The Traffic Hierarchy

One is not born a motorist, one becomes one.

Planka.nu

Mobility and class are deeply entangled. Not only because one's potential for mobility often has to do with one's economic position, but also because a society built on today's mobility paradigm -- automobility -- directly contributes to growing economic and social differences.

A society which puts the car on a pedestal quite obviously favours motorists. Another obvious fact is that white high-income and middle-aged men are an over-represented group among motorists. And the opposite is true among public transport users. But, a society that prioritises motoring, and looks at ever-growing mobility as an almost magical recipe for development, increases the differences between its citizens and different parts in other ways...

G20 Leaders push for short-term recovery with structural reforms – trade unions call for long-term i

Brussels, 6 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The G20 Summit in Hangzhou, China, endorses a pro-growth push and strengthens focus on the developing world. But G20 Leaders fail to see that a pro-demand growth trajectory, fair wage distribution and quality jobs for the future cannot be achieved with present structural reforms.

The 11th G20 Summit held in Hangzhou, China, on 4 and 5 September closed with the release of its final Communiqué and Action Plans. Despite negative interest rates, Brexit, stagnant growth in the Eurozone, with a strong chance of further monetary easing by the ECB, and fragile growth in the G20's emerging economies, the text is upbeat and focuses more on short-term structural solutions and long-term gains from innovation.

"The G20 is taking a pro-growth road but leaves jobs and demand aside. Despite important outcomes of the G20 Labour Ministers Meeting in July, answers to employment gaps and persisting low wages are reduced to one out of 48 paragraphs. While the Sustainable Wage Principles are endorsed along with commitments on apprenticeships and employability, there is no decisive policy link made to G20 growth strategies, and follow-up actions are missing," said Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).

ITUC OnLine: Trade unions call on G20 leaders to boost the wage share of national income

Labour 20 Statement to the G20 Summit, China

Brussels, 05 August 2016 (ITUC OnLine): World leaders will meet for the September G20 Summit in Hangzhou China as growth in the global economy contracts and the wage share of national income continues to fall.

Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation said G20 leaders must support new principles on labour income share for income inequality agreed by G20 Labour ministers.

"A policy agenda that rebuilds strong labour market institutions to create quality jobs and reduce income inequality must be a priority for world leaders meeting in Hangzhou.
Business as usual by governments won't work. Wages need to rise, and with public investment in infrastructure the global economy can grow," said Sharan Burrow.

Prime Minister Trudeau: time to let U.S. Iraq War resisters stay in Canada!

A message from the War Resisters Support Campaign

Across the country, supporters of U.S. Iraq War resisters have been working hard to ensure that the Liberal government acts quickly to resolve their cases and let them stay. Your letters, emails and phone calls have had a real impact – but we aren't there yet.

The Federal Court has given the government a deadline of September 16th to indicate whether the litigation against U.S. Iraq war resisters that was initiated under Harper will continue, or whether the Liberal government will stop pursuing Harper's policies on this issue.

War resisters need your help – here are two important things you can do right now:

India: Government Should Heed Message of General Strike - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 2 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi should heed the clear message from a huge general strike in India today, as workers across the country backed calls for a living minimum wage and decent pensions, proper enforcement of labour laws, measures to stimulate creation of formal jobs and universal social security cover. Tens of millions of workers joined the strike, including in transport, banks, public services, manufacturing and other sectors.

Brazil: Deposing of President Dilma Rousseff Will Unleash Wave of Corporate Greed - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 1 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The international trade union movement is warning that a wave of corporate greed will be unleashed in Brazil following the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff by a corruption-riddled Congress. The all-male, all-white cabinet, headed by little-known former Vice-president Michel Temer, had already been drawing up plans for massive budget cuts immediately after taking the reins of power when Dilma was suspended pending the result of the Senate impeachment hearings. Fifteen of the initial 24 cabinet ministers, including Temer himself, face corruption allegations or criminal charges. Whilst in office, Dilma refused to hobble ongoing corruption investigations, including into members of her own political party.

Brazil: Interim Government set to Privatise Key Assets and Cut Social Spending - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 26 August 2016 (ITUC OnLine): With Brazil’s Senate starting formal impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff, the interim government of Michel Temer is set to launch a huge programme of privatisations and cuts in education, health and other social programmes. Fundamental labour rights are also under attack by the government, and the country’s national trade union centres, CUT, FS, UGT /CNPL, CSB, CTB and NCST have jointly pledged to fight against plans to eviscerate the labour code. The largest of them, CUT, is leading a campaign against the impeachment of Dilma and attacks on former President Lula.

Free Public Transit

Free Public Transit

Public transit lies at the intersection of several critical social struggles today. Affordable (or free) public transit is an important mechanism for redistribution, and particularly targets low income women and people of colour. A central component of public policies to address climate change must be mass expenditures on public transit to reduce reliance on private cars and fossil fuels. Mass transit also enables an increase in the density and livability of cities. And public transit that is free and available as a social right is a core demand to decommodify everyday life in opposition to endless consumerism. Transit justice is, then, a crucial aspect of social justice today, and should be a fundamental part of the political programme of progressives and socialists. The struggle for the extension of free and...
