What happened to the salmon this year?

This year is shaping up to be the worst Fraser River sockeye salmon run in recorded history, with just 853,000 of an expected 2.2 million fish returning to spawn. [2]
First Nations communities that depend on Fraser sockeye are bracing for a hard winter. Commercial and sports fisheries are closed. Bears and whales will starve.
Scientists are still piecing together the factors that caused this year’s collapse. But growing evidence suggests deadly sea lice, diseases and viruses spreading from fish farms are killing wild salmon. A recent video suggests farmed salmon may even be eating juvenile wild fish. [3-5]
Biologist and wild salmon activist Alexandra Morton started a petition on Leadnow’s petition site calling on the federal government to end open-net salmon farming for good.

Standing Up At Standing Rock
Brian Ward
Some 1,000 Native American activists from the Standing Rock Indian Reservation and across the country faced off against police and security forces protecting the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline project. Dozens of people have been arrested and assaulted by police while attempting to stop the project, and many more continue to risk arrest to protest the pipeline.
The Dakota Access pipeline, which is being built by Energy Transfer Partners, is planned to stretch 1,172 miles from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa, before ending in Illinois.
The $3.8-billion project was begun in 2014 and is supposed to be completed by the end of the year. Once finished, the pipeline...

Over 11 million people tuned in to watch the last ever Tragically Hip show.
It was a powerful and moving show that brought people together across the country, and everybody is talking about the moment when lead singer Gord Downie sent us a clear message about our relationship to First Nations.
“We were trained our entire lives to ignore, trained our entire lives to hear not a word of what's going on... And what's going on up there ain't good. It's maybe worse than it's ever been… It's really, really bad, but we're going to figure it out, you're going to figure it out.''[1]
With Gord’s call to action echoing across the country, many people are looking for a place to start. If that’s you, check out the resources below, or share them with others in your community.

Halluci Nation members have come together to tell the story of Yasiin Bey, an ally of the Halluci Nation, who has been unjustly detained in Cape Town, South Africa by the ALie-Nation. Thanks to the efforts of one of our guardians, Narcy, Yasiin has finally made his way to our territory. You can watch his journey here on our brothers’ platform. We want to extend our gratitude to our fellow members: DAIS, Pirates Blend and Tribal Spirit for making this possible.
Remember, we are the Halluci Nation. Our DNA is of land and air. We recently asked our sister, Tanya Tagaq, representative of our Inuk contingency, to help us in honouring the part of us that is sky, air, and atmosphere. That part is ᓯᓚ. That...

Hey Jammers,
As we head into fall, there's been a shift in the tone, the mood and feel of global politics. Cool Fascismo looks at the rise of fascist tendencies all over the world, exposing the symptoms of a sick, outdated and demagogic system. Everywhere you look, hatred and fear are increasingly normalized as the world falls deeper into chaos. Have we forgotten the lessons of the past, or is history doomed to repeat itself?

Turkey's Move into Syria:
Challenging the Kurds, Overthrowing Rojava
Phil Hearse
Turkey's incursion into northern Syria on 24 August was flagged up as a move to drive the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) out of the border town of Jarabulus. But that is just a cover: Turkey's not very secret major objective is to crush the 50,000-strong Kurdish YPG (people's Protection Unit) militia, and overrun the three autonomous Kurdish dominated areas, collectively called "Rojava" by the Kurds.
Two days into the Turkish invasion, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim stated bluntly that this operation would not be ended until Islamic State "and other militants" had been crushed. Already there are reports of fighting between Turkish-led forces and the YPG south of Jarabulus and thousands of Turkish troops...

Why Media Democracy?
That the North American media is dominated by corporate monopolies serving capitalist interests and squeezing out critical voices is to state the obvious. The state media in Canada – nationally the CBC and provincially organizations like TV-Ontario (TVO) – provide only the slightest respite from pro-business reportage; the CBC has been equally a key ideological support for neoliberalism, particularly in its news coverage of public policy and economics. Media concentration in Canada is now the highest for the major capitalist countries. The same corporations who control TV and radio also own the major newspapers, but they have also bought up the smaller local media scattered across the country as well. The digital media technologies have added a huge number of new outlets and sites, but they have not broken...
