NEWS
Friday is the official opening Mystic Market, UVic’s new campus food outlet. Not only will it be serving up healthy and locally-sourced food choices with a distinctive west coast ambiance, it also promises to be our campus’s first “zero-waste” facility. As much as possible, all food waste and other waste from the food prep areas and of the customer trays will be recycled or composted. Check out the photo and story in Saanich News.
Lots of interesting on campus and off campus volunteer opportunities coming up:
A new University of Victoria-led radioactivity monitoring network is looking for volunteer “citizen scientists” along the BC coast to collect water samples and share science-based information on ocean health within their communities. The InFORM network is monitoring low-level radioactivity that is drifting across the Pacific from the 2011 tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear...

Urgent: Harper could pass Canada-China FIPA deal TODAY

This deal would allow China’s massive companies to sue Canadian governments in secret tribunals if we make decisions that put Canadian interests ahead of their corporate profits – restricting Canadians from making democratic decisions about our economy, environment and energy.[2]
It gets worse: If Prime Minister Harper approves this international investors’ deal it could bind us for 31 years.
As you may know, the Hupacasath First Nation are using their constitutionally protected legal rights to challenge this deal in court. The court case is still in progress, and the court has not yet released its decision on the Hupacasath’s appeal. If Harper ratifies FIPA it would show total disrespect for Canada's courts and the the judicial process.
We know that many Conservative MPs are deeply uncomfortable with the secretive and extreme Canada-China investor deal,[3] and we need to turn up the pressure right now and demand they stop Harper from ratifying this terrible deal.
Can you join our emergency phone-call action today to turn up the pressure to stop FIPA? Here’s how to make your call…

Salmon Confidential is a new film on the government cover up of what is killing BC’s wild salmon. When biologist Alexandra Morton discovers BC’s wild salmon are testing positive for dangerous European salmon viruses associated with salmon farming worldwide, a chain of events is set off by government to suppress the findings. Tracking viruses, Morton moves from courtrooms, into British Columbia’s most remote rivers, Vancouver grocery stores and sushi restaurants. The film documents Morton’s journey as she attempts to overcome government and industry roadblocks thrown in her path and works to bring critical information to the public in time to save BC’s wild salmon. The film provides surprising insight into the inner workings of government agencies, as...Social Justice Film Night

Dear supporter of the Palestinian struggle,
This summer, Israel carried out another brutal massacre of Palestinians. More than 2,100 Palestinians in the besieged Gaza strip were killed and hundreds of thousands more were left displaced as Israel deliberately targeted homes, schools and hospitals.
Now Israel is bidding to host matches for the UEFA European Football Championship tournament in 2020 in Jerusalem.
TAKE ACTION - Tell UEFA to Show Israel the Red Card
Israel has launched a war on football in Palestine: footballers have been killed, stadiums bombed and players have been refused permission to travel to matches.
Among those killed in Israel’s recent massacre were Ahmad Muhammad...

Vancouver Canada Blocks Israeli Ship: Tremendous Victory
In a four-day standoff pitting human rights groups and organized labor against Israeli shipping giant Zim, the giant was defeated today in Vancouver, Canada.
The huge container ship Zim Djibouti first docked at the high-tech Deltaport facility on September 5, only to discover that the workers had agreed to respect a picket line set up by human rights advocates. The coalition of picketers, under the name Block the Boat Vancouver, were trying to prevent the unloading and loading of the ship, as a solidarity protest against Israel's 47-year blockade of the port of Gaza and the recent Israeli sttack on Gaza that killed more than 2000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, as well as 72 Israelis, almost all soldiers.
The
ship then returned...

We hope you can participate in this action to protect Grace Islet, joining Salt Spring residents and First Nations to apply pressure on the province of BC to act without delay. Please share!
____________
RALLY TO PROTECT GRACE ISLET -Please join us at the Deputy Minister's office at 820 Blanshard St. in Victoria from 11:30-12:30 on Wednesday Sept. 10.
We’re fed up with the provincial government’s disrespect and mis-handling of Grace Islet burial site, and are determined to rally in support of the local Chiefs’ demands for an immediate Stop Work order. Together with Chief Vern Jacks and other First Nation leaders and elders, we’re repeating the call for Minister Thomson to reverse his decision allowing residential construction on a First Nations cemetery, and to designate Grace Islet a heritage site NOW.
We’ll then walk the few blocks to the Legislature lawn and continue our rally, with the big NoHouseHere banner, drumming and songs.
Please come and show solidarity with First Nations.

UVic Printing Services has officially switched to using wheat paper as the house stock. This paper is made from 60% wheat straw residue from the wheat farming process, 35% FSC certified recycled wood fibre and 5% FSC certified plantation fibre, and produces 40% less carbon emissions than traditional wood papers. Compared to conventional paper, one box of wheat paper conserves an entire tree, which means Printing Services will conserve 600 trees per year! Find out more from the Printing Services website.
Speaking of (not) saving trees - Move over Brazil! A new report shows that Canada is the world’s leader in degradation of virgin forests. “Canada is the number one in the world for the total area of the loss of intact forest landscapes since 2000,” Peter Lee, of Forest Watch Canada. The main drivers of the loss are logging, fires, and energy and resource...
