Police: We'll take those passwords, thanks.

This is insane: police chiefs want to pass a new law that would force you to reveal the passwords to all your digital devices and Internet accounts.1

Just imagine, in one fell swoop giving police access to all your emails, browser history, photos, Facebook messages, documents, downloads, even your dating app chats. Your entire private life would be under their microscope.

What’s worse, the Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale has refused to rule out this dangerous and extreme idea.2 Instead he says he wants to consider it as part of a crucial upcoming consultation. And that consultation will start any day now.

Disrupting Islamophobia in Our Neighborhoods

In airports, through police surveillance, at press conferences and political rallies: stereotyping and scapegoating of Muslims is pervasive - and all too often, even celebrated.

But we can help stop it.

Since January, JVP chapters and members have posted thousands of “Stop Profiling Muslim” posters in restaurants, bodegas, storefronts, and homes from Seattle to Boston. Because sometimes, the simplest actions can go a long way.

JVP members across the country are signed up to canvass with these posters in the next few weeks. Can you chip in $10 to help print and ship them?

Looking at any paper or newscast, it’s inescapable. Major political leaders, no matter their political differences otherwise, promote Islamophobia--either openly declaring Muslims a threat to national security or attempting to carve out a limited exception for those considered “good” Muslims.

France and the Struggle over Labour Reforms

Maxime Benatouil

The so-called Labour Law, passed en force by the French government on 20 July, is the most serious attack against the "Code du Travail," already undermined for the past thirty years. A short historical overview is necessary to better grasp the destructive scope of this law, promoted and enforced by a socialist government -- cruel irony!

The Labour Code is a compilation of regulations giving structures to the relationship between employees and employers at the national level. It emerged after the shock of the 1906 catastrophe of Courrières, Northern France, where 1099 miners lost their lives.

The underlying idea was to adapt labour to people, and not people to labour. If the principle of...

Trudeau needs a Climate 101 Crash Course.

On October 24th, students will teach Prime Minister Trudeau some basic climate science. r1

Friends,

It’s Climate 101 that meeting the commitments Canada made in Paris means keeping fossil fuels in the ground -- that means rejecting the Kinder Morgan pipeline this December.

That’s why we, along with dozens of other youth and students, are headed to Ottawa in late October to teach the Prime Minister the most basic lesson of climate science: climate leaders don’t build pipelines.

Justin Trudeau promised to respect Indigenous rights, listen to communities and lead on climate action. He will fail to do all of this if he builds another tar sands pipeline.

So here’s our plan.

On October 24th, throngs of young people from all over the country will converge in Ottawa for a march and civil disobedience action. Emboldened by our passion, our hope and our frustration with politics-as-usual, we will partake...
