WIN! Public pressure allows Bove to stay in Canada, speak at Groundswell conference
Jose Bove, a Member of the European Parliament and critic of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), is now allowed to stay in Canada for seven days, but questions remain about why he was detained entry into the country and forced to miss a public forum on CETA last night in Montreal.

Brexit and the Crisis of the Left

Asbjørn Wahl

The British majority in favour of leaving the EU (Brexit) was surprising, even shocking, to many. The discussion runs high on both the result and the causes. The confusion seems to be extraordinarily high on the left, in Britain as in the rest of Europe. In reality, the result of the referendum reflects an EU in existential crisis, while the discussion reflects a Left in deep political and ideological crisis.

Seen from a left position, the British campaign was of course not without problems. The Brexit campaign was dominated by forces on the political right, and anti-immigration, xenophobia and racism were at the centre, although it was not as dominant as many media reported. National...

Update: B.C. court lets Animal Justice intervene in Vancouver Aquarium lawsuit

r1 Protecting those who film and expose animal abuse r33

Dear PAOV,

I have an important update in a case we first told you about a few weeks ago—a dangerous copyright lawsuit filed by the Vancouver Aquarium that could be used to silence Canadian films, videos, and undercover investigations into animal abuse.

The B.C. Court of Appeal just agreed to let Animal...

CETA faces crucial meeting of European leaders on October 18
A German court ruling on October 13, Austria's interpretation of a proposed side agreement, and ongoing opposition in two regions of Belgium are all critical factors in whether the Council of the European Union will have the unanimous support it needs on October 18 to then move forward with the signing of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) as planned...

The Arctic Voyage of the Crystal Serenity

Celebrating the Beginning of the "End Times"?

J. F. Conway

--------------------------------------------
"Global warming presents a clear and present danger to civilization."
— Lonnie G. Thompson, expert on glacial melt, 2010.
--------------------------------------------

Capitalism's four-century obsession with finding a more profitable route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans is finally satisfied. The voyage of the Crystal Serenity through the Northwest Passage proclaimed the route open for routine, if still risky, commercial shipping. The ship left Vancouver on 10 August 2016, arriving in New York on 16 September. The Northwest Passage reduces the voyage by 7,000 kilometers and an average of 14 days, compared to the Panama Canal route. The Canal will eventually fall into relative disuse -- it...

Trudeau can't charm his way around math.

The new math on climate change is clear: no fossil fuel infrastructure anywhere. r1

Dear Friends,

Sometimes there’s a new fact in the world, and today is one of those days. It’s a grim fact, but a powerful one that will undergird our work together for years to come.

In late September, our friends at Oil Change International released a new report, which recalculates the basic math about climate change. Here’s my story about it in the New Republic. The basic gist is this: oil and gas fields and coal mines already in production contain enough carbon to carry us past the two degree mark.

That is to say, if we’re even remotely serious about stopping runaway climate change we can’t build any new fossil fuel infrastructure anywhere. The frontier of the fossil fuel industry, which has been expanding for three centuries, must be closed. Now.This is not ideology....

r1 28 girls every minute.
View in browser
Hey Paov,

This year alone, 13.5 million girls under the age of 18 will get married. That’s 28 girls every minute. These girls are more likely to drop out of school and become victims of marital abuse or rape, with little protection from their government.

That's why we've teamed up with youth activist Aristarick, Co-Founder of Youth for Change Tanzania, who is urging his government to raise the minimum marriage age to 18 for boys and girls.

Fifteen Years of Occupation:
Afghanistan Since the Invasion

Michael Skinner

7 October 2016 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan. Many Western leaders claimed the invasion, dubbed Operation Enduring Freedom, was a humanitarian intervention to liberate Afghans and especially Afghan women and girls from the brutal Taliban regime. However, the evidence demonstrates the results have been anything but humane or liberating.

The people truly liberated by the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan are the wealthy investors in the military-industrial complex and those betting on successfully extracting Afghan resources and developing the infrastructure of the New Silk Road.

The Failure of Humanitarian Intervention

Civilian casualties: Perhaps the crudest measure of the failure of the humanitarian intervention in Afghanistan is to count...

The Struggle at Standing Rock

The Struggle at Standing Rock:
Pipeline Protest, First Nations’ Uprising

"What white man can say I never stole his land or a penny of his money? Yet they say that I am a thief." -- Sitting Bull, Lakota Holy Man, Grand River.

For the past few months, an encampment has sprung up on the banks of the Cannonball River in North Dakota in opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline. The resistance has been led by the Standing Rock Sioux opposed to the routing of the $3.8-billion pipeline transporting oil from the Bakken oil fields through burial grounds and sacred sites under the Missouri River. Any break in the line would do enormous damage to the water supply and the historical territories of the Sioux. Hundreds of First Nations and tribes from...
