Canada's Richest Family Supports Current Voting System

The Bridge News Service: Independent Media from Canada

Canada's Richest Family Likes our Current Voting System
... because it works for them.

Their Newspaper, The Globe and Mail, likes it too.

(Jan 9, 2016): The Globe and Mail is owned by the Thomson family. The Globe began its Jan. 6 editorial with what I'd call a lie ... "Over the past decade, 3 Canadian provinces - BC, PEI, and Ontario - have held four referendums on scrapping First Past The Post. Each of these propositions went down to defeat."

Now, that statement is 'true', but it's not 'really true'. The truth is that in B.C. in 2005, 57% voted to CHANGE to a Proportional Voting system ... 57% voted for PR, BUT OUR RULERS WOULDN'T ALLOW IT.

Turkey: Workers Killed and Arbitrary Detained by Turkish Security Forces - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 22th January 2016 (ITUC Online): The ITUC has strongly condemned the killing of workers and citizens by Turkish security forces.

Security forces surrounded several towns and villages in the South East of Turkey, where according to the information received by the ITUC, Mehmet Kaplan, a worker employed by the Cizre Municipality and a member of DİSK/Genel-İş Union, was shot in front of his house. About a month ago, another member of this trade union, Ramazan Uysal, was also killed and three others were arbitrarily detained. People who tried to pick the body up from the street were shot at. More than 10 people are severely injured including a journalist.

“It is the government’s primary responsibility to safeguard the lives and the physical integrity of all Turkish citizens,” said Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary. “Once again trade unionists have been killed defending workers’ rights. True justice...

The repression is getting worse

The Israeli government is hoping that no-one will notice. The Israeli government is hoping that their attacks on human rights activists will go unchecked. We can’t let that happen. We need to show them that the world is watching.

logo Take Action

Human rights activists are being targeted by the Israeli Goverment, for daring to speak up for the human rights of Palestinians.

Will you tell the Israeli Government to free Ezra Nawi, Guy Butavia, and Nasser Nawajah?

. TAKE ACTION . . .

About Ezra Nawi. He’s a long-time Israeli activist who season after season stands with the Palestinians of the South Hebron hills while settlers (supported by Israeli soldiers) try in every way to drive them off their land and destroy their livelihoods.

After being spied upon by a right-wing organization and smeared on national television, he was arrested, detained, and denied access to a lawyer for four days. With a gag-order on the case, we asked you to help raise the alarm. Thousands of you contacted Israeli Embassies around the world to press for his release -- thank you!

But the repression is getting worse.

Can People's Power Save the Bolivarian Revolution?

Rightists’ election victory poses major threat to Venezuela's advances

Richard Fidler

Seventeen years after Hugo Chávez was elected Venezuela's President for the first time, the supporters of his Bolivarian Revolution, now led by President Nicolás Maduro, suffered their first major defeat in a national election in the December 6 elections to the country's parliament, the National Assembly.

Coming only two weeks after the victory of right-wing candidate Mauricio Macri in Argentina's presidential election, it was a stunning setback to the "process of change" in Latin America that Chávez had spearheaded until his premature death from cancer in 2013. The opposition majority in the new parliament threatens to undo some of the country's major social and economic...

Right wing newspapers take over media markets in four more cities

First, the Halifax Chronicle Herald management locked out its workers. Then we learned that Global News is being sold to a company that specializes in children's entertainment. And now Postmedia, Canada's biggest news chain, has announced mass layoffs and a newsroom merger that puts Sun News editors at the helm of several respected local newspapers.

The free press in Canada is under attack.

This one's a head scratcher

Canada is considering "scrubbing" a provision in CETA allowing multinational corporations to sue governments over pesky regulations, but will go ahead with similar provision in the TPP.
Please share widely! Thanks.

To Change the Heart and Soul
How Elites Contained the Climate Justice Movement

Herbert Docena

"The object is to change the heart and soul" — Margaret Thatcher.

On the final day of the UN summit (COP21) held in Paris in December 2015, thousands of people defied a ban on public gatherings by converging at a boulevard leading to the business district in La Défense to denounce the new climate agreement that government negotiators were about to sign and celebrate at the conference venue in Le Bourget, 20 kilometres away. Hoping to counter governments’ attempts to control the narrative regarding the summit, they gathered behind giant inflatable ‘cobblestones’ and a red banner proclaiming "System change not climate change!"

Departing from some other environmentalist groups,...
