The Spectre of the Communist Manifesto

Hello all,

A spectre is haunting UVic — the spectre of communism! Next Monday, October 31st, will be our next discussion night of Fall 2016. We will be discussing a very historic work, the Communist Manifesto (see here - http://bit.ly/1gPDLW4). Written in 1848 by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the Communist Manifesto provided a basic analysis for the growing revolutionary wave that was, at that time, engulfing Europe. In the future, we will be reading more in-depth texts written by Marx and Engels and the Communist Manifesto, being one of their earliest works on the subject, provides a solid foundation on which to build an understanding of socialism. We highly encourage people read the Manifesto and come to our discussion with questions.

Here is a link to the Facebook event page. The event will be at 6:30pm in SUB B025. Halloween candy will be shared :)

In Solidarity,

Socialist Fightback UVic

Chinese Workers' Uprising

Chinese Workers’ Uprising:
Unions, Workers, and Resistance in China Today

When: Sunday October 30th, 2pm
Where: Beit Zatoun Cultural Centre, 612 Markham Street, Toronto

China has been the fastest growing major economy in the world for three decades. It is also home to some of the largest, most incendiary, and most underreported labor struggles of our time. But under China's labor management system, independent unionism is severely restricted, and the ACFTU official trade union body monopolizes worker representation for more than 800 million workers. Independent organizations are barred from agitating for their interests, despite growing wealth inequalities, and where long hours, safety hazards, and authoritarian management define life in the factories.

But this has not prevented the emergence of workers' resistance and fightbacks across almost all sectors of work. The China Labour Bulletin reports that the number of strikes has been increasing over the past...

Fighting the TPP: Niagara Labour Organizes

From a Townhall Presentation on the Trans-Pacific Partnership on October 22 by Bruce Allen, organized by the Niagara Regional Labour Council, for which Bruce is Vice-President.

Bruce Allen

I want to take this opportunity to present a short overview of local activity in Niagara in response to the TPP. It will emphasize in particular the leading role which the Niagara Regional Labour Council (NRLC) has played in this activity.

The first actions to show opposition to the TPP were initiated last autumn. They essentially came from outside of the labour movement. They were initiated largely by former members of the Occupy group which existed in Niagara in the wake of the global economic meltdown of 2008. Their efforts were...

Justice for the victims of pig truck rollover

r1 Help us get animal cruelty charges laid against slaughterhouse r33

Dear PAOV,

Three weeks ago, a truck carrying 180 pigs rolled over as it approached the Fearmans Pork slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario. In the horrifying aftermath of the crash, many pigs were trapped inside the wreckage, hurt and dying.

Despite the traumatic crash, the surviving pigs were shown no mercy. Instead, they were hit with paddles to force them out of the truck, left outside with no shade...

The Crisis of European Integration and the Challenges for the Left

The Crisis of European Integration and the Challenges for the Left

Panagiotis Sotiris

The elephant in the room is now visible to everyone. All the developments of the past years, from the extreme violence and cynicism of the “memoranda of understanding” imposed upon Greece to the decision of the British referendum in favour of Brexit, point to the same direction: the deep crisis of European Integration. It was supposed to be the most advanced example of economic and political integration and the first successful introduction of a single currency in such a broad area. It presented itself as a paragon of stability and human rights. Yet the reality is very different.

Faced with the global capitalist crisis of 2007-8 not only did the EU...

World Polio Day

r1 Ensure no child is left behind by ending polio once and for all.
View in browser
Hey Paov,

When I was six months old, doctors told my parents that I had polio, which should have sealed my fate in India, my birth country. Instead, I was adopted by a family in Canada and received critical medical care and surgeries allowing me to eventually walk with the help of crutches and braces.

Today, I live a life engaged in my community all because I had access to corrective surgeries and rehabilitation. But many other children stricken with polio do not.

I just got arrested.

75+ young people were arrested on parliament just now. I was one of them. r1

Friends,

Within the last hour, over 75 young people in Ottawa were arrested. I was one of them. We were arrested demanding that Prime Minister Trudeau reject Kinder Morgan -- because climate leaders don’t build pipelines.

This morning, we started the day with a powerful march and rally at the University of Ottawa. I had the opportunity to hear from Cedar Parker-George from the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation whose community is on the forefront of the fight against Kinder Morgan pipeline. This pipeline threatens the coastal environment which his nation has depended on since time immemorial. Following the rally we marched to Parliament and, in waves, we crossed over police fences and were arrested.

I was nervous about getting...
