Thousands united to Stop Kinder Morgan

Photos: 2,000+ people in 50+ communities across Canada join day of #KMVigils. r1

Friends,

Monday night was an evening of beauty, strength, and resilience. Over 2,000 people in more than 50 communities stood united against the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline for the national day of #KMvigils. From coast to coast to coast, people stood in unity to tell Prime Minister Trudeau that he needs to honour his promises on climate action and Indigenous rights by rejecting Kinder Morgan.

Today we need to lean into our power and keep the pressure on. Can you send an email to PM Trudeau and his cabinet to tell them to reject Kinder Morgan?

Here are some of my favourite photos from this immensely powerful day.

CYDaily from COP22 -- Report from day 11

The Canadian Youth Climate Coalition

McKenna Meeting

In the wake of the CYD’s powerful action from Wednesday evening at the Canadians at COP reception, and amongst pressure from CAN-RAC, Minister McKenna finally agreed to meet with us. In the early hours of Thursday morning, with a strict 15 minute deadline, our mission was simple: tell a narrative of resistance and compassion by amplifying the voices of Indigenous and marginalized voices on our team. Christa, Brendan and Maya each addressed the minister for roughly five minutes while she sat and listened. Too often are we forced to hear the disingenuous and time-consuming rhetoric of politicians, so we were keen that McKenna listen instead of respond. Our intent was to express that Canadian youth are bearing witness to injustice. Our intent was to showcase our knowledge and understanding of the intersectional linkages that make up a justice-based approach to climate action. Our intent was to tell the minister, in no uncertain terms, that we know the approval of pipelines will have direct human impacts in the Global South. We know that First Nations communities are already dying due to proximity to toxicity (environmental racism), and that we understand that the decisions the Trudeau government makes are directly responsible for this.

Turning It Around: Long-Term Organizing in the U.S.

Just about everybody is using the slogan "Don't mourn, organize" -- good solidarity with the martyr for the working class, Joe Hill. But it seems particularly apposite after the recent Trump election in the USA. International Viewpont interviewed Joanna Misnik, leading activist in Solidarity, about the election, the reaction and prospects for long-term organizing.

International Viewpont (IV): What are your first thoughts on the election outcome?

Joanna Misnik (JM): The U.S. just elected a new "leader of the free world." Both he and his opponent Hillary Clinton ran their entire campaigns with persistently high rates on disapproval from the public. Fully 12 million people who voted for Trump stated they had an unfavorable attitude toward him. But the...

Today: Join the day of vigils to stop Kinder Morgan

Light some candles today to join the day of #KMVigils. r1

Friends,

Today is the day. From Victoria to Halifax, people from coast to coast will stand up against the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline.

Tonight, with thousands of people planning to attend over 45 vigils across the country, we will make it clear to Prime Minister Trudeau: climate leaders don’t build pipelines -- reject Kinder Morgan.

There isn’t one nearby, but you can still be a part of this critical moment. We need folks from all over to share their commitment to stop Kinder Morgan today. It could be as simple as gathering a few friends, and spelling out “STOP KM” with some tea lights, holding a sign together or just following along online -- but...

Beluga whale dies at Vancouver Aquarium

r1 Animals need your help r33

Dear PAOV,

A beluga whale named Qila died this week at the Vancouver Aquarium, where she had been confined to a tiny tank for her entire life. Qila was only 21 years old—much younger than the 35-50 years the average beluga would live in the wild.

Qila leaves behind her mother Aurora, who is now the only surviving beluga at the Vancouver Aquarium. Tragically, Aurora is also sick. We still don't know if she...

CYDaily from COP22 -- Report from day 10

The Canadian Youth Climate Coalition

Report from day 10

Global community calls on Canada to align actions with rhetoric on fossil fuel projects

The CYD’s Maya Menezes and Oil Change International’s Adam Scott were joined on a panel this morning by Lidy Nacpil of the Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice from the Philippines, Benson Ireri of Christian Aid in Africa, and Kevin Hart, Regional Manitoba Chief with the Assembly of First Nations, Canada.

The panel came together to discuss Canada’s failure on climate action. In the recent weeks, Trudeau’s government has talked a big game on addressing the very real and pressing issues of global environmental destruction. Minister McKenna arrived in Marrakech this week with an entourage of youth. While it’s incredibly important that youth and indigenous youth be represented in climate negotiations and discussions, it was lost on no one that McKenna seemingly used her large entourage as a human shield to protect herself from actually addressing Canada’s catastrophic and fatal failures to not only Indigenous Peoples, but to the rest of the world.
