Disabled People Give Lead In Fight Against UK Austerity

John Clarke

I recently had the enormous honour of representing the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) at a week of action and international conference, organized from September 4-10 by Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) in the UK. This was another step in building a close working relationship between our two organizations. It was also fascinating and inspiring to see disabled people, not merely participating in the struggle against austerity but actually giving a powerful and decisive lead to the entire movement.

Since 2010, governments in the UK have moved into a cutting edge role in the implementation of the agenda of austerity. Central to this has been a drive to degrade and undermine income support...

Canadian courts ordering search engines to censor search results

I wanted to get in touch with you and share some important news that will break today about OpenMedia.

OpenMedia will be intervening at the Supreme Court of Canada to prevent global censorship of search results. This is an unprecedented leap forward for our work — it will fundamentally shape free expression online and your right to access information around the world.

We only have one shot at this, and the deadline is coming up fast. We need to ensure we have the resources to make the strongest case possible.

Will you contribute now so we can Defend Your Right to Free Expression at the Supreme Court?

The Details: The Supreme Court will be considering an appeal to a decision1 made last year by the British Columbia Court of Appeal in Equustek Solutions Inc. -v- Jack that required removal of global search results.

ITUC Condemns Killing of Somali Journalist

Brussels, 28 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has condemned the murder of Somali journalist Abdiasis Mohamed Ali, who was killed on 27 September by two men armed with pistols in northern Mogadishu. Ali was on his way from the radio station where we worked, Radio Shabelle, to visit relatives in the Jiiro-garoob neighbourhood of Yaqshid district when he was shot five times in the chest and neck. A member and activist in the journalists' union NUSOJ, part of the ITUC-affiliated Somalian trade union centre FESTU, Ali was the 13th journalist to be murdered in the country in the past nine years.

Brazil: Trade Unions and Human Rights Lawyers #StandWithLula as Show-Trial Looms - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 21 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): International and US trade unions joined with prominent human rights lawyers in denouncing unfounded charges against former Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, at a special event in New York on 20 September hosted by the ITUC and the AFL-CIO. As the event took place, with an address from Lula via video link, prosecutor Sérgio Moro announced in Brazil that he will now act as judge in hearing charges against Lula which first surfaced through right-wing media conglomerate Globo more than five years ago. One of Moro's fellow prosecutors, Roberson Pozzobon, admitted last week that there was no clear evidence around the central charge that Lula secretly owned an apartment in Guarujá.

Colombian Trade Unions Back Peace Accord - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 19 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): Colombia's three trade union centres CGT, CTC and CUT have given strong backing to a "Yes" vote in the upcoming plebiscite on the peace accord to end decades of civil conflict in the country. A joint event organised by the three union centres in Medellín on 15 September, attended by 5,000 people, gave a strong endorsement to the Accord. Uruguayan Senator and former President José "Pepe" Mujica addressed the event, along with the Presidents of the three organisations, TUCA General Secretary Víctor Báez and ITUC Deputy General Secretary Jaap Wienen.

"Generations of Colombians have known no peace," said Mujica, adding that "the war should be on poverty and hunger."

Baez described the Medellín event as the "major political act in favour of a yes vote do date, demonstrating that unions internationally and nationally defend peace as a matter of principle."

Prosecutors Allegations Against ex-President Lula put Brazils Justice System on Trial - ITUC O

Brussels, 15 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): Allegations by prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol against former Brazilian President Lula, recycling discredited claims that he secretly owned a beach apartment in Guarujá and alleging that he presided over a massive corruption scandal, are putting Brazil's justice system itself on trial, according to the ITUC. Populist judge Sérgio Moro, whose daily media appearances have turned him into a star of right-wing press conglomerate Globo, now has the power to decide to press formal charges based on the allegations. Moro was forced to apologise to the country's Supreme Court for illegally tapping Lula's phone in March.

Bangladesh Government and Global Brands Share Responsibility for Factory Deaths - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 12 September 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The tragic deaths of at least 30 workers and injuries to many more in Saturday's fire at the Tampoco Foil factory in Bangladesh shows the callous disregard of the Bangladesh government for workers' safety, and the failure of multinational companies doing business with the factory to take responsibility for the lives of workers in their supply chains.

The workers died when a boiler exploded in the factory building, an old structure to which extra floors had been added, spreading fire and eventually causing the building to collapse. The cramped building, full of flammable materials, was entirely unsuitable for a factory, and according to information received by the ITUC, had only one working exit.

What is Marxism? Socialist Fightback UVic Event

Hello all!

Next Monday, October 3rd, is our second discussion night of Fall 2016. The discussion will focus on the actual ideas of Karl Marx and they developed from a philosophical critique of idealism into an economic critique of capitalism. Understanding these ideas is at the core of understanding what socialism actually is. Is Obama's Affordable Care Act socialism? Was FDR a socialist? There are many who would say yes. Please join us to discuss the root of these ideas and how they can be applied to better understand the development of human society.

Here is a link to the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1801876390057875/

The event will be held at UVic in SUB B025 @ 6:30pm next Monday. Email back if you need directions or are unable to meet during this time but would like to meet up at another time.

In Solidarity,

Socialist Fightback UVic
