Protesting the Capitalist University

The University of Manitoba is on strike. Since 1st November, more than 1,200 faculty members took to the picket line to protest the lack of funding for education, a need for workload protection and safeguarding for fairer tenure and promotion procedures, in addition to addressing several job security issues for instructors and librarians. Author of The Capitalist University, Henry Heller is a professor of History at the University of Manitoba, he writes here of the strike and how the walkout resonates with the themes of his book.

Authors don't often get to live out the denouement of their books. Yet that is what is happening to me as I blog. On 20 October Pluto published The Capitalist University: The Transformations...

Deep breaths. Now lets plan the fight ahead.

Amidst this uncertainty, one thing is crystal clear: our work is more important than ever. r1

Friends,

It’s hard to know what to say in a moment like this. Many of us are reeling from the news and shaken to the core about what a Trump Presidency will mean for not just the United States, but the world and the work ahead for our movements.

Trump’s racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and climate denial stand in stark contrast to the world we are fighting for, and they make the ground on which we fight for justice more unstable than we have perhaps ever known. But, amidst this uncertainty, one thing is crystal clear this morning, our work just became more important than ever.

Donald Trump has encouraged violence against migrants, people of colour, women and Muslims. He pledged to tear up the Paris climate agreement, resurrect the...

Why the Next U.S. President Won't Be Able to Reinstate Torture

Open Society Foundations A prison yard at night © John Moore/Getty
Last month, a judge held that no one—not even the president—can lawfully authorize torture. It was perhaps the most definitive appellate court opinion on the matter since 9/11. Now, as the U.S. prepares to elect its next president, the court’s decision recalls the dark revelations exposed by the CIA “torture report” two years ago. It also reminds us that torture can take many forms, from abusive drug war tactics to denial of pain relief. The courts have spoken. Now, America’s next president must listen.

Organize your community to stop Kinder Morgan.

November 21st will be a national day of action against Kinder Morgan. Join in. r1

Friends,

Prime Minister Trudeau will announce his decision on the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline any day now. We know that if approved, the Kinder Morgan pipeline would be devastating for the climate and Indigenous rights.

This is an all hands on deck moment. We need to stand together, from coast to coast, to stop Kinder Morgan.

On November 21st, there will be nation-wide vigils to stop Kinder Morgan. Will you sign up to organize a vigil against this pipeline in your community?

We are holding vigils because the fight against Kinder Morgan is a serious and grave issue.

We need to make it clear to Prime Minister Trudeau that if he plans to stay true to his commitments to the climate and Indigenous rights, he must reject Kinder Morgan....

Violence Against Healthcare Workers: A Canadian Experience

Violence Against Healthcare Workers: A Canadian Experience

James T. Brophy, Margaret M. Keith, Michael Hurley

According to healthcare workers interviewed this past year by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU)/Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the health and wellbeing of the individuals devoted to caring for our health seems to be increasingly at risk from angry, frustrated, or out of control patients. Their experiences are chilling.

"Very quickly, the patient bolted to his feet with his hand and arm cocked, ran across the room and hit me in the nose and under the eye. I immediately fell backwards. I started to bleed, profusely, from my nose. I couldn't breathe. I started to panic."

A Chronic and Widespread Problem

Every one of...
