Social Justice Film Night

Social Justice Film Night Presents:
"Going Against The Grain"
A film by Bilal Yousef
7:00pm Thursday, October 16 2994 Douglas St. (BCGEU Hall) Victoria, BC
Admission by Donation
This Al Jazeera World Report, “Going Against the Grain,” follows Levy on one of his assignments in Hebron, and meets some of the ordinary Palestinians whose lives he has described in his regular column for Haaretz.
He has made weekly visits, over the past three decades, to the occupied Palestinian territories, describing what he sees – plainly and without propaganda.
For some Israelis, he is seen as a brave disseminator of the truth. But many others condemn him as a propagandist for Hamas. And his columns for the Tel Aviv-based Haaretz newspaper have made him, arguably, one of the most hated men in Israel.

PLEASE SIGN NEW PETITION AND RALLY AT THE LEGISLATURE OCT. 6 TO PROTECT GRACE ISLET

You probably saw the on-line petition this summer calling on the CRD to expropriate Grace islet to preserve the First Nations cemetery at Grace Islet. The CRD decided not to expropriate, but to continue to advocate for action by the Province, and our focus for the last few months has been on Minister Thomson and Premier Clark. Despite public demonstrations, letter-writing, direct action and meetings with government, construction of the house on top of the burial cairns continues.

We hope you will help convince the BC government to act by signing another on-line petition, this time calling on the Province to acquire Grace Islet for the purpose of protecting the First Nations burial ground and allowing its remediation, stewardship and ceremonial use. It will be presented to the Legislature, possibly as soon as tomorrow. The more signatures the better, so PLEASE sign today and share the petition at http://you.leadnow.ca/p/SaveGrace so we can show broad support for expropriation of Grace Islet by the province.

Also, please join us for a Rally on the front lawn of the Provincial Legislature in Victoria’s Inner Harbour, starting at noon Monday, October 6, the first day of the fall sitting of the Legislative Assembly. Together with Chiefs, Indigenous Leaders, Elders and supporters we’ll send a strong, clear message to Government and British Columbians, calling for a respectful resolution to end the desecration of the First Nations burial ground on Grace Islet.

We need your help to get the word out! Please encourage friends and supporters to join in too and help us make a BIG statement to government that First Nations issues and basic respect for people’s final resting places are important, and that Grace Islet deserves protection.

Due to ceremonies for opening the Legislature, we will be on the lawn by the fountain, and signs will be very important to get our message across. Please feel free to make signs this weekend and bring them to the rally. Paint on cardboard or felt pen on poster board works well, and some suggested quotes are at the end of this message.

Sorry about the short notice, as this has recently come to my attention.

Stop war preparations!

Halt the militarization of the Pacific Ocean!

Demonstration to oppose the Maritime Security Challenges conference in Victoria

Monday October 6, 5:15pm, Government at View Street

Victoria is the site of the 2014 Maritime Security Challenges, which brings together senior brass from the US, Canadian, British, Japanese and other navies to plan the further militarization of the Pacific Ocean.

The website of the conference (www.mscconference.com) sets out the agenda in clear terms: “a naval arms race is underway” in the Pacific. At the conference the commander of the US Pacific Fleet will set out strategic shifts involved in what he calls the "American rebalance towards the Pacific”. The question he’ll put to the delegates is “What role will...

Friend --

Since I was elected as one of your representatives on Victoria City Council and the Capital Regional District Board three years ago, I have worked hard every day standing up for what we believe in. Together we've made real progress on important issues including:

  • Expanding parks, trails and greenways for walking and cycling;
  • Advocating for affordable housing and a fair deal for everyone;
  • Pursuing neighbourhood-appropriate development that respects Victoria's heritage;
  • Supporting community centres, seniors, libraries and the arts;
  • Providing cost-effective public services with open, accountable local government.

PeerNetBC Historical Tour

PeerNetBC News

PeerNetBC Historical Tour Project

Following up the success from our citizenU project, PeerNetBC is once again offering our highly requested Historical Tour of Vancouver. This is done through a social justice lens, looking at flashpoints in Vancouver's storied history.
On this free tour, we’ll explore some places in Vancouver that you might not have encountered before. We’ll explore themes of diversity, equality and inclusion in Vancouver’s past, present and future. And we’ll ask some tough questions about what we can all do to make Vancouver a better place.

The stories we’ll share are just a few small pieces of Vancouver’s history and culture. We hope that you’ll share your own stories as well. What do you love about Vancouver? What do you want to change? Imagine that it’s fifty years from now—what stories will be told on a tour like this?

There will be 3 stops on the tour, leaving from the SFU Harbor Centre campus at 515 west hastings and returning to there at the end of the tour. This tour includes a FREE bagged lunch.

Please register by Wed, Oct. 15th due to limited of spots, as registration is on a first come first serve basis.

Please contact PeerNetBC at 604-733-6186 or email us This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have any questions about the tour.

[Uvic-sustainability] News and Evnets for week of Sept 29th

NEWS

The Victoria Car Share Co-op has announced plans to merge with Vancouver’s Modo car sharing network. This will give Victoria car share members, including those with UVic memberships, access to fob technology, doing away with lock boxes for keys and manual trip entries, access to newer vehicles and easy access to the Metro Vancouver fleet when visiting there. Watch for more details on this coming in the next few months.

A team of researchers led by UVic’s Quentin Mackie (Anthropology) and Allison Proctor (Mech Engineering) are using an automated underwater vehicle to survey ancient riverbeds in Gwaii Haannas National Park Reserve. They believe they have uncovered evidence of the earliest human habitation of Canada – perhaps 14,000 years old. See Vancouver Sun and UVic News.

Victoria’s 24 year old Joseph Boutilier has completed his 5.5 month trek from Victoria to Ottawa...
