PAOV — Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases are surging. RSV can be severe and even deadly to vulnerable people, especially babies. Dr Anna Banerji has led extensive research showing that Inuit babies in Nunavut are among the highest risk and most vulnerable. However, their parents are not offered the preventative, life-saving medication that other high-risk babies in Canada are given. This medication could save Inuit babies from becoming very sick and being medevaced for emergency treatment. Dr Banerji started a petition to make RSV medication available to all Inuit babies. Will you join her in calling for health equity for all babies?

PBI is present on-the-ground now

Photo of the week by PBI-Guatemala.
At any given moment, PBI has 55+ volunteers in the field accompanying at-risk human rights defenders who are on the frontlines of crucial social justice struggles in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
Last year, our field teams carried out 984 physical accompaniments of defenders at protests and marches, media conferences, court hearings, observation missions, meetings and ceremonies.
These volunteers commit to at least one year in the field, speak fluent Spanish, live in communal houses, and can experience intense situations.
Right now, PBI is seeking field volunteers for our teams in Mexico (the deadline to apply is November 11) and Colombia (deadline November 27).

A,
We've been so successful using shareholder action to get companies to change their bad behaviour...that they're trying to shut the whole program down!
After a SumOfUs shareholder resolution helped force Apple to publish its first-ever human rights policy, the US stock regulator made a new rule -- anyone who wants to bring this kind of resolution will need to hold thousands of shares...and companies are setting VERY early deadlines to buy them!
They're trying to silence everyone but the richest shareholders. But A, we can beat them at their own game.
We already bought shares in giants like Apple, Nestle, and Bayer Monsanto. Now if 5000 people reading this email chip in the cost of a coffee, SumOfUs can buy enough shares in Procter & Gamble to have our say at its AGM, ratcheting up the pressure over rampant deforestation and human rights abuses in its palm oil supply chain -- they just got an "F"...

PAOV — Lauri’s son has a rare form of cancer but his treatment isn’t covered. The reason? He is too young. Because of a gap in coverage, each infusion of the immunotherapy drug — which is free for Ontarians over 60 — costs Lauri’s son $8,800. If you agree that immunotherapy medication should be covered for everyone who needs it regardless of their age, add your name to Lauri’s petition.

Earlier this year, 14 terabytes of data and documents from more than 50 Russian government agencies and corporations were hacked and released to the public.
As soon as we got our hands on these files, we went to work, searching for the revelations about President Vladimir Putin’s regime that could be contained in the hacks.
What we’ve found has been damning. Emails and documents uncovered by The Intercept show how one of Putin’s closest allies worked to hide his control of a notorious mercenary group fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine.
But this reporting, pulling back the curtain on one of the most ruthless figures in Putin’s...

Canada needs to Tax Big Oil

Paov,
The next big global climate summit is just over a week away and UN scientists are sounding the alarm that countries need to make faster, deeper emissions cuts to prevent catastrophe.1 Naturally, the fossil fuel industry and their allies are pulling out all the stops to make sure Canada doesn’t answer the call.
Last week, Trudeau insisted once again that growing oil and gas production isn’t at odds with his emissions reduction targets.2 The Globe and Mail editorial board followed up the next day with an op-ed titled "What if Canada could have a bigger oil and gas industry, and lower emissions? It’s possible."3 (Spoiler: It isn’t). And the industry itself is trying desperately to greenwash their image with a slick new PR campaign.4
You and I can see through the spin, but the problem is many Canadians still believe Big Oil's lies. That’s why we’re so glad to see how many new people...

We assessed the Maya Train project… and, as expected - it does not look good: the Maya Train is not respecting basic Indigenous and Environmental rights.
And four European companies are benefiting from these rights violations! Will you help us name and shame them?

Communities are resisting the Maya Train project in Southern Mexico, and they need our support. European companies must end their neocolonial practices in the Global South, continuing to operate with no consent on Indigenous land, rip communities apart and more and more land destruction!
We need your help to raise awareness and shame these companies for making money off human rights violations!
Show how the Maya Train is failing on all fronts!

PAOV — Canadians pay some of the highest internet and phone service fees in the world, and telecom companies regularly report hundreds of millions of dollars in profit. Despite this, Telus has submitted an application with the CRTC to charge a 1.5% credit card processing fee on all customer bill payments. Petition starter Nicole is urging the CRTC to take immediate and strong action to bring more competition into Canada’s internet and phone markets so Canadians are better protected from skyrocketing fees. It appears the BC NDP will stop at nothing to avoid having a real discussion about oil and gas expansion. Which is understandable if your party is controlled by corporate lobbyists, rather than its grassroots members.
If Anjali Appadurai had been allowed to run against the party’s favoured candidate, David Eby, tackling fracked gas, Indigenous rights and a real climate plan would have all been on the table. Now? The fossil fuel industry...

Rodney Reed is a Black man on death row in Texas.
And if you believe him and dozens of witnesses who have come forward to corroborate his story, his only crime was having an affair with the white fiancee of a white police officer.
Reed was convicted of raping and murdering a 19-year-old woman who was engaged to a police officer. But after Reed’s conviction, the police officer was convicted of kidnapping and assaulting a woman at gunpoint — and a man incarcerated with him came forward to allege that the officer confessed to killing his fiancee.
Texas is so hellbent on seeing Reed executed that they’re refusing to conduct...

A new report published by an environmental group indicates that the Trudeau government, which is kept in power with the support of the NDP, continued to provide billions of dollars in public subsidies to the fossil fuel sector this year.
“Canada continues to fuel climate disaster by providing billions to oil and gas companies - $15.6 billion and counting in 2022,” said Julia Levin, national climate program manager for Environmental Defence Canada, which published the report.
“It’s long past time for Canada to keep its promise to stop funding fossil fuels,” Levin continued. “Eliminating public financing for fossil fuels will free up billions of dollars to support climate solutions - that’s how Canada will thrive as the world moves beyond oil and gas.”
Canada is not only continuing to subsidize oil...
