Labour Day: Signs of Renewal?

Evert Hoogers, Donald Swartz, Rosemary Warskett

Labour Day Weekend is upon us, and many union activists and their families will be out marching and picnicking, joining with brothers and sisters from other unions in a show of solidarity. While their participation is heartfelt there is no doubt many of them are asking what is there to celebrate? There are a few recent victories but not enough to prevent workers from concluding that the current Labour movement is in crisis.

Labour Day is recognized by most unions in Canada and the U.S. as a day to promote labour's role in the community. In 1894, it became a national holiday in Canada. The Canadian government was seeking to accommodate the Labour...

Bargaining Over Corporate Investment: Innovation or Trap?

Sam Gindin and Herman Rosenfeld

Ever since the sit-down strikes of the 1930s, the cycle of ‘Big Three’ auto bargaining has been a major economic and political event, an indicator of the progress of the class struggle in North America. If such interest has sagged of late, it charged back into the news with the aggressive declaration of Unifor's president, Jerry Dias, that winning new investments for Canada is at the top of the union's agenda in its current bargaining round with General Motors (GM), Ford and Chrysler. Dias followed up this challenge to management's right to unilaterally decide investments with the audacious warning that if these U.S.-based corporations don't deliver on bringing a fair share of investments...

This is your chance to meet Rihanna in New York City.

There are just three weeks to go until the Global Citizen Festival, and world leaders are deciding right now what they will commit to support children in conflict and crisis.

We want them to pledge big to the Education Cannot Wait fund for children in emergencies -- and two countries: Canada and France, are close to stepping up.

The Importance of the September 2nd General Strike

The Importance of the September 2nd General Strike

What every working Indian needs to know about the all-India trade union strike -- and why it matters

Since India embraced what trade unions call the LPG route to growth (that is liberalization, privatization and globalization) in 1991, the country has seen 16 general strikes. And the 17th all India workers’ strike falls on September 2nd. The last general strike, observed on 2 September 2015, saw participation from nearly 150 million workers -- that's half the population of the entire U.S., or more than the combined population of the UK, Canada and Australia. This year, the unions expect a better turnout given the controversial labour policies pursued by the Narendra Modi-led NDA government.

Why are the...

Corporate Media Lying about RCMP 'Bombing' of BC Legislature

r1

The Bridge News Service: Independent Media from Canada:

Media linked bombing to Canada's Muslim Community - which had NOTHING to do with it.

(July 31, 2016) The RCMP and Federal Government created a fake 'terror bombing' in Victoria BC in 2013. Then they and the media linked the attack to Canada's Muslim Community, which had NOTHING to do with it. The 'attack' was planned and carried out by the RCMP. Nothing would have happened without the RCMP. That's what Judge Catherine Bruce ruled last week. The Harper Government is also implicated.

Since the 'bombing', our Government and Corporate Media have spread fear, anger, hate, and division in Canada. Muslim Canadians were the main targets ... but ALL of us were the targets of this evil act. Our rulers WANT to divide us and distract us from the real issues we face. And they do it, by 'creating another enemy'. How many thousands of times were the words 'Terror, Bombing, and Muslim' put together in the same sentence by our Media and the RCMP?

Canada's Media always say vaccines are safe and effective. Neither statement is really true. But vaccines ARE very profitable.
