Alternative News

Articles from non-mainstream as opposed to corporate for profit sources.

I want to share a personal message about why I work for The Intercept and humbly ask for your $5 donation before December 31.

Without our newsroom, I have no idea where I’d go to report stories that unsettle establishment narratives and challenge conventional wisdom.

I’ve been a political reporter for almost 20 years. Before I became D.C. bureau chief for The Intercept, I worked at for-profit outlets like Politico and the Huffington Post.

But surveying the media landscape today, I’ve never been more disappointed in how badly the corporate media is failing to report on the actual machinations of power in Washington, D.C.

In a democracy, journalists are supposed to inform the citizenry about the life-or-death decisions that are made by their elected representatives. Instead, liberal and conservative outlets alike are retreating into their respective corners to spin out superficial narratives and manufacture cultural grievances — all in a futile attempt to preserve their waning ratings and web traffic.

The Intercept is nearly alone in focusing...

How the Governments Case Against a Chinese Immigrant Fell Apart

the butchers of Myanmar

The Myanmar junta is continuing to wage a campaign of terror, and tech companies like Apple and Google are enabling it by allowing apps that fund and support this murderous military.

Activists from Myanmar are urging the companies to remove these apps and they urgently need our help to stand with them.

Sylvia,

The Myanmar junta is continuing to wage a campaign of terror.

The junta has executed four rights activists including a democratically elected MP — the latest in a string of violence that has left over 2,200 people dead and over 800,000 displaced since the military’s attempted coup last year.

And tech companies like Apple and Google are enabling this crackdown by allowing apps that fund and support the murderous junta to operate from their app stores.

Activists from Myanmar are urging the companies to remove these apps, and they need people everywhere to stand with them.

Tell Google and Apple: stop supporting the Myanmar military’s brutal crackdown...

Save these bears

Baby bear locked for years in a cage

Sylvia,

Moon bears are highly intelligent, social animals with a large vocabulary of sounds they use to communicate. In the wild, they live in family units.

But across Vietnam, these bears are caught with vicious traps and crammed into tiny cages. Their teeth and claws are removed and a metal catheter is inserted into their gall bladders to extract bile which is then sold in illegal markets as “traditional medicine.”

We can help set them free.

A group of activists in Hanoi is working flat-out to free the last 257 bile-farm bears in the country – they organise rescues, and engage with farmers directly to persuade them to release the bears. They’ve had amazing success, but for the bears trapped in cages, the progress is too slow.

So they’re asking for our help. If enough of us chip in, we can supercharge their work, help them track down more bears for rescue, fast – and maybe even end this cruel industry for good....

Ive been covering Erik Prince for years. He doesnt seem to like that very much.

This is the third time that Prince has alleged defamation over the same story. His last two attempts have already been thrown out of court — but not before we racked up over $200,000 in legal bills.

This email has the magical ability to make future fundraising emails stop

We still have $260,000 left to raise by December 31. Chip in today and avoid the hustle and bustle of more fundraising emails.

We’re running out of time to reach our ambitious year-end fundraising goal of $500,000 — and to hit that goal, we’re going to have to send a lot of emails asking for donations between now and New Year’s Eve.

Now, we’re going to be totally honest. This isn’t our favorite thing to do. None of us went into journalism because we wanted to spend our time badgering people for donations. And we know it’s probably not your favorite thing either.

But, alas, great journalism doesn’t pay for itself. As an independent, nonprofit news outlet, we believe that reader donations are a far better way to fund our work than, say, corporate advertising — and we hope you do too.

So, as...

A plastic Coke bottle on the beach

Sylvia,

Coca-Cola was just named the world’s worst plastic polluter for the fifth year in a row!

They just won’t fix their problem. So we’re going to take the fight to them.

If enough people reading this email contribute the cost of a single Coke or more, we can buy up enough shares in Coca-Cola and other major plastic polluters to have our say directly at their annual general meetings – and even push for resolutions to their boards forcing them to clean up their act.

Together we’ve already bought shares in Facebook, Google, Monsanto, and more. And our program works – so well, in fact, that after we helped force Apple to adopt its first human rights policy, US regulators started changing rules to try to shut down this kind of work!

But we won’t let that stop us. It’s time for Coke and other plastic polluters to see what we’re made of. Let’s clean up our oceans – chip in now...

Cancer treatment

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Lauri’s son has a rare form of cancer but his treatment isn’t covered. The reason? He is too young. Because of a gap in coverage, each infusion of the immunotherapy drug — which is free for Ontarians over 60 — costs Lauri’s son $8,800. If you agree that immunotherapy medication should be covered for everyone who needs it regardless of their age, add your name to Lauri’s petition.

Brave grandmother Máxima Acuña on her family farm in Peru.

Sylvia,

Brave grandmother Máxima Acuña has been beaten, hospitalized, and bullied in court by the biggest gold mining company in the world.

Our community has come together to help her before…and now she needs our help again.

For more than a decade, Newmont Mining has had its sights set on Máxima’s family farm in Peru. Newmont tried everything to turn the land into a massive new gold and copper mine, but Máxima refused to give up her home…and has paid a brutal price.

After years of lawsuits, Máxima’s legal fund has dried up. A decision on her case will come any day, but it won't be the end of the road. If she wins, Newmont will try to bankrupt her with an appeal. And if the mining Goliath wins, Máxima will have to appeal herself or lose her land. Without more cash, it's a losing battle. Can you chip in to help this brave grandmother win her case once and for...

Young bonobo eating some leaves

Sylvia,

A 20-year ban on industrial logging has been lifted in the Congo Basin, opening up the only home of endangered bonobos to even greater threats from deforestation and illegal poaching.

Without their rainforest home, these gentle apes won't survive. But there is a surefire way to save these bonobos: secure official protection for two million acres of rainforest, and defend it from loggers.

And we can help for as little as £1 / €1 / $1 per acre!

If everyone reading this email chips in, our community-led partners can secure thousands of more acres of critical bonobo habitat right away. Can you help save the bonobos?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately:
