Collective punishment of 1.8 million human shields in a prison — Newsweek dares publish the truth of Gaza

I’m going to give the ending first of Sarah Helm’s riveting literary account of touring the overwhelming destruction of Gaza for Newsweek. Yes, Newsweek; but evidently the “European edition version,” whatever that means. Helm:

The evening I left, I passed back by Beit Hanoun. Three young teenagers were digging in the dark… They were clearing the rubble from their family orchard.

The teenagers showed me where they had planted a new...

He could win again

Dear PAOV,
Most Canadians want to see a change in government, but our broken electoral system could give the Conservatives another majority - even with fewer votes than last time.

Help stop another Harper majority by chipping in to our people-powered election campaign to defeat the Harper Conservatives and move Canada forward.

Have you seen the latest polls? Most Canadians have rated the Conservatives’ performance as ‘poor’ or ‘very poor,’ and most say that the country is ‘going in the wrong direction.’ [1]

However, new polls show that the Harper Conservatives would win if an election were held today[2]. In fact, because of our broken electoral system, they could still win a majority in the next election - even if...

got 2 minutes to watch and share?

Dear PAOV,

Happy holidays from all us of at Jewish Voice for Peace.

I hope you can take a moment to watch this very short video that we made with our wonderful members from the Bay Area. It will give you a sense of the tireless work led by our chapters all over the country, and offers a message about Chanukah that I hope will inspire and lift you up for the big work we all have ahead.

If it speaks to you in any way, please share it via email or on your social networks!

You're doing it

Dear PAOV,

Each week I sit down at my desk and do an analytics report on the thousands of actions taken by people in the Leadnow community.

Today, you made me do a double take: did you know that in the last week, 963 people in the Leadnow community have raised $34,667 for our campaign to defeat the Harper Conservatives and move Canada forward?

Those are precious resources we can count on putting in the field on January 1st to make sure that we can hold the Conservatives to account at the ballot box in 2015.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 by December 31st so we can be ready for an early election. Can you chip in $5, $10, or $50 to make sure we run the biggest people-powered election campaign that Canada has ever seen? Click here to donate: Read more: You're doing it

The Cuban 5 Are Finally FREE

Dear friends,After 16 years in U.S. jails the last three of the remaining Cuban 5 have been finally freed. This is no doubt a great victory for the 5, for Cuba, for justice and for all of us who have been working for their release.
Thousands of committees and thousands of politicians, artists, students, professors, religious organizations, writers and so many people around the globe have been constantly working for this day to come. This has shown that a united and determined people's struggle for justice can win and has won.
Our small Victoria Friends of Cuba committee has also been involved in that struggle for their release since the beginning. We were able to bring to our community one of the wife's and one of the daughters of the Cuban five and we had also brought Aleida Guevara (Che's daughter) and numerous other speakers to make our supporters and community aware of the details of the...

Paul Dewar goes to Israel

Last night as we were handing out leaflets at Mulcair's event a person of Jewish background going into the pub stopped to thank us for what we were doing. She stated that the day before on Sunday, Dec. 14, Murray Rankin who went on a personal visit to Israel in June of this year did a presentation in the local Jewish Synagogue.
This gives us a good opportunity to either send him a letter or ask to have a meeting with him to ask how his trip went, why he went there and if he met with any government officials. At the same time ask him why he didn't attempt to go and visit the West Bank or Gaza and meet with Palestinians who are left with death, suffering and destruction in the hands of Israel's Apartheid and Occupation. If he met with any Israeli government officials did he raise the issue of:...

Victoria Mutiny Commemoration Honour the Resisters of the 259th BattalionSunday, December 21
9:00 AM - Ceremony at corner of Fort and Quadra Street (location of 1918 Mutiny)
7:30 AM - Memorial Walk, departing from Carnarvon Park (2801 Henderson Rd, at Carnarvon Street, in Oak Bay), following the route of the 259 Battalion On the morning of Dec. 21st, 1918, French-Canadian conscripts in the 259th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force mutinied at the corner of Fort and Quadra streets in downtown Victoria. They refused to embark for service in a new war, as the Conservative government of Canada committed troops to aid the White Russian forces fighting the Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War. The war on the Western Front had ended six weeks earlier. So sending conscripts to fight in the Russian Far East had dubious legal grounds.

[UVic-sustainability] News and Events for the Week of Dec 15th

Things are increasingly quiet as the holiday approach. This week, we only have one piece of news and one event.

NEWS:

BC Transit released a few changes to their service, which will come into effect December 29th and hopefully improve service to UVic. It looks like there will be several more 14s running between downtown and UVic after the 29th with changes to the 11 and the 33 routes. UVic related routes 11, 12, 14, 15 and 39 have some additional trips added to address capacity and reliability issues.
