The Austerity Agenda in Sheep’s Clothing

John Clarke

As we go into the New Year with Justin Trudeau's Liberal Government in place, it's worth noting that the struggle against poverty in Toronto now unfolds with a complete set of federal, provincial and municipal regimes all seeking to position themselves politically as moderate if not progressive. This has particular implications and poses particular challenges in terms of effectively resisting austerity, poverty and social abandonment.

There is, of course, an implication in the last sentence I just used. At none of the levels of government we face can we seriously imagine that we are dealing with anything other than continuation and deepening of the agenda of austerity. That agenda is an escalating, internationally determined fact of...

In Memoriam - Ellen Meiksins Wood 1942-2016

The death of Ellen Meiksins Wood on January 14, 2016 represents an immense loss for socialists everywhere. As a frequent contributor to the Socialist Register since her first essay in 1980, special co-editor of the 1995 volume on Why Not Capitalism, and a member of the Register’s editorial collective from 1996 to 2009, her depth of socialist commitment, theoretical originality and profound insight may best be gauged from this excerpt from her essay on "The uses and abuses of ‘civil society’" in the Socialist Register 1990: The Retreat of the Intellectuals.

The Uses and Abuses of ‘Civil Society’

Ellen Meiksins Wood

We live in curious times. Just when intellectuals of the Left in the West have a rare...

Dear Friends,

As another year passes – what kind of Canada, what kind of governments and big businesses do you want to pass on to the next generations in your family – to your kids, nieces, nephews or grandchildren?

What kind of country do you want Canada to be in 2 years when we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday?

Do you want your family to continue to live in a Canada run by the many dishonest, unethical, secretive, unrepresentative and wasteful governments and...

The Clock Is Ticking

r1

Friends,

Tomorrow, the next round of National Energy Board hearings for the Trans-Mountain Kinder Morgan pipeline are set to start. With them, Prime Minister Trudeau and this government will be breaking their first big climate promise.

The new government campaigned against the broken NEB reviews of tar sands pipelines. But now, under pressure from big oil, they’re letting both the Kinder Morgan and Energy East reviews proceed -- with no consideration of climate change, without listening to communities, and without respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The good news is that the Minister of Natural Resources, Jim Carr, has the power to stop the Kinder Morgan hearings from going forward. Not only that: right now he is meeting with the rest of the cabinet for the first time in 2016.

Make a phone call to Jim Carr to tell him to stop NEB pipeline hearings until the new review rules are in...

The "New Turkey's" Test With Freedom of Thought and Expression

A Socialist Project e-bulletin .... No. 1207 .... January 18, 2016

The “New Turkey's” Test With Freedom of Thought and Expression:
Resurgent Fascism?

Kansu Yildirim

The petition by the “Academicians for Peace” in Turkey has resulted in an assault against the academic community of the country, which resembles the practices of the military junta of the September 12 1980, coup d’état. The petition itself and the reactions for/against it have gained a different momentum following the increasing pressure by the AKP (the governing political power) via various channels such as university administrations, legal bodies and partisan media organizations.

Each indictment such of “disloyalty,” “mandate support” and “treason” directed at the academicians by the Turkish President Erdoğan, the Prime Minister Davutoğlu, several ministers and other officials, have brought new accusations and threats against the academicians that...
