South African Workers Mobilize to Challenge Neoliberal Policies
Irvin Jim
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) Special National Congress in December 2013 resolved: "There is no chance of winning back the Alliance to what it was originally formed for, which was to drive a revolutionary programme for fundamental transformation of the country, with the Freedom Charter as the minimum platform to transform the South African economy."
Recent events have fully vindicated this view. The global capitalist system is in terminal crisis and continues to inflict great human and environmental stress, pain and destruction. The world working class is under attack; unemployment, poverty and inequality are on the rise, in the biggest global crisis of capitalism since the 1930s.
In South...

Southern Insurgency:
The Coming of the Global Working Class
Even as labour in the developed world seems to be in retreat, industrial struggle continues elsewhere, and with particular force in the Global South. In Southern Insurgency, Immanuel Ness provides a thorough and expert perspective of three key countries where workers are fighting the spread of unchecked industrial capitalism: China, India, and South Africa. In each case, he considers the broader historical forces in play, such as the effects of imperialism, the decline of the international union movement, class struggle, and the growing reserve of available labour. He then narrows his focus in each case on the specifics of the current grassroots insurgency: the militancy of miners in South Africa, new labour organizations in India, and the...

Today is International Democracy Day - a good time to think about how our democracy stacks up with democracy in other countries. We often think of democracy as black and white - either you’re a democracy, or you’re not.
But what if we talked about strong and weak democracies? Or shallow and deep democracies? When you look around the world you can see that while Canada is a democracy, our first-past-the post voting system makes our democracy weaker than many other countries.

Help make voting fair and democratic

Dear Friend,

We have joined together, and with many other citizen groups, because we need to work together – and we need your help now – to make Canada’s voting system more fair and democratic.

In my capacity as one of your regional directors, I have been assisting a new organization called Island Forest Futures with research to develop a vision for the forests and communities of Vancouver Island.
This vision, contained in the draft policy statement "The Future of Forests and Communities on Vancouver Island," proposes a strategy to optimize the ecological, social and economic potential of the island's forest resources and move beyond valley-by-valley conflicts, through an immediate transition from:
- old-growth logging to ecological management of second-growth forests;
- volume-based commodity exports to value-based production of high-quality wood products;
- capital-intensive to knowledge- and labour-intensive processes;
- corporate tenures on Crown land to community tenures administered by regional districts and First Nations.
I also would like to invite you...
