The capitalist model for journalism is failing

The news this week that Rogers will send 200 of its TV, radio and publication workers packing isjust the latest in a series of corporate media contractions that are bringing the entire system to the brink of collapse and forcing hundreds of media workers out of jobs across the country.

Just five companies -- Bell, Rogers, Shaw, Quebecor, and TELUS -- control nearly 90 per cent of Canada's media landscape.

Palestinian Popular Resistance:
Building (BDS)/ Student Movement

A new generation of Palestinians is marching on the footsteps of previous generations, rising up against Israel’s brutal, decades-old system of occupation, settler colonialism and apartheid. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have joined demonstrations taking place in dozens of cities across historic Palestine and in refugee camps in neighbouring Arab countries. Palestinians continue to struggle for their fundamental rights of freedom, self-determination, equality, and a right to return. As the resistance on the ground intensifies, university campuses remain central to building on the Palestinian solidarity movement. The call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) has recently made tremendous gains, in particular on university campuses and academic institutions. Both the American Anthropological Association (AAA) and the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA)...

Upcoming February Events

Hello comrades and friends!

We've had some fantastic events this past January! Let's keep up the momentum as we dive into more complex topics like the Russian Revolution and the class nature of fascism.

All events will be held at QV Cafe (1701 Government St).
The links lead to the literature being discussed - prior reading is encouraged but not required. Discussion is open to everybody in a safe environment and every opinion will be heard.
Here are the four events we will be doing in February

February 4th @ 7:00PM - Fascism: What It Is and How To Fight It

Is Donald Trump a fascist? How about ISIS? The Ukrainian militia forces? The recent rise in movements linked to racism and xenophobia should be concerning to everyone. To better combat the increasingly reactionary politics of the right-wing, we must understand the class forces that lead to fascism. The pamphlet Fascism: What It Is and...

THANK YOU!!!

Dear friend and supporter,

This year marks the 13th anniversary of my husband Mohamed Harkat's arrest under a secret trial Security Certificate. Moe was detained behind bars for 43 months and has been held under several types of house-arrest/bail conditions (the toughest in Canadian history) over the past 13 years. All that, without ever being charged or knowing the so-called evidence against him.

During the middle of the election campaign, Moe was suddenly issued his inadmissibility letter under a Harper government, kickstarting a deportation process against Moe that has him fighting forced return to Algeria, where he is at great risk of detention, torture or death because of the never-proven allegations against him.

YOU CAN HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE-YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE!!!

Quebec Unions Debate a Settlement

Ashley Smith

Quebec public-sector unions organized in the Common Front reached a tentative agreement with the government of Premier Philippe Couillard right before the holidays on December 17. The agreement followed an explosive fall filled with rotating regional public-sector strikes and anti-austerity protests that culminated in the largest general strike in Quebec's history, when more than 400,000 workers stayed off the job and shut down most government services on December 9.

The wave of militancy forced the Liberal Party's Philippe Couillard to back down from his most extreme demands for concessions in negotiations with the unions. Trumpeting the need for a zero deficit budget, he had offered only a 3 per cent wage increase over a five-year contract, while...
