NEWS:
This week UVic President, Jamie Cassels, was quoted heavily in an op-ed written by the founders of the Free the Children Network on the legacy of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, India. In the early 1990s Cassel's wrote a seminal work on multi-national corporate responsibility called The Uncertain Promise of Law: Lessons from Bhopal, which argued that the parent companies could be held responsible when a subsidiary is shown to be negligent. The 30th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster is coming up this December 2nd.
The op-ed mentions two novel cases in Canada were the actions of multi-national subsidiaries are being used to hold the parent company accountable. One case was brought against

Subject: Take action now: Tell the UN not to reward Israel for Gaza massacre
International donors have pledged $5.4 billion to rebuild Gaza after Israel’s 50-day assault last summer that killed 2,254 Palestinians, including 538 children, and caused widespread destruction.
But studies show that at least 45% of the aid pledged by international donors will go to the Israeli economy.
Take action: Tell the UN: Don’t reward Israel for Gaza massacre
The companies that are set to rake in profits providing materials for the reconstruction of Gaza are corporate criminals. Companies like Nesher and ReadyMix pillage Palestinian natural resources and participate in the construction of illegal settlements.
It is time the UN feel the extent of public outcry as details emerge of the UN’s complicity in...

CANADIAN HEROES STAND IN BURNABY ...

The Bridge News Service

Citizens Stand Against Pipeline Through Park Q. Why does The Media call citizens 'protesters' -
when they are 'heroes'?
A. Because the Corporations own the media -
and the corporations hate heroes.
Hundreds of Canadians are facing arrest in Burnaby B.C., part of the city of Greater Vancouver. American Oil Giant Kinder-Morgan has forced the arrests of dozens of citizens who stand for the planet and against the corporate vandalism of a Burnaby Park. Kinder Morgan wants to put a pipeline through the park - to move TarSands oil from Alberta to the BC coast.
The City Governments of Burnaby and Vancouver oppose Kinder-Morgan. Citizens are being forced into civil disobedience - because Corporate controlled federal and provincial politicians are allowing the company to drill and cut down trees in a city park.
Canada's Corporate Media, as usual, stands with the destroyers of the planet. It's up to us Canadians to hold the media and the politicians accountable for their ongoing betrayal of our country and our planet.

LNG, fracking and B.C.s energy future

The Council of Canadians and the GVTA Social Justice Committee are organizing a public forum against Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals and fracking on November 26 in Victoria.
The public forum will feature Vancouver-based Council of Canadians regional organizer Leila Darwish, as well as Damien Gillis, the co-director of the documentaryFractured Land, and Jeremy Loveday, a Canadian performance poet with a global following.
The Facebook event page says, "The public has heard lots of promises about the economic benefits of a proposed LNG industry, powered by fracking in northeast BC. But are these claims credible? And what sort of environmental trade-offs would the industry bring? From the frackfields of northeastern BC to the many proposed gas pipelines and up to 18 LNG terminals vying for approval along the northwest coast, Howe Sound, Delta, and Vancouver Island, join us as we drill down on the myths and realities of this industry, through an evening of multi-media presentations and film."
For Darwish, this upcoming forum in Victoria follows public events in Ladner (October 22), Powell River (November 2), and Courtenay (November 4).
The tour also follows our LNG Pipedreams, Fractured Futures and Community Resistance counter-summit in Vancouver in May and the LNG and Petro-State Politics forum in Squamish in September. We have also supported the Gitxsan land defenders and their Madii Lii Camp (that opposes the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline to the Pacific NorthWest LNG terminal on Lelu Island), as well as theUnis'tot'en action camp (which stands on the pathway of the Pacific Trail pipeline to the proposed Kitimat LNG terminal).
Plans are being made for public forums in Campbell River, Nanaimo and possibly Port Alberni early in the new year.
If you live in the Victoria area, please consider attending this public forum. You can find out more about it on our website here.

Attack on the General Secretary of the UGTT Tunisia: the ITUC expresses its condemnation and solidarity
Brussels, 17 November 2014 (ITUC OnLine): Following the physical attack on Houcine Abassi, the General Secretary of the Tunisian trade union confederation, the Union générale tunisienne du travail (UGTT), the ITUC condemns this unacceptable violence and once again expresses its full solidarity with the UGTT, the lynchpin of Tunisia’s successful transition to democracy.
Houcine Abbassi, who is also president of the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC), was the target of a violent attack on Thursday evening as he was leaving his office by car, in Mohamed Ali square in the centre of Tunis. The car windows were broken as stones were thrown at them by external infiltrators. It was only thanks to the vigilance of the UGTT’s security guards that the general secretary managed to escape unharmed.
The UGTT described the attack, which occurred at the end of an emergency meeting at the head office of the Tunis transport workers’ union, as « a despicable and contemptible act”. It has handed over evidence of the attack and witness statements to the authorities.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION
ITUC Condemns Terrorist Attack on Synagogue, Calls for Calm
Brussels, 19 November 2014 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has condemned Tuesday’s bloody attack on a Jerusalem synagogue which left four worshippers and one police officer dead, and several others injured. The two perpetrators were members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine which, along with Hamas, praised the attack.
“This appalling attack in a place of worship was intended to provoke a deepening of the spiral of violence, at a time when tensions in Jerusalem in particular are especially high with several other Israelis and Palestinians losing their lives in recent weeks. We call on all parties to act with restraint, and in accordance with the rule of law,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow. “Extremist groups will continue to exploit the growing desperation of Palestinians and the fears of ordinary Israelis, putting peace and security in the region at yet higher risk. The only acceptable way forward is for a negotiated settlement of the conflict, resulting in a two-state solution in accordance with the legitimacy of international law.”

Dear PAOV,
It’s been another busy year at the Wilderness Committee – a year that leaves me celebrating many wins for nature. These wins are because of the support of people like you. Thank you!
You might be wondering why I’m celebrating. Haven’t we had a lot of bad news this year? I certainly won’t deny that.
Right now in southwest British Columbia, Texas-based company Kinder Morgan wants to build a pipeline that will pump Alberta tar sands bitumen to its tanker terminal in Burnaby, bringing hundreds of oil tankers into Burrard Inlet each year.
I don't need to tell you about the increased risk to our marine environment and climate if Kinder Morgan gets its way.
The Wilderness Committee has been working flat out to see an end to Kinder Morgan’s pipe dream, by holding town hall meetings and rallies to build grassroots and cross-border support to protect our waters and the global climate against increased tar sands exports. We've also attended court hearings, provided mapping services and held a solidarity march in support of protesters standing up to Kinder Morgan right now in a local park on Burnaby Mountain.
So why, when our wilderness areas are under attack, are we still celebrating nature? Because we’ve always been able to count on friends like you to help make victories happen.

One thing we realized in our five years? We cannot continue our great work in supporting these critical cases if we do not invest in our own sustainability. We appreciate that you may have previously donated to one of our campaigns, and we are grateful for your support! This year, we ask that you direct your year-end gift to support core programming at RAVEN. Our goal for this appeal is $70,000.
Why RAVEN? Because we see that what is at stake for First Nations is at stake for everyone and supporting their role as environmental stewards through litigation is a tangible way to saving the environment.
