Ontario is indiscriminately dropping a herbicide linked with cancer on its pristine forests. It endangers local residents and wildlife while devastating entire areas.

Some critics have compared Monsanto's VisionMAX to Agent Orange. Join SumOfUs supporter David Nagy and tell Ontario to stop spraying its forests with a deadly herbicide.

Help Us Crash the Federal Leaders Debate

r1

Friends,

This Thursday, the federal party leaders will gather in Calgary for a debate on Canada’s economy. Any conversation about the economy also needs to be a conversation about climate change and the tar sands, but with the federal leaders ignoring climate change this election, we need your help.

Politicians, journalists and tens of thousands of people will be watching the hashtag #globedebate on Thursday, and we have a plan to make sure that they all hear our message on climate. We've set up something called a "Thunderclap", an online tool that let’s us gather and deliver hundreds of tweets all at once.

Click here to help us virtually "crash" the leaders debate, right as the candidates take their places behind the podiums.

A rising tide of actions has been...

For a Regional Housing First Strategy

NationBuilder r1 Housing First

Friend --

I hope you are well.

I am writing to you today to provide an update on efforts to eliminate homelessness in our city and region.

Controversy during the summer over a proposed designated temporary tenting area has produced a healthy dialogue over how best to respond to the homelessness emergency and provide a basic level of decency and security for every member of our community.

City Council heard that many members of the public favour investments in permanent housing rather than interim measures such as temporary tenting areas.

As a result, I have developed a proposal with Mayor Lisa Helps, Councillor Jeremy Loveday and Capital Regional Hospital District Chair Dave Howe for a Regional Housing First Strategy — to build 367 units of housing with supports by 2018.

The construction cost works out to $11 per household per year, if levied regionally. You can Read more: For a Regional Housing First Strategy

Turkey and its Kurds at War:
Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Personal Quest for Survival

Sungur Savran

The Kurdish town of Cizre, a settlement with a population of approximately 150 thousand souls in Southeastern Turkey, is now under siege by the Turkish armed forces and the so-called "special operation force" of the police for a second time, after a previous one-week long siege was lifted for an interlude of two days. Around-the-clock curfew is accompanied by power cuts and the interruption of all means of communication including mobile telephones and the Internet. The evidence that came out when the first round of siege was lifted attests to a terrible human drama. Over 30 civilians are dead, ranging from a 35-day old infant to a 75-year old man....

The Great Unraveling: with Chris Hedges

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 3 September 2015

The Great Unraveling: with Chris Hedges

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges joins us for an evening in Toronto to speak about "The Great Unraveling."

Revolutions come in waves and cycles. We are again riding the crest of a revolutionary epic, much like 1848 or 1917, from the Arab Spring to movements against austerity in Greece to the Occupy Movement. In his newest book, Wages of Rebellion, Chris Hedges investigates what social and psychological factors cause revolution, rebellion, and resistance. Drawing on an ambitious overview of prominent philosophers, historians and literary figures, he shows not only the harbingers of a coming crisis but also the nascent seeds of rebellion. Hedges’ message is clear: popular uprisings in the United States and around the world are inevitable in the face...

Can Jeremy Corbyn Redeem the Labour Party?

Can Jeremy Corbyn Redeem the Labour Party?

Interview with Leo Panitch

"Of political parties claiming socialism to be their aim, the Labour Party has always been one of the most dogmatic -- not about socialism, but about the parliamentary system." That's how Ralph Miliband opened his classic 1961 text Parliamentary Socialism, a critical analysis of the party that most of the British left wanted to capture.

Miliband was skeptical of that plan, as was his later collaborator Leo Panitch. But during the great upsurges of the early 1980s -- which saw the growth of a radical Labour left represented by Tony Benn and others, as well as the miners’ strike of 1984--85 -- both thinkers resisted the "new revisionism" of intellectuals like Eric Hobsbawm...
