ALBA Social Movements in Canada Condemn the Attacks
Against Brazil's Landless Workers’ Movement
On the morning of November 4th, 2016, Brazilian military and civilian police used violent force to storm Brazil's, Landless Workers Movement's (MST) Florestan Fernandes National School (ENFF) in Guararema, outside of Sao Paulo in Brazil. According to several witnesses, the police stormed their way into the facility by forcing their way through the main gate shooting live bullets, and threatening people.
As a founding member of Via Campesina, the MST has worldwide recognition as an important peasant social movement, with a commitment to the protection of rural communities and workers and the struggle for land reform. The Florestan Fernandes school has been committed to building social consciousness and popular unity for over...

Friends,
Right now, community members in Ottawa and Montreal are sitting in at the offices of Environment & Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna and Transport Minister Marc Garneau calling on them to publicly oppose the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline. Already, from the sit in at Minister McKenna’s office, I spoke over the phone with the Minister, and, during the call, she criticized Kinder Morgan CEO, Ian Anderson, for comments he made yesterday denying the science of climate change. But, simply disagreeing with climate deniers isn’t enough - we need politicians like Minister McKenna and Minister Garneau to stand up to big oil and publicly oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline.
You can show your support with those of us sitting in at these offices. Click here and call the offices of these Ministers...

Important update: Animal Justice in court to save dogs

Dear PAOV,
Animal Justice went to court in Chatham, Ontario yesterday to fight for the lives of 21 dogs who were rescued from the horrors of a dogfighting ring. Even though these dogs are victims themselves, the Ontario SPCA is asking a court to execute them, claiming they are unsafe.
The 21 dogs aren't given names in the court filings—only numbers. I want to share the heartbreaking story of...

Standing Rock Solid with the Frackers:
Are the Trades Putting Labour’s Head in the Gas Oven?
Sean Sweeney
If anyone were looking for further evidence that the AFL-CIO remains unprepared to accept the science of climate change, and unwilling to join with the effort being made by all of the major labour federations of the world to address the crisis, the fight over the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) provides only the most recent case in point. Taking direction from the newly minted North American Building Trades Unions (NABTU) and the American Petroleum Institute (API), the federation stood against the Standing Rock Sioux and other tribal nations.
In a recent video interview, NABTU president Sean McGarvey dismissed those who oppose the expansion of fossil fuels...

Friends,
Right now, I’m sitting in at the constituency office of Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr in Winnipeg. In Toronto, more concerned people are doing the same thing at the office of Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett.
We’re calling on the Ministers to publicly oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline because it would wreck Canada’s chances at meeting our Paris climate commitments and because it would break this government’s promises to respect Indigenous rights.
Right now, we need your help to get this message across to the Ministers. Click here and call the Ministers’ constituency offices to tell them to oppose Kinder Morgan.

The final cabinet decision on Kinder Morgan could come in a matter of weeks, and both Minister Carr and Minister Bennett have a lot of power over...

Syria and the Antiwar Tradition
David Bush
There is major disorientation on the left in many Western countries when it comes to Syria and about how antiwar activists should respond to events on the ground in Syria and Iraq. The highly complex nature of the Syrian war involving a multitude of foreign states and non-state actors would, in the best of times, present the left with a real challenge to find political clarity. The fact that this is occurring precisely when the antiwar movement in countries like Canada and the United States are relatively weak only adds to the confusion.
The way in which the debate about the Syrian war has been framed and conducted by large parts of the left has been unhelpful...

How Migration Policies Created a “Jungle”

© Sara Prestianni The “Jungle of Calais” is a sprawling display of Europe’s failed migration policies. This week, authorities cleared the informal migrant encampment of its thousands of residents. Encampments like this are a result of ineffective pledges from political leaders, and deficient European reception centers that don’t meet the needs of incoming migrants and refugees. It’s a dysfunctional system made worse by uneven policymaking, and until this changes, these encampments, once cleared, will simply return.
