Thompson, Linebaugh has taught in New York University, Harvard University and the University of Toledo.

Peter Linebaugh was invited by Professor Shahrzad Mojab as part of her on-going Marxist Reading Group where the works of Linebaugh were read in the last two years. Part of the Union?
What Should Socialists Argue in the EU Referendum?

Can socialists take a principled position in relation to the UK's European Union membership referendum on 23 June, or should we wish ‘a plague on both your houses’? Christina Delistathi puts the case to ‘leave’, Charlie Hore for a ‘remain’ vote, and Rob Owen for a ‘radical abstention’.

Left Exit -- Not Just a Vote

Christina Delistathi

The referendum to stay in or leave the EU is ripping the Tories apart, but has also opened up an intense debate on the Left with many people arguing to vote to stay. They fear that the leave vote is mobilising racists, that the end of free movement will make it harder for migrant workers from...

VIDEO: Disturbing the Peace

We've been breaking news about the Site C hydro dam in northeastern B.C. for a couple years. Today's video features Site C Joint Review Panel Chair Harry Swain explaining why the B.C. government has failed us with this expensive, destructive and unnecessary project. We also experience the heartbreaking realities of farmers and families being forced from their land to make way for the hydro megaproject.

This is a story about a place that is out of sight, out of mind. Few traditional news outlets have the resources to send reporters out into the field any more, but thanks to support from people like you we are able to cover stories like this one that have been overlooked.

Please watch and share.

Thanks,

Emma Gilchrist
Executive Director

Five Years of Progress for Domestic Workers, But Much Still to be Done - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 16 June 2016 (ITUC OnLine): In the five years since the International Labour Organization adopted Convention 189 on Domestic Workers, governments in nearly 50 countries have updated their legislation to provide better employment protection for domestic workers, and 22 countries have already ratified the Convention. An estimated 15 million workers now have improved rights and protections at work, included the right to at least one day off per week, doubling or even tripling of the applicable minimum wage as well as access to social protection. Dozens of new unions for domestic workers have been formed since 2011, with a total membership of some 100,000.

Turkey: European and International Trade Unions Demand Immediate release of DISK General Secretary - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 17 June 2016 (ITUC OnLine): European and international trade union organisations have expressed their shock and anger at the news that Arzu Çerkezoğlu, General Secretary of their Turkish affiliate DISK, has been arrested at Istanbul airport as she was about to take a flight to Germany to visit a relative in hospital.

Police claim that she was arrested because she allegedly insulted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a speech she made on 31 August last year. The ETUC, ITUC and European Public Services Union are demanding her immediate release and the withdrawal of the bizarre charge against her.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said “Thousands of people, including journalists, trade unionists, public figures, even sportspeople now face legal attacks for insulting President Erdogan. The real insult however is to common sense and to fundamental freedoms, with the President’s dictatorial approach threatening the very foundations of democracy.”

Public Exposures: the art-activism of Condé and Beveridge

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 28 May 2016

Public Exposures:
the art-activism of Condé and Beveridge

The Public Exposures symposium (May 27, 28, 29) brought together participants from diverse communities and working sectors -- practicing artists, community activists, union members, educators and students. Inspired by Condé and Beveridge’s innovative art, and their strategic activism, the broad aims of the symposium were:

* To reflect on issues and strategies that they and many others are engaging -- specifically in the areas of artists’ rights, and art and labour -- and more broadly around needs for social, economic, and environmental justice.
* To energize grassroots collaborations -- renewing/strengthening existing links -- seeding new possibilities for artists and activists working in the public sphere.

Introductions by Jim Miller and Min Sook Lee; and Caroline Langill. Keynote...
