Two Takes on Remaking the U.S. Left

Build an Independent, Democratic Socialist Left

Bernie Sanders

The following is an excerpt from Bernie Sanders's speech at a meeting of the National Committee for Independent Political Action in New York City on June 22, 1989, published under the title "Reflections from Vermont" in the December 1989 issue of Monthly Review.

It seems obvious to me that there is no way that we can deal with the enormous economic, social, and environmental problems facing this country without making radical changes in the economic system, and we've got to be honest about that. I believe that democratic socialism is the appropriate framework for making those changes, and we should be upfront about our beliefs. . . .

When...

Tomorrow: Join me for a live webinar on stopping Kinder Morgan.

Tune in for my chat with Rueben George from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation this Wednesday. r1

Friends,

The damage from last week’s US election will be measured in geologic time. But, even if the Trump presidency is happening at a time when we can least afford it, we still have reasons to hope and reasons to fight. In fact, with Donald Trump threatening to derail climate progress around the globe, the world needs Canada, and Justin Trudeau, to step up and be bold.

That means rejecting the Kinder Morgan pipeline because it is one of the single biggest threats to our climate. Prime Minister Trudeau clearly has all the evidence he needs to reject the pipeline -- but what will truly decide this fight is...

Ontario's Austerity Government Sets Basic Income Trap

Ontario’s Austerity Government Sets Basic Income Trap

John Clarke

The Ontario Government's Adviser on Basic Income (BI), Hugh Segal, has released his much heralded discussion paper, "Finding a Better Way," that sets out his proposals for a lengthy BI pilot project. If the experiment he advocates is put into effect, it will run parallel to the deliberations of a Security Reform Working Group that will be considering changes to the present social assistance system in the province, rather than replacement to it.

Segal's proposal is being put forward in an international context of considerably enhanced interest in the notion of Basic Income (BI). The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) has been very sceptical when considering the nature and possibilities of BI in general but,...

Chinese Workers' Uprising

Chinese Workers’ Uprising:
Unions, Workers, and Resistance in China Today

China has been the fastest growing major economy in the world for three decades. It is also home to some of the largest, most incendiary, and most underreported labor struggles of our time. But under China’s labor management system, independent unionism is severely restricted, and the ACFTU official trade union body monopolizes worker representation for more than 800 million workers. Independent organizations are barred from agitating for their interests, despite growing wealth inequalities, and where long hours, safety hazards, and authoritarian management define life in the factories.

But this has not prevented the emergence of workers’ resistance and fightbacks across almost all sectors of work. The China Labour Bulletin reports that the number of strikes has...

Is socialism utopian? Discussion this Monday

Hello friends and comrades,

We know that everybody is interested in talking about the election of Donald Trump right now so we're preparing an extra event in November for this very purpose. Watch out for invitations and posters to "How to Defeat Trump".

In the meantime though, without revolutionary theory there can be no revolutionary movement. Our American comrades and the IMT have made some excellent predictions on how this recent election would play out and they do that on the basis of having studied the methods of Marx at length. Let us follow their example!

Historically, there were many competing understandings of what socialism meant and how it could be achieved. The works of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were largely intended to offer a logical analysis of how society develops historically and why socialism was the natural inheritor of capitalism. Engels wrote a pamphlet on the subject of how Marxism...

Ford Unifor Agreement Ratified -- Voted Down at Oakville Unit, Local 707

Herman Rosenfeld

As bargaining between Unifor and the Canadian branches of the Detroit Three automakers came down to the last company, Ford, the signs were pointing to an emerging resistance to decades of concessions. Amid general opposition on the shop floor, leaders at the biggest Ford local were openly opposing the pattern the union had bargained with General Motors and Fiat Chrysler (FCA).

But at the October 31st deadline, the Unifor locals reached a tentative agreement with Ford, based on the pattern. Ratification votes were held November 5 and 6 and the agreement was narrowly passed by 58% across the Ford Canada local unions and therefore came into effect, even though it...
