The Building Storm Against the TPP

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is the one of the most recent of the neoliberal trade agreements being proposed. The final proposal was signed off in February 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand by 12 countries – Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the USA, and Vietnam, after 7 years of negotiation. It awaits ratification in each country. It is a companion agreement to the existing NAFTA agreement, and the CETA and TTIP agreements that Canada and the U.S. are respectively negotiating with the EU.

The agreement contains 30 chapters covering a huge array of issues. The claims of the agreement are, of course, to “promote economic growth; support the creation and retention of jobs; enhance innovation, productivity and competitiveness; raise living standards;...

The Future of the Euro Area

The Future of the Euro Area

Frederic Heine and Thomas Sablowski

The unequal development of the countries of the euro area since the outbreak of the crisis is causing increasing friction that threatens to tear the monetary union apart. Contrary to what many critics of the monetary union suggest, responsibility for this development lies not alone with its internal structure, but is rather a general feature of capitalist development. It is illusory to believe that under the dominance of the capitalist mode of production a spatially even development would ever be possible. Rather, the current monetary regime reinforces the cycles of capitalist crisis.

During the boom phase of the economy before the crisis, the economic and social gap between the centre and the periphery...

We're bringing the Kinder Morgan fight to Ottawa. Here's how you can help. r1

(You already got one email from us yesterday by accident about a bus leaving Toronto -- please ignore, unless you happen to be in that area. My apologies for the mistake!)

Friends,

Four years ago, I was organizing my first action for the climate justice movement. I was working with a campus-based group in British Columbia to demand that the premier of the province, Christy Clark, oppose the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline.

At the time, we were a small but passionate group of students and faculty – and the fight against Kinder Morgan was big and daunting. I was hopeful but it was difficult to be optimistic. Oh, how much things have changed.

On Monday, over a hundred youth and students will risk arrest in Ottawa...

A New Structure of Feeling hits newsstands worldwide today!

Hey Jammers,

Did modernity kill the human spirit? Did capitalism precipitate our existential crisis? Is the natural order of the world now toast? From the utopian glow of cyber abstraction to the brutality of the new Dark Age, we wonder what will come after the mo and pomo eras bite the dust. And what shall we call this new era - what’s it all about? Is it still mo + pomo minus the cynicism? Or is it nomo with a brick in your hand?

Toronto: Join the bus to Climate 101

There will be a bus to Ottawa leaving from Toronto. Reserve your spot! r1

Friends,

On October 24th, throngs of young people from across Canada will risk arrest for the Climate 101 action in Ottawa to call on Prime Minister Trudeau to reject the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

Across Canada, people are grilling the Trudeau government in the lead up to the Kinder Morgan decision in December. Just last week, hundreds in Winnipeg confronted the Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr calling for a rejection of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Now, weeks before the next round of UN climate talks, young people will bring this fight to the capital city.

Here’s your chance to join them.

There will be a bus leaving for Ottawa from Toronto. If you’re a young person interested in joining the Climate 101 action, sign up for...

Is "Postcapitalism" On the Horizon?

A Socialist Project e-bulletin .... No. 1317 .... October 19, 2016
____________________________________________________

Is "Postcapitalism" On the Horizon?

Andrew Jackson

Paul Mason is a leading British economic journalist, currently a columnist for The Guardian. He is also a long time left political activist. His new book, Postcapitalism: A Guide to Our Future (Farrar, Strauss and Giroux. New York, 2015) is a challenging, sometimes obscure, sometimes brilliant, eminently worthwhile read, and an optimistic take that the left might, once again, be marching in tune with the forces of history.

Mason is, to say the least, highly original and idiosyncratic. His book is partly addressed to the orthodox Marxist left, endorses and builds upon the labour theory of value, takes seriously the possibility of a planned, non market economy, and pays tribute to the traditions of radical working-class socialism....
