Dear Friend,

In times of crisis and tragedy, our independent reporting on Parliament Hill is more important than ever.

Our journalists act like public watchdogs for us. As rabble.ca’s Parliamentary Bureau Chief Karl Nerenberg writes: “all of us, and our civil liberties, may be the third victim of Wednesday's violent events."

That’s why our Parliamentary Bureau is solely funded by your donations. Unlike the mainstream media, they report directly and ethically to us on the issues that matter most.

Kinder Morgan in Burnaby: Stop the Bullying!

How can you support efforts to stand up to Kinder Morgan in Burnaby?

Burnaby Mountain opposition

Hi PAOV,

Right now, a diverse and dedicated group of Burnaby residents are making a stand against the Texan pipeline giant Kinder Morgan in a protected area on Burnaby Mountain. Several people have been served injunction papers, which threaten to strip them of their material worth if they get in the way of Kinder Morgan’s tar sands development. They are facing allegations of trespassing in their own public park.

Like us, these concerned citizens don’t want to see their beautiful conservation area hacked up for Kinder Morgan’s tar sands pipeline plans. They care about their community and parks, about the threat of an oil spill and about the impact this project will have on climate change. But instead of engaging in a meaningful discussion with local residents, Kinder Morgan responded with bullying – and a very expensive lawsuit.

So what can you do to help?

Turning the Tide 2015

Hi fellow paddlers!
After an amazing paddle this past summer the turning the tide team would like to reach out to all participants and see who is interested in organizing for the 2015 paddle, as it is that time of year!
We will be hosting a screening of the movie we made for 2014 on Nov 21st in Victoria (location to decided on). The screening will be a fundraiser for the joint sierra club and raven trust campaign to support First Nations court fees in opposition to the pipeline pull-together.ca.
We encourage people to use the movie as a fundraiser for the same campaign, if they have different veunues.
On Nov.21 we will host the fundraiser in Victoria. We are looking for volunteers to help organize this event. The event will also serve as a kickoff/ brainstorming session for what Turning The Tide 2015 can look like, and to get an idea of who would like help organize.
Our next planning meeting will take place at QV Cafe in Victoria (government and Fisgard) on Sunday Oct. 26 at 7-8 pm. We will speak specifically about the Movie screening fundraiser, and begin to develop an idea of what TTT will look like in 2015. We hope to SEA you there.
Here is a link to the video trailer, we look forward to hearing from you!http://turningthetide.ca/

[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for the Week of Nov 3rd

NEWS

You may have heard that Naomi Klein has a new book out called “This Changes Everything.” Klein argues in her book that a stable climate is impossible within the form of capitalism that currently governs us. SFU prof, Mark Jaccard, recently published a critical review of that book. Jaccard took issue with Klein’s provocative critique of capitalism. The economist and professor from the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University wrote a response to Jaccard, which was pre-published on this website.

Now the debate is coming to UVic. Wednesday November 5th at 4:30pm in the David Turpin Building A104a. The panel discussion will involve Will Horter, Executive Director of...

Hello PAOV,

Here at the Wilderness Committee, autumn is one of our favourite times of the year.

Why? Because it’s time for us to start showing off our new Endangered Wilderness and Wildlife calendars!

These calendars are a well-loved tradition that allows us to highlight some of our most important wilderness and wildlife campaigns, featuring amazing images from Canada’s top nature photographers, along with maps and details about wild areas and species under threat.

Our 2015 Canada’s Endangered Wilderness calendar includes snapshots from Manitoba’s Duck Mountain Provincial Park, Hudson Bay polar bear habitat, BC’s awe-inspiring ancient rainforests and the beautiful Peace River Valley. Our 2015 Canada’s Endangered Wildlife calendar features striking photographs of iconic species at risk such as the harlequin duck, polar bear, mountain caribou and killer whale.

World Fed Friday Talk for October

World Federalist talks resume this week, with another of Bill Pearce's enlightening talks on the Middle East:

"Was the Palestinian State Dead at its Birth?"

Can there be a reconciliation between a Zionist Israel that sees itself as rightfully reclaiming its homeland and views Palestinians as homicidal bombers and a Palestine that views Israel as colonists and occupiers?

Bill Pearce will explore this question and the steps that must be taken by Israel and the international community to make statehood a reality for the Palestinian people.

[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for week of Oct 28th

NEWS

A wholehearted thank you and congratulations to Rita Fromholt for her hard work and passion acting as Sustainability Coordinator at the UVic Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability for over five years. Rita took the lead in GHG and climate reporting, improving sustainable transportation on campus, and engaging with students, faculty, and community members to create a more sustainable campus and community environment. We wish her all the best in her new role with the Green Party of BC. Thanks Rita, you will be missed!

This week the provincial government released a concerning video on the science of LNG, representing the gas in a manner reminiscent of a grade–school science experiment. See the video on the Vancouver Sun website. According to a report from the Pembina Institute, the government’s current trajectory for BC’s LNG industry could double BC’s GHG emissions by 2020, bringing them almost up to par with Alberta’s tar sands emissions. Given the rate at which we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels to stay within a maximum 2-degree rise in climate in order to lessen the risk of experiencing catastrophic runaway global warming, their choice to omit the climate impacts of LNG in the video negligent at best.

UVic students Peter Gibbs and Tristan Ryan were featured on CFAX radio last week discussing the vibrant Divest UVic campaign on campus that is calling on the university to withdraw its investments from the fossil fuel industry. At the UVSS AGM on Oct 16th an unprecedented amount of student support voted in favour of holding a referendum on divestment in the spring. Check out the Martlet for more details.

On campus, UVic’s very first Free Store is officially opening as of next Monday November 3rd! The UVSS, who is operating the store, is soliciting donations. If you have any old stuff that is still useful, but you don’t need anymore, please consider bringing it to the Free Store in the Student Union Building on Monday November 3rd. Items include:

  • - Books
  • - CD’s, Records, Tapes, Vinyl
  • - Office Supplies
  • - Kitchenware
  • - Small to medium electronic devices/appliances in working condition

No large items and no clothing (at least for now) please!

A number of great sustainability events in the community and on campus over the next week. On Thursday Oct 29th The Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability is working with the Institute for Studies and Innovation in Community-University Engagement to host a workshop focused on research and engagement in the community, followed by a film screening and panel discussion on Reaching Blue: Finding Hope Beneath the Surface in the evening. More info in the events section.
