duncan Lake to permanently protect the old-growth trees — if you agree, add your name.

34,728 have signed Duncan River’s petition. Let’s get...

The UN says Trans Mountain Pipeline does not have consent from affected Indigenous communities and has called for a stop in construction.
Message Liberty Mutual, AIG, and Lloyd's of London to publicly rule out insuring Trans Mountain now.
A,
The UN has told Canada to halt the Trans Mountain Pipeline until it gets consent from affected Indigenous communities.
If this pipeline connects the Canadian tar sands with the Pacific Ocean and if expanded, it will lead to climate disaster. It's also a reckless project that would increase oil tanker traffic sevenfold, endangering the already struggling Orca whale population.
This pipeline is a terrible idea so why are companies such as Liberty Mutual backing this project? Perhaps because the board member of Liberty Mutual directly is also a director at one of the biggest tar sands companies in Canada and directly profits from the project.
Liberty Mutual, Lloyd’s of London insurers, and AIG’s insurance contract on the risky Trans Mountain Pipeline is...

Ukraine's government is urging banks -- for peace's sake -- to cut ties with corporations that trade Russian oil.
Add your voice to that call, so bankers stop funding Putin's war.
A,
Putin’s bloody invasion of Ukraine is grinding on to its sixth month, and a handful of western banks are still supporting Russia’s fossil fuel sector.
Banks including Citi, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase, and Crédit Agricole are propping up Russian oil and gas producers and traders, prolonging Putin’s war.
But Ukrainian peace and climate activists, and even an advisor to the Ukrainian president, are naming and shaming the banks for their crimes. As we approach the war’s six months mark, a massive public outcry could help change the bankers’ calculus.
Tell Citi, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase, and Crédit Agricole to exit Russia’s fossil fuel sector.
In July, Ukraine’s government wrote to the bosses of...

Dear Friend,
One month ago, the province of British Columbia announced that it would be ending its immigration detention agreement with Canada Border Services Agency (CSBA).
I had the privilege of speaking at our press conference where people with lived experience in immigration detention joined advocates and experts to speak about this historic decision. The province’s announcement provides 12 months’ notice for CBSA to end its agreement that currently allows for migrants and refugee claimants to be incarcerated on purely administrative grounds in provincial jails.
Though the decision is a significant human rights victory, I spoke about how we see only a first step:
“It is our hope that B.C. will set an example for the rest of the country and that each province will terminate its agreement with the CBSA, in turn increasing pressure on our federal government to abolish immigration detention altogether.”
The...

Last year, a billionaire defense contractor sued The Intercept, claiming defamation. We stand by our reporting — but the resulting legal bills have been eye-popping.
Meanwhile, our reporters are increasingly finding it necessary to go to court to enforce freedom of information laws and get access to public records.
This often drags on for years: For example, we first filed suit in November 2020 to obtain documents about the draconian security measures employed against protests to the Dakota Access pipeline — and despite multiple rulings in our favor, we have yet to receive a single page through the lawsuit.
We never want anyone in our newsroom to be bullied off an important story for fear that it could set off expensive litigation...

Your place for news and action
When dead salmon started turning up along the edge of the Coquihalla River, locals took notice. It was happening right next to a Trans Mountain construction site. Coincidence?
After public outcry over the dead fish, the company released a statement saying their work there is finished. Basically, nothing to see here!
So why are Trans Mountain excavators still digging in the spot they claimed was no longer an active work site?

A,
Nearly 800 million people worldwide live without electricity. It’s a silent killer – the deadly fumes inhaled from kerosene lamps are equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day.
The crisis is especially acute in Northern Uganda, where 99% of the population can’t access the national grid and more children die from respiratory illness than anything else.
But there’s a proven, simple solution: solar lights.
An amazing organisation called Solar Links works with community-led groups to install solar lighting in rural households in Uganda – and they’re racing to get these lights in more than 500 homes before skyrocketing food and kerosene costs drive them further into darkness.
They won’t start installing until they raise enough funds to light every home in the village so no one is left out – and together we can make it happen quickly, with no red tape.
Each light costs just $20 – can you chip in today so we can transform an entire...

Paov,
Normally, we wouldn’t email you about a provincial political party’s leadership race. We typically focus on federal politics and avoid internal party fights, but right now, the BCNDP leadership race presents an unprecedented opportunity to change climate politics in this country.

Last week, longtime climate activist Anjali Appadurai announced that she is running to replace John Horgan as leader of the BCNDP. You might remember Anjali from her run to represent Vancouver Granville in the last federal election, a race she narrowly lost. Or, you might know her from her years of tireless climate organizing in BC, across Canada and around the world.
I’ve known Anjali for over a decade now. We’ve worked together at United Nations climate negotiations, on domestic policy campaigns in Canada and organizing against dangerous fossil fuel expansion. Through all this, I can confidently say, there are few people more dedicated to climate justice than Anjali. Her entering this race has the potential to upend the political status quo in BC and Canada more broadly, and help our movement make real progress towards a just and livable future...
