WHAT IS A GENERATIVE FOODSHED?
A foodshed is the geographic location that produces the food for a particular population. The term describes a region where food flows from the area that it is produced to the place where it is consumed, including the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on.
From Rodale Institute: By farming organically, we are regenerating the soil, returning the land to its natural state. We are also regenerating the health of ourselves and our family by reducing or eliminating chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.Beyond our farm, by not using chemicals, we are regenerating the wildlands and local environment. Wildlife and beneficial birds return to help keep down insects and other pests. Our local watershed has less pollution in the streams and creeks which come off...

Dear Friends,
Thank you for your support and interest in THE END OF POVERTY?
Our original intention when filming THE END OF POVERTY? (TEOP) was to include both the root causes of poverty and the solutions. When we interviewed our experts (Susan Geroge, Eric Toussaint, Serge LaTouche, Joseph Stiglitz, John Christensen, John Perkins and others) back in '07 and '08, we asked what the solutions were. Based on their input, we were able to aggregate them into 10 groups of solutions that could end poverty in our lifetimes.
These are real solutions that would change the economic system that created poverty.
Some solutions might seem obvious: the guarantee of shelter, healthcare, education, food, and drinking water. While others would require the upending of our hyper-capitalistic society, for example, a basic minimum wage—regardless of employment—as a fundamental human right, which would not cost that much to implement.
As we shared previously, we've launched a crowdfund campaign to make a follow up film TO END POVERTY! But we need your help.

Sisters, Brother, and Friends,
This past Wednesday night (Dec. 2) in Vancouver a meeting was held to hear a panel of five people speaking on the recently published Naomi Klein book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate. Three of those people -- Stephen Collis, Brad Hornick, and Lynne Quarmby -- had been arrested on Burnaby Mountain, so their talks and the conversation that ensued had a lot to do with the concrete experience of "capitalism vs. the climate."
You can find videos of the evening's introduction, the five speeches, and the discussion at the following link, thanks to the careful camera-work and rapid processing of Devin Gillan, who has become the recorder of all progressive actions in the lower mainland:

Dear PAOV,
As Chanukah fast approaches, we want to take this moment to thank you. For speaking the truth. For taking to the streets. For believing a better, more just world is possible.

Just as Chanukah candles are ignited one by one from a single flame, our courage to stand up to injustice catches--from one person to another, from one community to the next, and eventually to the whole world. Together, we will illuminate justice. Burn bright.
On behalf of all of us at Jewish Voice for Peace, may you and your loved ones have a more peaceful and just holiday season.

AN URGENT CALL FOR ENGAGEMENT
Heads up! This is an urgent call for submissions to the Province’s 10-Year Transportation Plan, for which the deadline is in two days, on Friday, December 12th at 4pm.
The Ministry is actively seeking our engagement. The website is engage.gov.bc.ca/transportationplan but before you go there, consider these facts:
- This is a plan for the next ten years of transportation in BC by land, sea and air.
- BC has a legislated goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 33% by 2020, halfway through the new 10-Year Plan.
- Transportation is the single biggest source of emissions in BC.
- Reducing those emissions is not in the Plan’s priorities.
Maintaining roads and bridges is clearly important: even electric cars and trucks need safe highways and side roads. The sense you get from the plan, however, is that this is all that matters.
The Plan has four priorities:
- Moving goods and people safely and reliably
- Growing the economy
- Connecting and strengthening communities
- Maximizing collaboration and investment with various partners.
NOTHING ON THE CLIMATE CRISIS
There is no mention of a fifth urgent priority: to tackle the global climate crisis. No mention of the need to electrify cars, light trucks, buses and railways, and to establish a province-wide network of EV charging stations. No mention of the reduced cancer, heart and lung disease that will come with the end of air pollution.

We need to raise $100,000 by December 31st to give thousands of people the support, training and technology they need to mobilize hundreds of thousands to vote together in the next election, defeat the Harper Conservatives, and move Canada forward.
Can you chip in $5, $20 or $50 today?
Dear PAOV,
As 2014 draws to a close and we reflect on the year that was, we’re deeply focused on what’s coming in 2015 - a federal election that could be a turning point for our country.
In just the past month, nearly 15,000 of you have signed the pledge to Vote Together to stop vote splitting, defeat the Harper Conservatives, and move Canada forward. You’ve got Harper’s attention, and you’ve sent a powerful message to the NDP, Liberals and Greens that we want the next government to move Canada forward with real progress for our democracy, economy and environment.
It gets better. Local leaders have already run 30 information, organizing and training meetings in the swing ridings, and over 2,100 people have signed up to volunteer across the country.
Momentum is building fast, but with the Conservatives building strength in the polls and growing speculation that an early election could be just a few months away, we need your help to raise $100,000 by December 31st so we can take this campaign to the next level in January.[1]
Can you pitch in $5, $10, or $20 to help fund our people-powered election campaign? Click here to make a secure donation.
Your donations will:
- Build volunteer-run Community Action Teams in battleground ridings from coast to coast to coast. We know swing ridings can be won with strong teams of people knocking on doors, recruiting people to vote together, and then getting out the vote on election day. Teams are already forming in 15 key ridings and we need your donations to providing crucial training, communication materials and strategic support.
- Create an online hub to map out the best ways for thousands of us to have an impact in the election. If we raise enough money to fully fund this project, then in the lead-up to the election we’ll be able to send everyone who has signed the Vote Together pledge up to date information about the state of play in their riding, and the best way they can have an impact - whether that’s in your riding, or calling into a swing riding to get out the vote.

News:
This weekend, UVic professor and Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver was quoted in a Toronto Star article reporting that 2014 is currently tied as the hottest year on record. With the climate negotiations in Lima, Peru, Weaver called for global emission pricing saying that “until we put a price on emissions, we won’t deal with [them].” PICS Executive Director Tom Pedersen was also quoted saying “[Canada] used to have a reputation, internationally respected, as an environmental leader. Pedersen added, “what I would like to come out of Lima is for Canada to say: we, too, are serious about doing something about climate change.”
In the face of groups like the
UVic Environmental Law Centre calling for great transparency in relation to Mount Polley, and
dam safety, the BC government has taken steps to post the dam reports online. The
